From the Principal’s Desk
The term finished with a real bang – there was so much going on it was hard to know where to start. During the last fortnight we had two athletics carnivals, an assembly, a DFES senior cadet camp in Mundaring, Cannington’s Got Talent and Music Rocks at Badlands bar in East Perth. Nobody can say we are dull at Cannington Community ESC.
I would like to acknowledge Mr Sands and Ms Janes for the athletic carnivals organisation and Miss Jones and the team for the assembly. Special thanks to Mr Hussein and Mr Arrantash for getting the DFES camp done - the weather changed a lot during last week but the students were kept warm with a giant bonfire – courtesy of Mr Arrantash and his family.
The Music Rocks performance at Badlands bar saw our school doing 4 “gigs”. We even had Hugo’s little sister join him onstage for one of his performances. I would like to thank Mrs Jean Reid who gave up her Saturday morning to attend with me. I was so proud of the students and it is brilliant to see the families sharing the moment together.
Documented plans have been posted out and parents/caregivers are asked to contact their student’s class teacher if they have any questions.
We farewell some of our Pathways students and year 12 students who will be leaving us at the end of week one term four. The majority of our senior students are staying to the end of the year which we are happy to accommodate. The graduation dinner will be at Brando’s in Victoria Park on 22nd October with the presentation ceremony with Sevenoaks Senior College to be held at the Astral ballroom at the Crown on 9th November. To those students leaving us, best of luck, set goals, work hard, be positive.
I hope everyone has a super holiday and gets out in the sunshine!

What a term it has been. We have been so busy that it has just flown by. We can hardly believe that we will be on holidays in under a week.
We have been to some interesting places for community access, practising our travel training and road safety skills. Writing a letter to our future selves and receiving them in the mail was very exciting. We also did a “Get On Board Tour” with Dave from Transperth. This was exceptionally interesting and we also learnt how to cope and manage if things don’t necessarily go to plan. On the day, the trains stopped running and we had to work out an alternative route to get to Maddington Station.

We are continuing our work on the C.S. Lewis novel - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe from the series The Chronicles of Narnia. It has been fascinating learning about another realm and the characters who live there.
We are very pleased that we have completed our Ignite portfolios. Mr Arrantash has collected these and we are eagerly awaiting to see whether we pass. We are all quietly confident.
It has been an extremely hectic week with not one, but two sports carnivals. The first was the ESSN Sports Carnival on Tuesday which was at Atwell College. We had so much fun and were thoroughly exhausted by the time we left. Some of us even fell asleep on the bus back to school. On Thursday we competed in the CCC Athletics Carnival. Even though many of us were still tired from Tuesday, we did very well and displayed great sportsmanship.

It has been a very busy and exciting term for students and staff. We said goodbye to Ms Woon and hello to Mr Towie as our new support teacher.
We have been to several different places out and about in the community for our travel training this term including a wonderful train ride to Perth Station and back. It was very exciting to see the new Optus Stadium and the amazing Matagarup Bridge from the train.

The ESSN sports carnival was big highlight. All of the students participated and had an awesome day. Bring on term 4.

It is hard to believe how fast term 3 has gone. It has been busy with lots of activities, excursions and other programs alongside our regular lessons. As part of our Community Access and ASDAN we visited Carousel Shopping Centre and Cannington Leisureplex. While visiting Carousel, we were able to practise our public transport training as well as undertake a practical shopping activity that we had been practising during Mathematics lessons. The focus of the activity was to buy a reward of our choice making sure that it did not exceed our given budget.
On Tuesdays, during literacy lessons, we have been reading the Magic Belt and Moon Belt series in groups. We are thoroughly it and it is helping us develop our reading and writing skills, specifically focussing on punctuation and spelling. We have also started creating our individual spelling list on literacy planet and are mastering it through fun filled activities.
On Fridays, from the start of this term, we have been lucky enough to attend Firetech lessons at the senior campus. These lessons have given us an opportunity to develop our technology skills. Last week we had fun creating our own road network with lots of crossroads and turns, making sure it was complete and connected. We then got the robot to do a test run to check the functioning of our road. It was fun watching it navigate through our road network.
We are extremely proud of all our students for participating in the ESSN Sports Carnival at Atwell College and would like to congratulate Jaxon and Nathan for their excellent performance in the ‘Cannington’s got Talent’ event at school.
Last week of the term is also a busy week with our assembly performance on Monday and the excursion to Kings Park on Wednesday.

This term has been busy with the finalisation of the IGNITE award and preparations to take students’ work to moderation for ASDAN.
We have had an excursion to the DFES Museum at the Old Perth Fire Station. This was the culmination of a unit of work based on natural disasters. We learned about the helpers in our community that are equipped to support us in the event of a disaster. After we had finished at the Museum, we headed in to the Carillon for lunch. This allowed us to put into practise the skills of choosing healthy foods when eating out, as well as staying within a budget.
Our garden has continued to produce some excellent vegetables including cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, potatoes and beetroot.
During fitness, we have been monitoring our heart rates to see how exercise affects it. We take our blood pressure and heart rate using an electronic wrist monitor before, immediately after and 10 minutes following exercise and keep a record in our fitness journals. We also rate how we felt doing fitness that day using a scale of 1-5. It has been interesting to see how long it takes for our heart rates to get back to the resting rate.
We recently welcomed Mrs Egan into our class as an education assistant and we are enjoying getting to know her.
Finally, we have been working on producing an excellent assembly this term and presented it on Monday of this week. We have really enjoyed learning all the songs, dance moves and Key Word Signs for our special production.

What an Amazing Day!!
On Tuesday 17 August, the Middle School took part in the ESSN Athletics Carnival at Atwell College. There were 9 schools competing in the Carnival. The event was well organised and set up by Atwell College and it was fantastic for CCESC to be a part of this day.
Our students participated in many events including pass ball, tunnel ball, tee ball, flag races, tug of war and relays to name a few.
Medals were awarded to Jasmine Sunderland, Turoa Rangiaho-Ransfield and Dylan Johnson for their keen participation and outstanding sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the day.
I would also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all the staff who helped out along with the many parents who came to support and cheer on our teams. Well done students on such a wonderful day. Your behaviour and participation is to be commended!

Students have been working hard across all subject areas in an effort to finalise some ongoing projects that we have been working on for our ASDAN Key Steps Certificate.
This term the students researched an environmental organisation and presented a TED talk with slides they created using PowerPoint. This was a nerve-wrecking challenge for most (public speaking is the most common phobia in the world). However, the students showed a lot of courage in giving it a go and presenting a series of AMAZING presentations to their peers and classroom staff! All TED talks were filmed on iPads so that students could watch their own presentation the following week and self-evaluate their speaking skills. Students received written feedback from their peers which also helped with our reflections. Overall, most students said they would be happy to give another presentation as it made them feel confident and proud. Well done on an amazing achievement!

For Aboriginal Studies we looked at a news story (seen on SBS) about a group of Indigenous youth from Central Australia involved in workshopping and developing new Indigenous-themed EMOJIS 👍🙂🙌😍💕✌. These emojis will be available first on Android devices (you will be able to download an Android keyboard) but they will be released later in the year for Apple devices (which we are hoping to download on our school iPads). There are 19 "real" Indigemojis and we thought it would be a great idea to make our own Indigenous-themed emojis! In our discussions, students felt that Indigemojis would be great for young people to help promote respect and understanding of Aboriginal identities and cultures. Students were given the option of creating an emoji using any creative mode they liked and the end result was fantastic! Check them out! Aren’t they cool?

10S has been busy continuing to support the less fortunate by making biscuits for HD Streetwise. During DFES Cadets lessons we have started to look at using compasses for navigation activities. Friday afternoons continue to be our time to improve our music skills during Music Rocks lessons. In week 9 we had our athletics carnival which we enjoyed. Tuesdays are still workplace learning days and on Wednesdays we get to make some fancy food during Food Science. As always, the newsletter covers just a small part of what we do in 10S.

As part of the ASDAN module - Towards Independence, Money Progression, Group 1 students have planned and attended a leisure activity. The students brainstormed leisure activities, researched the entry costs and transport arrangements. Perth Zoo was selected as the most popular. The students planned the transport route, selected to participate in a special zoo session with zoo staff and made sure they had their permission notes and the equipment needed for the day.
On Monday 9 September students and staff caught two trains and a ferry to Perth Zoo. Claire from Perth Zoo, gave us some mystery objects to try to work out what they were. Later we found out that they were an elephant’s tooth, an elephant’s tail, a porcupine’s quill (spike) and a snake’ skin. Claire also allowed us to touch a blue tongued lizard, a western swamp tortoise named Speedy, and a black headed python with smooth scales on his tummy and rough scales on his back. We then explored the Perth Zoo looking at the penguins, birds, kangaroos, porcupines, elephants, meerkats, lions, rhinoceros, giraffes, gibbons, zebras, orangutans, turtles, big fish, tortoises, monkeys, African hunting dogs, hyenas, frogs, frill necked lizards and many Australian marsupials in the Nocturnal House. The best parts of the day according to the students were:
Chey: Looking at the giraffes |
Luke: Looking at the birds |
Jason: Everything |
Kevin: Seeing the penguins and emus |
Joseph: Looking at the monkey school |
Zac: Seeing the giraffes and kangaroos |

Our year 11 students have been completing their second round of OLNA testing. It has been really pleasing to witness Zahrion, Ryan, Jack, Bradley and Allister’s great maturity and taking ownership in completing their Reading, Writing and Numeracy assessment component.
During English our students were instructed to select and outline a problem in the community and look for possible solutions to solve the issues. The outcome was very positive. Our students were able to generate countless thoughtful discussions, used real life examples and demonstrated realistic solutions to minimise and solve the problem.

Problems in our community
Our senior students are gearing up for the annual DFES camp. This year we are heading to Perth Hills Discovery Centre. The students are very much excited to showcase all they have learnt during our DFES sessions and ready to apply it to practice.

Practicing for DFES camp
Group 3
We have had a busy term including all students having completed their MAPS. Each session is so vital as it gives all stakeholders an opportunity to re-focus on important milestones in each young person’s life.
Wade has already achieved a goal from his MAP. He decided, together with his family, that he was ready to start travel training. He followed instructions and accepted feedback from Mrs Pieri and Mrs Bullock who took turns travelling with him each day. This resulted in Wade gaining confidence and successfully completing the travel training requirements to become an independent traveller.
The year 12 students are getting ready for the DFES camp during HPO and DFES lessons. The students, under the direction of Mr Arrantash, practiced cooking on camp stoves and setting up tents. It was interesting to see how the students handled these tasks. I hope the weather is kind and the students have a great camping experience.

Practising for camp
Later this term the year 11 students had two opportunities to sit their “Keys for Life” theory test. They have all been practicing the tests online and working hard during lessons. It was great to see Courtney, Katie and Mitchell pass their test. Ethan also passed his test at the licensing centre and was rewarded for all his practicing. I know the students who haven’t passed yet won’t get too frustrated and will continue practicing and eventually pass their test.

Zac has nearly graduated from his Passport 2 Employment course with EDGE in Subiaco. He will complete his course in week 9. He has enjoyed travelling with his peers and learning how to improve his employability skills.

Last week we had our celebration – a three-course Indonesian feast planned, shopped for and cooked by the students taking Food Science as an elective. It was great to see everyone using their culinary skills and team work to get the three courses prepped and cooked in a limited amount of time. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any photos of the finished products but please enjoy our photos of the students preparing chicken (and tofu) satay, Nasi Goreng and banana fritters.

Design and Technology
Year 7
This term the year 7 students have completed a wooden ski boat model. This project has involved students using the wood lathe to turn the boat's captain into shape. The windscreen for this model is made from acrylic, which is cut out on a scroll saw, drilled and the bent using an acrylic hot wire bender. Students have begun making a model we call 'Fred's Wagon' which requires them to complete two mortise and tenon joints which will add to their skills and confidence.

Year 8
Year 8 woodwork students are working on a wooden paper towel dispenser. To make the components for this model, they need to use the wood lathe, a jigsaw and a table-mounted router. Students will use wood stain to finish their projects.
Jaxon proudly displays his towel holder
Year 9
The last big project for term 3 will be a farm tractor. This project involves bending acrylic to form the mud guards and the cabin. Students add lots of extra detail such as headlights and engine grills which provides a professional looking finish.

Tradestart
Students participating in the Tradestart course have been learning about safe material handling and the use of a range of levelling devices. They have received a timber order and placed the timber into storage following cutting to length and sorting by size. The students are working on several practical projects in the school garden area. A new reconstituted limestone block garden bed has been completed and a soak well is being installed to collect storm water that was causing some erosion problems near the garden area. These hands on projects allow students to gain great experience and new skills.

Keys for Life
Congratulations to those students who have passed their learner’s permit written test. Ten of our year 11 students have worked very hard and passed. Some students have completed the Learner's Permit application process and have begun driving! Students have been learning about regular car maintenance checks, how to safely change a flat tyre and how to check tyre pressures. The last week of this program will look at some tips when purchasing a secondhand car.

Workplace Learning
Senior School
We have had yet another busy term. Congratulations to all the students who were able to successfully begin in a new workplace. Almost all students have now participated in their MAP Meetings. Information from these meetings will be used when we are organising new work placements to make sure the placement suits the students’ interests.
This term Callum McSorley-Hayes, Elvis Lewis, Brandon Corby and Zac Leheste commenced the Passport 2 Employment course. They all completed travel training prior to the start of the course and are now successfully travelling independently to and from Subiaco.
We are looking forward to working with the year 10 students who will be starting the transition to the senior campus next term.
We are a little sad to be so close to the end of the school year for the Pathway students. We would like to thank you for your commitment to the workplace learning program and wish you luck in your new life after school.

This term I had the privilege to lead an academy program for the middle school. The program challenged the students mentally and physically and consisted on Boot Camp workouts practicing movements like sit-ups, squats, push-ups and boxing. We really enjoyed the time we practiced and we also had time to reflect on how we deal with issues we might struggle with at school and in life and how to find ways to solve these situations.
The experience reminded me what Carol Welch said, “Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states.” Also John F Kennedy said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.”
Quotes of the day: “It is better to make many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward” - Proverb
“Don’t find time to exercise MAKE time to exercise”

Key Word Sign – using our hands to talk!
So far this year, the middle-school students have had exposure to upwards of 70 Key Word Signs (KWS). This has prepared them well for Cannington Community ESC’s inaugural Key Word Sign Olympics.
This term, the students and staff have become enthusiastic about competing in a series of KAHOOT! quizzes, to determine who will represent their class to become the first, champion KWS class and individual KWS Olympic medallists.
It should be a fun event with plenty of prizes and giveaways. The winners will be announced in the next newsletter. Watch this space!

Office Information
Payments
Thank you to everyone who has paid their contributions. Just a reminder you can pay your contributions by EFTPOS, direct debit or by a payment plan. Please contact the office to arrange a payment plan. All charges for years 11 and 12 students are compulsory. Please arrange payments as soon as possible. If charges are not paid, then the school can no longer subsidise your student’s excursions. Our bank details are BSB 016 270 A/C 340822406 (when using online banking please remember to state your student’s name in the details box otherwise we cannot identify the relevant student).
Middle School Parking
We have new parking bays for 2019. 2 visitor bays are now located at the school entrance. Please note that parking is not permitted in the drive way as indicated by the ‘no stopping’ markers and yellow line, as this causes a traffic jam on Wharf Street and is dangerous for students. Your cooperation would be appreciated. Parents are welcome to park down the side of the school near the bus bays.
Visiting the School
All visitors must sign in at Reception/Business Centre and receive a yellow visitor label.

The vibrant yellow daffodil represents hope and a continuing fight against cancer. Cannington Community Education Support Centre and Cannington Community College turned yellow on Friday 23rd August, with gold coin donations to the Cancer Council. Students were encouraged to wear yellow to show support for those affected by cancer. This fundraising effort had a great result, raising the sum of $397.50. Students looked great in splashes of yellow on the day! A very big thank you to everyone for supporting Daffodil day 2019!
