First day of term 1 for students

Monday 4 February 2019

From the Principal’s Desk

What an amazing year we have had at Cannington Community Education Support Centre. Watching some of our year 7 students get their Ignite awards at the City of Canning made me realise how time flies. It seems like yesterday when they made their way into a new school and met new friends and staff. We will be welcoming over 20 new year 7 students next year who will be just as excited and anxious. Mrs Cave and Mrs Reid have done a lot of work building up our transition program and hopefully everybody is ready for 2019.

Our year 10 students move from the middle school campus to our senior school campus for year 11 to continue their education in 2019. They have had lots of orientation and we are confident the impact of change will be minimal. They will catch up with a lot of staff they had as students in year 8. At Cannington we also ensure we move some staff up with the students to provide stability and support. Basically over the course of five years our staff move across the 2 campuses. This allows all our staff to have a rich understanding of what we are trying to achieve through our curriculum. Congratulations to Hugo Hendrawan, our Endeavour Award winner at the year 10 leavers assembly with Cannington Community College.

Our middle school camp was a huge success at Woodman Point. The campers enjoyed dinner in Fremantle, a disco dressed as video game characters, swimming and adventure activities even a game of laser tag. Miss Thring and Mr Sands did a great job organising the camp. Huge thanks to the staff who attended camp, the early mornings and late nights do catch up with everyone and I am sure Friday night was an early one for students and staff alike. Camps are extraordinarily expensive for the school but provide memories that last a life time.

We have yet to finalise staffing for 2019 and so cannot publish a full list - a draft copy of classes has been attached however there may be changes. We welcome back Mrs Brown and also welcome Mr Smith and Mrs Thomas to our teaching team. We farewell Miss Thring and Mrs Carolin and thank them so much for all they have done during their time with us. We wish them well. We anticipate over ten new education assistants, but at the time of writing we cannot confirm their details.

The School Council was very busy throughout the school year and have authorised the contributions and charges for 2019. They also endorsed a motion that, as fees for years 11,12 and 13 are mandatory, there need to be consequences for non-payments. A letter has been sent to all our senior school parent/caregivers outlining this process. Please contact our Manager of Corporate Services, Mrs Buchan, if you ever have any questions about school fees and payment options. I would like to formally acknowledge the work of our Council this year – most of them have committed to remaining as members of our School Board in 2019 as we transition through our Independent Public School status.

A number of our staff attended the WAESPAA Awards night at the Perth Convention Centre. Mrs Bates was on the organising committee this year. We had nominees in a number of different categories for the awards. Miss Woo, Ms Janes, Miss Jones and Mrs G Reid were all nominated by their peers as being outstanding practitioners at our school. Our Council Chair, Mrs Bonnefin, was there on the night, having been nominated by the school where she works. It was a lovely evening with the Minister of Education opening the night. It was a true celebration of all the wonderful people who work in the Education Support Sector. Mrs Janes actually took out the Senior Secondary Teacher of the year award. Well done to all the nominees and also well done to those staff who nominated a peer - recognition by colleagues is the highest accolade in my book.

I have included in the newsletter an infographic on our priorities for the next business planning cycle. It represents our school hashtag # CanDo. We are a “can do” school and our students and staff have a “can do” mindset. The infographic uses the hashtag as a mnemonic for our priority areas. We will be seeking input into our 2019-2022 Business Plan to make sure it covers all our community. There will be operational plans for each area underpinning each area but we want to keep our message simple - hope you like it. Don’t forget to stay in touch via our Schoolzine app, our Facebook and Instagram pages as well as our website - subscribe to get notifications.

On behalf of the Cannington Community ESC I would like to thank all the staff and families for working together to make our school great, and I would like to extend our best wishes for a joyous festive season and a safe, relaxing and refreshing student vacation period.

Class Updates

7C

The year 7C class has had a wonderful year this year. The students have all worked hard to achieve their IEP goals, but more importantly, they have made some good friends to go into year 8 with.

This term the class has continued to maintain the worm farm for enterprise and are now busy processing vegetable scraps to keep the worms fed over the summer holidays. We would like to thank Woolworths at Carousel for generously donating their food scraps to the class for our worm farms.

A major event this term was the school camp that was enjoyed by all who went. The 7C students really enjoyed their day down at Coogee Beach, jumping off the pontoon and a highlight was using the flying fox back at camp. Some of the class had an adventure exploring Fremantle Prison whilst others explored a submarine at Fremantle Maritime Museum.

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to starting refreshed in early 2019.

7S

2018 has been a fabulous year for the staff and students of 7S with lots of learning, excursions and activities. Students have all grown and matured over the course of this year. Here is a reflection of what they enjoyed in their first year of high school at CCESC.

Nathan - I loved the fun day trip to Adventure World and I especially enjoyed going on the Abyss. I also liked the camp. It was fun. I particularly enjoyed the beach walk and the food.

Ryan - I like my class especially my teachers Mrs Solomon, Mrs Reid and Mrs Sands. They are kind and helpful.

Nadeer - I enjoyed being in my class this year. I made new friends. I liked going for swimming lessons with my class to the Cannington Leisureplex.

Casey - This year, I had fun going to Adventure World. I am looking forward to going again next year. I liked the swimming lessons.

Jaxon - I enjoy Breakfast Club at school. This year my favourite thing was camp. It was awesome. Adventure World was great and I am looking forward to it next year. I had fun at soccer carnival.

Hayden has been sick for most part of this term and we are all missing him. Hope he gets well soon and joins us next year.

Wishing all the students and their families a lovely and relaxed holiday break!

Susan Solomon

7W

This term has been busy with the finishing up of our Ignite award and ASDAN program. We attended market day early in the term and loved checking out what other schools are doing.

We are getting excited about presenting the final assembly for the year and have been practising hard for it. We are also looking forward to next year when we won’t be the youngest in the school anymore!

Our chicken enterprise has gone well and we are a bit sad to be saying goodbye to them at the end of this term as we hand them on to the incoming year 7 students.

My favourite thing about year 7 has been:

Isaac: Earning tokens to achieve rewards.
Hayley: Music class and reading books.
Jaydene: Having the chickens and being able to look after them.
Hudson: Being in the same class as Isaac.
Turoa: Being able to do art and woodwork.
Oliver: Having people realise that I am funny.
Cole: Having Bentley in our class.

The most exciting thing that’s happened to Kevin and I this year was going to Woodman Point with the Sevenoaks kids. What I liked about Woodman Point was practicing with the fishing rods even though I didn’t catch any fish at all and Kevin’s favourite part was the beach. Kevin was most excited at Woodman Point about the fishing and swimming and I was most excited about going on the body boards. We loved the fruits and biscuits for morning tea and sausage sizzles for lunch, beautifully cooked by Mr den Otter and Mr Griffin.

We had great outdoor games: Football, Cricket, Soccer. We even threw a vortex. Hugo Hendrawan and Kevin Samadhi

On Tuesdays I go to Salon Express for workplace learning. I leave from Sevenoaks and travel to the workplace by train. Salon Express is a hairdressing salon and the person in charge is Vanessa. My jobs are cleaning floors, chairs, hair colouring brushes and mirrors. I also wash and dry the dishes, fold aprons and roll up small towels. I enjoy working at this workplace and look forward to going back next year. Katie Usher

The most exciting thing that happened to me on camp was swimming at the beach because the water was nice and fun. My friends and I had a great time together, we had lots of laughs. Lily Dowsett

I enjoyed going to Sizzlers for work-related visits because I got free garlic bread. I enjoyed going to Shelley Beach and Woodman Point Recreation Reserve and Woodman Point Ammo Jetty because I swam, went fishing and had a sausage sizzle. I also enjoyed being involved in the ADCAP Concert because I danced to ‘That Power’ dance. Brandon Champion

Workplace learning is one of the best things I have done this year. Brandon and I went on a bus to Bannister Road to Autonexus. We get off and walk to Ilda Road. The distance to get to Autonexus is 650m. The most exciting thing to do is tuning the radios and greeting Mike the supervisor in the morning. I’m looking forward to working there next year. I love vehicles and I love to work. Mitchell Keene

During our overnight camp at Woodman Point, I went to Coogee Beach and I had a hotdog and ice-cream. I made a BTS rock which had the word BTS on it from a Kpop band I like. I walked on the beach with my friends and it was a good day. Courtney Francis-Duckworth

Workplace Learning

As student attendance in the classroom has decreased for the end of this year, workplace learning attendance has continued to be strong. It is great to see students still enjoying their placements.

We have also seen several of our year 10 students commencing their work experience from the Sevenoaks site in preparation for next year. Thanks to Ms Banks for arranging a smooth transition.

Congratulations to Bradly Adamson for completing Certificate II in Hospitality. He overcame some big hurdles to complete this year. A big thank you goes to Mrs Egan and Mrs O’Brien for their assistance.

On December 3rd it was National Day of People with Disability. GSI held its annual presentation of $1000 scholarships for further training or education. Congratulations to Elvis Lewis, Holly O’Rourke and Nosisa Mhlope in being awarded this scholarship. We are sure they will put it to good use. Jasmin Steiner was also awarded her Certificate II in Retail and received a Sarah Potter Award for her contribution to the community.

Finally, we would like to thank all staff and students for their hard work and efforts in making workplace learning a valuable program. Best wishes to all for the festive season.

ADCAP goes to the Nutcracker

On Tuesday 27 November, the ADCAP class was lucky to see the WA Ballet Company perform The Nutcracker at His Majesty’s Theatre. Over 1000 students attended the matinee session that was specially performed by the WA Ballet Company. It was the first time our students had been to a concert in this beautiful historic theatre.

The students were absolutely enthralled by the performance, music and costumes. Our ADCAP students said their favourite part of the ballet was the dance of the sugar plum fairy. There were lots of amazing costume changes which helped tell the famous story of The Nutcracker.

Year 10 Transition Shelley Beach

On Monday 22 October the year 10 students joined the senior school students at an excursion to Shelley Beach. It was an awesome day and the weather was absolutely fantastic!

This day is a great opportunity for the year 10 students to mix with senior school staff and students in preparation for next year. Students took part in many different activities including kayaking, bike-riding and fishing along with a serious game of cricket. Mr Rossi showed off his skills when he took a one-handed catch but was then shortly upstaged by Eugini.

Year 11 Lunch

Ms Janes, Mr Griffin, Mr Downing, Ms Womersley and myself had the pleasure of accompanying our Year 11 students to lunch at Sizzlers. There was a buzz of excitement in the air as they primped and preened themselves. They all looked fabulous for their lunch.

Chatter was high as we travelled by train, as you could imagine with nine excited students in tow, followed by a short walk to the venue. We all sat down to enjoy a ‘Last Supper’ as a cohort. The food and company were pleasant and the students’ behaviour was exemplary. It was encouraging to see all of the students engaged in social conversations while travelling and enjoying their meals. The level of politeness and decorum not only displayed amongst themselves, but also to other patrons and staff was a credit to them all and the school.

We wish all of our Year 11 students all the very best as they transition to Year 12 in 2019.
