From the Principal’s Desk

The last formal week of school for most of our students. Many of our years 11 and 12 students are long gone. I had a meeting with a staff member last week when an ex-student knocked on my door. He was decked out in his security gear and had his security pass. The student had completed a course and had secured work; however, he was still pursuing other options to supplement his work, such as being a transit guard. He had identified his pathway and his skills and was working on them. It was so good to see him and that he recognised his place and worth. I asked him back next year to speak to our senior students and share his story - he happily agreed.

All of our students need to find their path, and as a school, we work with them and their families to make this happen. From starting year 7 next year to completing year 12, we all are learning for life! It has been very pleasing to see our transition programs in full swing. Our year 10 students have spent a lot of time getting accustomed to our senior campus and staff. I can assure them that a number of familiar faces will be there next year to keep an eye on things. Our new 7 team has a full complement of students for 2023. In fact, all our classes are full already.

We have some changes in staffing for 2023. Thanks to Miss Holmes and Ms Heald for all their work and effort, and good luck at your new schools. We welcome Ms Ralston and Mr Heng for next year. To Mrs Carroll and Miss van Kerkof, we hope you enjoy your leave and return to us in 2024. To Miss Coombe, our Level 3 teacher, best of luck at Geographe ESC, and I am sure you are happy to be back in the country. Miss Bates has been acting principal at another school this month and has been asked to run the school for term 1, 2023, whilst a recruitment process is undertaken. Mrs Athanasiou has been brilliant as an acting deputy here this term but can’t continue working full-time next year. We have been lucky to get Mrs Cathy Houden to act as deputy principal here for term 1. She has acted in this capacity at Leeming SHS ESC and was a staff member here for several years.

I recently had the pleasure of being an overnight and early morning camper with the students at Point Walter. What a beautiful part of the world, and the weather was fantastic and quite cool for this time of the year. Mrs Martlew organised many activities, including visits to Fremantle and outdoor education activities. As you can see from the pictures, the students had a lot of fun. The food at the camp was plentiful, and some of our students certainly have hearty appetites. The school pays additional salary for staff to attend; however, it is still a big commitment, and I would like to thank them for giving up so much of their personal time getting the camp organised and making it run smoothly.

The year 10 leavers assembly last week was well attended by our families. The year 10 students will be hosting our final assembly of the year at the Sevenoaks gym. We ask for parent/carer numbers to be limited to two per family and encourage everyone to use hand sanitisers and maintain social distancing. We will spread out as much as we can. Our fantastic Duke of Edinburgh and Ignite Awards students will also have the chance for photos. Mrs Lockyer and Mr Arrantash have arranged for a video from Awards WA and some lovely shirt pins.

We have recently run a couple of parent workshops - one around the Triple P Parenting Program and the other on NDIS support for school leavers. Our Board is always on the lookout to help our families navigate challenges and maximise student outcomes. When we all work together, we can do great things. Please let me know of any topics of interest.

I hope you are happy with your son's or daughter’s reports. They have worked very hard to achieve their goals, and all students have made considerable progress. Staff are happy to discuss the reports early next year and look forward to getting IEP/ITPs established for the year. I have included a draft copy of our staffing profile for 2023. As usual, we try to minimise changes and support students to get to know new staff and/or new classrooms. We will be doing some building work during the holidays, and we hope everything is finished in time for the term to commence. The Canning City centre project and Metronet will still be in full swing, so we need to be aware of the changes. Our Board Chair, Mrs Blake, has been involved in many discussions.

2022 has been a challenging year; we all need to learn to live with COVID-19. That may be the case, but it is hard to operate a school when staff are away. Some students struggled with the changes. Nevertheless, there was always a teacher in front of every class, we ran our camps and excursions, and the students learning was always at the forefront of everything we did. I know our staff are exhausted and well and truly deserve their holidays to recharge and spend time with their loved ones and families. To those staff battling illness, we wish you a speedy recovery. We will be back to do it all again in 2023 because we CAN DO! To everyone, have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. Stay safe and healthy, enjoy some fresh air and do things you enjoy!

Class Updates

7D

What a fantastic end to term 4! Our students have worked hard this year, and I am grateful to have been their teacher. This is my last newsletter for Cannington, as I have accepted a permanent position for 2023 and beyond. I wish all the students here the very best in their future endeavours. It has been a pleasure to be part of this school community.

For writing, students completed two big tasks: a spooky Halloween narrative and a Christmas story. For their Halloween narrative, they used a planning narrative to create a spooky plot with characters. They published their stories on Book Creator. For their Christmas story, students typed their narratives on the computer, printed them on a Christmas postcard and decorated it.

Since week 7, the Christmas spirit has entered our classroom, and it has been filled with lots of colours! Students demonstrated amazing Christmas spirit and participated in Christmas activities such as Christmas writing, bauble making, craft, Christmas tree decorating, cooking and Secret Santa. We even watched a Christmas movie on our final day. Here are some photos of our classroom. I wish families who celebrate Christmas a big Merry Christmas

8C

We find ourselves at the end of another long year, and what a year it has been. We started the year joined by new friends Masouma and Reed, who were amazing additions to the 8C gang and who we became fast friends with.

This end of this term has been jam-packed with heaps of adventure, friendship and sunscreen. When the camp kids and the day camp kids met at the Fremantle Maritime Museum a couple of weeks ago, you may be forgiven for thinking that 8C was one big family as everyone just gravitated into one big group of students and staff with stories being told and genuine grins galore. It was wonderful to be part of it.

We followed this up with a trip to the Perth Zoo, which was only a small part of the day’s excitement. We were all very excited to catch the train from Queen’s Park Station to Elizabeth Quay, but the gentle sway of the train was a terrific exercise in mindfulness. This was only surpassed by the gentle lapping of water against the side of the ferry as we crossed from Elizabeth Quay to South Perth. We started with the little penguins, and although we did get a little lost looking for them in the wetlands, we luckily found them just as they were being fed. Another favourite was the meerkat ... yes, just the one ... on guard duty while the others all slept snuggled safely out of sight. It was a great day out, and big thanks to Miss Laudehr and Ms Daley for their amazing organising skills for bringing it all together with so little time. Well done.

On behalf of 8C, we wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer holiday, and we can’t wait to see everyone back at CCESC for year 9, 2023.

8P

This term has been a very busy one for 8P. We have undertaken Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT) in reading, spelling and grammar, which is designed to indicate how the students understand the concepts and to analyse each student’s strengths and weaknesses. The data is one source of valuable information that guides my teaching practice to cater to each student’s needs and assists in planning purposes for each student. We conducted these tests in the first and second semesters, and lessons have been adjusted accordingly.

As part of our STEM lessons on the life cycle of animals, our class visited Perth Zoo. It was a great experience as students got to see animals up close and understand the life cycles of the animals and how they adapt to their environment. It was also valuable in terms of their understanding of what species are considered endangered and possibly will be extinct in the wild if action is not taken to protect them. The excursion was a great success, and students thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Another experience for our class was the school camp with lots of activities and fun. Students visited the Maritime Museum and Fremantle Prison and had the opportunity to experience some of the area’s history and even partake in some hands-on activities. At the campsite, students could undertake archery and extreme sports, swim in the pool and go on the flying fox. At the end of the camp, students and staff alike were very tired, but all enjoyed the experience. Our day campers came for the museum visit, and we all had lunch at Cicerellos in Fremantle.

Having fun at camp

A big thank you to all parents this year for your support of 8P. It makes it easier for staff to know that we have your support. I am looking forward to what 2023 will bring.

ASDAN: Students have been working on a few challenges for ASDAN, such as completing their resumes and discussing food items to create a healthy diet. Students have also learnt about heat exhaustion, its causes, and the steps to be taken when they or someone else suffer from it. Students have learnt that heat exhaustion could lead to heat stroke, which can be life-threatening.

Devyn is creating a poster on first aid for heat exhaustion

Camp: Students had a lot of fun at camp, which was held at Point Walter Recreation and Conference Centre. They spent the first day enjoying the tourist wheel ride at Fremantle. They spent the second day of camp at Fremantle exploring Fremantle Prison and the Maritime Museum. Students stopped by Cicerello’s to enjoy a delicious lunch with their schoolmates. On return to camp, students participated in various activities such as a disco theme pyjama party, flying fox, archery, ultimate sports, swimming in the pool and playing soccer and cricket.

I have enjoyed making an Apache Helicopter in Woodwork this semester. IBO has been fun because I enjoy playing basketball, and I also do this for my reward time. I like working out in the gym on Fridays.

Jim

At camp, I liked going on the Ferris Wheel and having chicken and chips lunch at Cicerello’s. I had fun building the raft at the Djarlgarra excursion at the Kent Street Weir and Card Making in IBO.

Reon

On Wednesday, which was the first day of camp, we went to Fremantle for the morning, and I went on the Ferris Wheel, it had good views of Fremantle and the Harbour of Fremantle when you got to the top of the wheel. On the same day we got to the camp, I went on the Flying Fox FOUR times!! On the Thursday, we went to Fremantle Prison and did the Escape Tour, which was great fun!! Afterwards, I had fish & chips at Cicerello’s, and then we went to the Maritime Museum, which I really liked because of the old road maps of Perth and Fremantle. On Friday, we had pancakes for breakfast, and I got a bullseye in Archery. Afterwards, we went swimming, and I enjoyed it. After lunch, we went back to school. I was very tired, and it was an amazing camp.

Cameil

In second semester I have enjoyed IBO, ESSN Sports Carnival and Camp. I like IBO because it is interesting and lots of fun. We are making jewellery. I also like spending time with Mr Arrantash. I had a good time and participated in every event at the ESSN Carnival in Term 3. I got to meet lots of new friends. The sausage sizzle was very good. At the end of the day, I was very tired. I liked the camp because I danced at the disco with my friends. I also liked archery; I had fun hitting the target. I was tired at the end of camp, but I really liked the food.

Ryan

I liked being in Interschool Carnival and ESSN Carnival. I like running around at recess and lunch with other students. I also have fun at IBO playing basketball. At camp, I went on the Flying Fox and wasn’t scared, and I went on it twice. I also liked archery. I tried my best but didn’t hit the target, but I had fun. I also went crazy on the slip and slide in the afternoon on day 2.

Maddison

For IBO, I go to Silent Disco and dance every Wednesday. I think it’s fun. I enjoyed our excursion to Kings Park. I walked with Jai. At camp, I liked swimming and going on the Ferris Wheel in Fremantle. The tour of the Fremantle Prison and Maritime Museum was awesome because I was with my friends. The food at Cicerello’s was really yummy.

Jack

I went to camp at Point Walter and had a good time. I was very independent and had fun dancing at the disco and swimming in the pool. I had lunch at Cicerello’s and visited the Fremantle Prison and Maritime Museum on day 2.

Charli

I liked camp; it was nice. I went on the Flying Fox five times, and one time I laid back in the harness and relaxed. I liked the Fremantle Prison Tour and asked lots of questions about any prisoners who escaped. I liked looking at the Mega Mouth shark from over the top of the tank. I had fun looking at the photos in the gallery there. At camp, we did Archery, and I tried the expert level targets, and I managed to get my arrows onto the target board.

Natashja

I enjoyed going on Day camp to the Maritime Museum and looking at the Mega Mouth. Lunch at Cicerello’s was good, and I fed the birds before I read the sign that said not to feed the birds.

Jai

I liked camp and participated in all the activities. I enjoy relaxing on the egg chair in class during brain breaks and having some quiet time on my iPad.

We wish everyone a wonderful holiday and a happy New Year!

Remarkably, the middle school years have ended, and we have many wonderful highlights of the time we shared. Students have been writing recounts to recall their brilliant achievements and looking at some amazing photos to jog their memories. It’s very interesting to hear their recollections. COVID memories featured a lot but let us focus on the positives. The students would like to share the following in their own words:

Some of our memories from 2019 – 2022

Amy

In 2019 I played basketball with Abbie. This year I liked working in the garden across the road. I listened to the bosses, Heather and Andi.

Abbie

Last year I sat with Paige and Charlie. We played UNO during Peer Support Group (PSG). I like helping the new students.

Matthew

In 2022 I went to the camp and danced during the PJ party. I liked doing Just Dance physical fitness lessons (2020 – 2021).

Isaac

A long time ago, I used to see the chooks, and I used to hang out with them at recess and lunch (2020). I prefer spending time with people now.  Ryan W is one of my favourite friends.

Taky

I am happy to be in this class. Germano looks after me and helps me when I need it.

Germano

We went to camp in 2021, watched the Mucky Duck Bush Band on Tuesday, 24 August, and did the Heel and Toe Polka. I won an award for dancing.

Lachlan

In 2021 I enjoyed PSG time because we could play Minecraft with our friends. In 2022 I liked spending time with Ken. I won the class Duck Award in 2021 – I am very resilient, patient and can manage change – like water off a duck’s back.

Monique

In Indigenous Studies, I learnt Noongar words and how to sing Wanjoo (2021). I attended 3 Interschool Carnivals during my time at middle school. This year I trained, and Mr Fitzy helped me learn how to do the hurdles.

Dylan

In 2019 I helped with the chooks. Also, I went to the basketball carnival in Year 9 and won a medal.

Ryan

I was able to care for the chickens in 2019. I helped with our laundry business in 2020. During the camp this year, I went on the flying fox.

Additionally, the highlight of the term was the Point Walter Camp, and students returned buzzing despite their fatigue. Students enjoyed the activities and visits to Fremantle Prison and The Maritime Museum. A big thank you to Mrs Martlew for organising this year’s camp.

We say goodbye to Matthew, our friend since 2019; he is off to a new school. Keep on dancing, Matthew!

And finally, a big thank you to the parents, siblings, grandparents and carers for their ongoing support over the last four years. We appreciate your assistance, and it has been a pleasure to be part of your child’s educational experience. It’s only the beginning of more great things for your children.

Have a fabulous holiday, and get “ready for learning” (R4L) in 2023!

Memories10W

As we are hurtling towards the end of the year, it is time to reflect on a year of achievements from our class. We recently had ASDAN Moderation for e-Safety and Workright and received glowing reports on the submitted digital portfolios. It is clear that the moderators were impressed with our student’s work and achievements in both modules. Students should be particularly proud of their achievements in Workright as they were placed in various workplaces to achieve their 20 hours. Many have continued working in the formal workplace learning context – two at Roy Hill, one at GSI Café, one at the Cannington Community College Kindergarten and two at the AYLA Inc Opportunity Shop in Cockburn.

Our class has also been involved in the transition program as they work towards moving to the senior campus at Sevenoaks Senior College. Students have had the opportunity to engage in various activities and excursions, including archery, and STEAM activities, such as making parachutes out of shredded paper for raw eggs and constructing towers out of raw spaghetti and marshmallows. They have also participated in two major excursions with the senior students – Point Walter Reserve and Woodman Point. These day trips included bike riding, kayaking, bush walking, fishing and beach games. Each student maturely conducted themselves and participated in all activities without hesitation.

In week 7, most of the students in the class headed off to Point Walter Recreation and Function Centre for the three-day camp. Mrs Martlew organised this camp, and the students had an excellent time participating in the activities, including flying fox, archery and hanging out in the pool. On Thursday, students were taken to prison! Oops, I meant they were given a tour through the Fremantle Prison, where they could see and hear about the conditions and experiences of prisoners in the past. Following lunch at Cicerello’s, they headed to the Maritime Museum, where they explored the interactive displays that told of the historical significance of the Fremantle Port.

Sheree on day camp

The class has also been working on finalising their P-Unit assessments throughout the last few weeks and have achieved some excellent results in Literacy, Numeracy and Business Management and Enterprise. Each student should be proud as they look over their reports at the end of the year.

In week 7, we visited the Pines Bentley Training Restaurant – the students were given a four-course silver service meal to celebrate their final year at middle school. They came dressed in their finery, and each looked grown up and ready for their next chapter.

On Tuesday of week 7, we also said a temporary farewell to Winston, who was heading off on a family holiday. Before he left, he visited Mr Wilson’s office, where he was given the Endeavour Award for his all-round achievements throughout his time at middle school. The Endeavour Award recognises a student who has put conscientious effort into all areas of their work and demonstrates exceptional social skills. Winston is a worthy recipient of this award, and we congratulate him.

Finally, I would like to thank the parents from 10W for their positive support as we navigated this year together. It has been a pleasure working with you and your child, and I wish you all the best for 2023 and beyond. Please have a wonderful and safe holiday break, and I look forward to catching up with you on the senior campus in 2023.

STEM

During this term, students looked at a web-based app called Tinkercad and did 3D designing. Students participated in step-by-step tutorials learning how the program works, and everyone designed a small box-shaped plant. Some classes have even designed houses, intricate pot plants and other miscellaneous items. They have all grasped Tinkercad really well and have been a delight to teach!

Travel training and STEM program: Students from 8C were fortunate enough to go on an excursion with their class and Miss Laudehr to Perth Zoo. They walked to the train station, caught the train, swapped trains in the Perth Underground, caught the ferry from Elizabeth Quay to Perth Zoo and then caught the bus back to school. They displayed the school’s AIR values. They showed Achievement by getting to all public transport on time. They showed Independence crossing the road safely, signalling the bus, stopping it on time for our bus stop and scanning onto public transport with their SmartRider cards. They showed Respect by being mindful of other passengers on public transport, waiting their turn, having a go at trying Subway and waiting patiently, so everyone got to see the animals they desired at the Zoo. As students learnt in STEM, some animals like to hibernate during the heat of the day; that was the case with many animals on our visit. However, students still got to see elephants, red panda bears, orangutans, baboons, penguins, a tiger and native Australian animals. They had a blast, and we are proud of them and the maturity they displayed.

Happy holidays everyone!

Our students have worked hard this year, and I am incredibly grateful to have been their teacher. It has been a fantastic year.

We have had a super busy term writing Christmas or Eid stories; creating holiday cards and Christmas cards; learning to play Battleships in Maths, and completing reading comprehension in Literacy.

Students had an amazing time at the year 11 lunch at The Groove Train in Carousel. They enjoyed socialising with friends and having beautiful meals. We had a lovely walk there and were lucky it wasn’t too hot.

The Arts Expo was a great success, with the students displaying their work beautifully. Thank you to Mrs Spreadborough and Mrs Alem Gebermedhin for coming to view the students’ hard work.

We have continued transition sessions with the year 10 students coming to the senior school each Monday. We also had our second transition outing to Woodman Point, where the students completed a scavenger hunt, swam in the beautiful clear ocean, and fished off the jetty. Students were then treated to bacon, egg and salad, or egg and salad burgers for lunch. It was such a wonderful, warm, fun day.

I hope you all have a fabulous holiday, and I look forward to seeing you again next year.

Annie Foyster

Workplace Learning

Year 10: The students have been visiting the senior school as part of transition and taking part in travel training which has been very successful. We celebrated their success with a morning tea at Belmont Forum. Many of the students already have placements organised for 2023, and we are looking forward to working with them and expect they will be equally successful with their workplace learning in the new year.

Year 11: The students are set to become the new leaders of our senior school. We are confident they will be positive role models for our younger students and also good ambassadors for our school!

Year 12 and Pathways: We already miss these students and wish them all the best with their plans!

We look forward to working with all our students and navigating the new challenges 2023 will surely bring.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and the Ignite Award

Awards WA offers two awards to encourage young people to achieve their full potential through participation in physical activity, skills, community service and embarking on adventurous journeys.

The Ignite Award allows students aged 9 – 13 in WA to participate in these activities, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award allows young people worldwide aged 14 – 24 to explore new opportunities.

At CCESC, students in years 7, 8 and 10 participate in the Awards. It was hoped that the Mayor of the City of Canning, Patrick Hall, Jessica Mosely and Laura Seymour from Awards WA would present these Awards to our students. However, due to COVID-19 concerns for community health and safety, the Award Ceremony had to be cancelled last month. The students received their Awards at the end-of-year assembly instead. Congratulations to these students on completing their Awards:
