From the Principal’s Desk

Kaya, and welcome to our second last newsletter of the year. We have had a super exciting term, and there is still more to come.

Firstly, it was great to see our departing year 12 students celebrate the end of their secondary schooling at the presentation ceremony at Curtin University. A lot of students didn’t attend, which is understandable because it is a very long afternoon. Those students who did attend looked great and were very mature and responsible. The parents and family there on the day must have been so proud. Congratulations to Brianna Exell for taking out the VET award and to Ashley Pabai for taking out the AMPOL All-Rounder award. Our award winners:

Preliminary English (PENG): Jeremy Dela Serna
Preliminary Mathematics (PMAT): Sharnie Ransome
Preliminary Health and Physical Education (HPE): Amihan Parker
Foundation English (FENG): Charlotte Brims
Foundation Mathematics (FMAT): Brianna Exell
Foundation Health and Physical Outdoor Education (FHPO): Jarrod Hicks
ASDAN PSHE (Personal Social Health and Economic Education) – Jasmine Sunderland

Special thanks to Mrs Whittington for organising the leavers' dinner at Brando’s in Vic Park. I saw everyone enter, and the students dressed up very smartly. It was a fun night, with many staff attending to share in the students’ celebrations. Fun awards were handed out, and full bellies were the order of the night.

The last day of term 3 was the middle school athletics carnival held with CCC at Ern Clark Athletics track. The day was a great success thanks to Mr Hussein and his team. The main thing about carnivals is participating and cheering on your teammates. Our students entered every event, and there were many outstanding efforts. Ryan Grant won runner-up champion boy for year 9, and Monique Park was runner-up champion year 10 girl. They both attended the mainstream interschool athletics carnival.

Mr Hussein also organised our team for the ESSN Secondary Athletics Carnival at Atwell College. I heard it was a fantastic day, and we came away with the Champion School pennant, which hangs proudly above my office door. I am sure some of our Special Olympians would have helped us win.

We farewell most of our year 11 students this week and wish them all the best. They enjoyed their lunch at the Groove Train, and I heard many stories about the décor and the food. You will all be our school leaders next year, and I know Mr Griffin and Mrs Foyster will have lots of work for you next year.

How good was Lachlan Nightingale on the Channel 7 and Channel 9 news for our CANDO Mini Woolies opening. Our amazing checkout operators all did a brilliant job – I am sure they loved seeing themselves on TV as much as I did. Special thanks to Mrs Martlew and our incredible KWS acknowledgment of country team. I want to thank the members of our board who attended as well as the very proud parents there. Many staff were there early to set up for the day, and I thank them for their support and effort. Mrs Carnegie, Miss Laudehr and Mrs Pears were TV stars as well. Lastly, I cannot acknowledge highly enough the work of Ms Bates and Mrs Whittington on this project. The organisation of the launch was first class. There was also an incredible amount of work behind the scenes applying to be the first Mini Woolies school in WA, drafting up sponsorship arrangements, working with the Minister of Education’s office, and so much more. Every obstacle, including a broken fridge, work not being completed on time and change of attendance, was dealt with. As the Woolworth Manager, Sarah Corey, told us – it was the best project opening she had ever been involved with. We will now use all the dairy products that were meant to be in the fridge. The middle school camp will be well supplied with banana muffins and quiche!

Speaking of the middle school camp – keep an eye out on your class Connect page for details of the camp at Point Walter being organised by Mrs Martlew. You will receive a letter and a Consent2Go invite very soon. It promises to be a wonderful experience for the students, and I thank the staff for giving up a lot of their time to attend overnight with the students on camp. I think Mr Arrantash and Mr VW are almost permanently on camp in their swags!

I hope parents/carers attend our upcoming workshops on NDIS school leaver supports and our Triple P parenting workshop – both event details can be found later in the newsletter. We have offered these courses based on feedback from parents and the School Board. If you would like to suggest other programs, please let me know. Our last School Board meeting of the year is on 17 November and is open to the public - please ring the office if you would like to attend the meeting.

Keep an eye on our school Connect, Facebook, Instagram or website for updates.

Class Updates

7D

All students have been working extremely hard towards their learning goals this term. For math rotations, students have been learning about money, time and measurement. Mrs Niazi, Mr Hussein and I continue implementing a tailored functional curriculum for our year 7 cohort.

For the first week back at school, students created their ‘Tokens Wish List’ for term 4. Our Tokens Wish List is an activity we have been doing each term. Students research rewards from Kmart and then work towards them. Here are their wish lists.

On 21 October, our school participated in the ESSN Athletics Carnival at Atwell College. I was incredibly proud to watch all our students participate in all events. Our school’s participation paid off, as we managed to win gold for the carnival. Go Cannington CommunityESC!

For Melbourne Cup, our class participated in many fun activities. Students learnt about the history of the

Melbourne Cup, played a lucky dip sweep of horses, watched the race and then completed a ‘Design a Jockey Silk’ colouring competition. We had a fun day! Here are some of our jockey silk designs.

During literacy, students continued working in their rotation groups, focusing on spelling, direct instructions, phonics, reading, form filling, book review and independent work.

In numeracy, students continued working in their rotation groups, focusing on time, money, and measurement.

In health, our students created a poster to show the difference between the public and private parts of the body.

Jordyn – public and private parts

In cooking, our students made a fruit salad, cheesy bread, and eggs on toast.

It has been a very busy time for the gang in 8C over the last term. We have had two sports carnivals, tried a new enterprise business, and nearly all been victims of the latest lurgy.

Most of our students have attended at least one of the recent sports carnivals, and everyone agrees that they are days packed with fun (and a lot of energy). The middle school athletics carnival was our chance to put all of the time and effort from our fitness routine into practice (the Tug-of-War was definitely a fan favourite), whilst the ESSN Sports Carnival in Atwell was a chance to see many of the same sports from a more FUNtastical angle.

Our new enterprise project is Wax Melts which release a relaxing scent over many hours when melted. We learned about the different types of wax (soy is the best) and how to mix the ingredients and pour them into our silicon moulds. In analysing our businesses, we have decided that our wax melts are best because they can last a long time in storage (unlike our mug cakes) and don’t need to be looked after every day (like our aquaponics farm did).

Making our wax melts

We’re all looking forward to finishing the year and having a relaxing holiday over the Christmas break.

In literacy, we have continued to focus on comprehension, understanding the meaning of what we are reading and learning skills to find the main idea, summarising, predicting and cause and effect. Some of these skills are new to the class, but they have been working hard, and we are starting to see some success in this area.

As part of independent living, the class is starting to learn about oral hygiene and how best to look after our teeth and gums. This is a very important area, and we will be practising some ideas to develop and maintain a good health program.

The class enjoyed their first attempts at making apple pies. Having the pie maker was a big help. We also made vegemite scrolls, which we will continue to do over the coming weeks. It is a lot of fun, but it also develops good skills that students will need in the future and improves mathematics skills in measuring and adding.

Zak is making a scroll

8P goes to the gym every Monday and undertakes circuit work using the equipment. It is a great way to improve fitness, strength and stamina. The students can use most equipment, including exercise bikes, treadmill, rowing machine, cross trainer and free weights. We also go to the gym on Thursdays and undertake a physical therapy circuit design to build strength. The students rotate through a series of activities every two minutes working to the best of their ability to try and attain their personal best performance each week. Seeing the students improve their fitness levels over the year has been great.

Excursion to Kings Park: The year students went to Kings Park for an excursion on Tuesday, 20 September. They met Mr Olman from Boorloo Aboriginal Cultural Experiences for an hour long walk. Mr Olman explained the Noongar six seasons, and we looked at various plants, trees and flowers. This special spring tour focussed on the aromas, sounds and colours specific to the Kambarang season, which runs in October and November. We saw many unique and beautiful wildflowers. Students also had a chance to enjoy the Everlasting Daisy display and observe many different types of birds. Mr Olman ended his tour by playing the didgeridoo. Students enjoyed a picnic lunch before returning to school.

A learning experience

Sports Carnivals: Students have enjoyed two athletics carnivals. One occurred at the Ern Clark Athletics Centre on 23 September, the last day of school. The other athletics carnival was held on Friday, 21 October, at Atwell College reserve. This athletics carnival was run by ESSN (Education Support South Network). Edmund Dann received a certificate for his excellent drawing skills. Students had been practising running, throwing and jumping skills in advance during physical education to compete confidently during both carnivals.

Summer competing

Excursions to Coles for ASDAN: In week 2, students went on an exciting excursion to Westfield Carousel. They practised walking safely on the roads, identified three road signs and interpreted them, located Coles on the shopping centre map, navigated their way through the shopping centre, completed two ASDAN related challenges at Coles, ordered a meal independently at the food court and returned to school on time. Through this excursion, students learnt important life skills and practised functional literacy and numeracy skills in the community.

The final week of term 3 was an exciting and busy week for our class, and we would like to start by sharing some pictures and information recapping those events. On Tuesday, 20 September, we enjoyed the Kambarang Spring Tour at Kings Park as an extension to our classroom learning linked to Aboriginal Studies. The weather was beautiful as we walked along the trail led by the Aboriginal educator, Mr Olman. We enjoyed the aromas, sounds and colours specific to the spring season.

On Wednesday, 21 September, we hosted the end of term assembly, and all of us participated in performing “The Six Noongar Seasons”.

On 23 September, the last day of term 3, we had our Middle School Athletics Carnival at the Ern Clarke Athletics Centre. Most of the students took part in the event and won ribbons. Congratulations to Ryan, who won the medal for the runner-up in the year 9 boys’ category; an outstanding achievement indeed. He was selected to participate in the interschool athletics event in week 2 this term. He did very well in all the events he participated in. Well done, Ryan!

Middle School Carnival

Term 4 has just begun, and we have already been to the ESSN Athletics Carnival at Atwell College. Students enjoyed every moment of participating in various events as a team to take our school to the top position and win the champion team flag. Congratulations to Ryan again for winning the medal for the best boy athlete. Students have worked hard in all subject areas focusing on their IEP goals.

Jai and Ryan

As part of our ASDAN module and Aboriginal Studies, we have been working on a class project in the garden in front of our classroom. Using old car tyres, we made a planter in the “Tiddalick the Frog” model from the Aboriginal Dreamtime story. The project is complete; we have planted some beautiful native plants in the planter and are caring for them.

Working on our garden project

This term is flying past, and we cannot believe we will go to camp in two weeks. We are all looking forward to it.

Here is a summary of our highlights so far :

Workplace learning – ASDAN Work Right: We thank our hosts at Cannington Community Garden, Mrs Stewart Johnson and co, for supporting our students. Our last session was in week 2, but some students are investigating an ongoing commitment outside school hours.

We also thank Mrs Pears and the workplace learning team for providing supplementary WPL opportunities, including travel training. These are important skills to prepare for 2023.

Abbie and Ryan at Cannington Community Garden

Classroom learning: Students have a few tasks remaining for their preliminary courses, and one focus area in Business Management and Enterprise (BME) is creating a product to market and sell. The snails are holding off so far but be quick and put an order in to get a little bit of sunshine in your garden – sunflower seedlings.

Sporting Achievements:

Week 2:

Congratulations to Germano for his extraordinary efforts in Launceston, Tasmania, at the Special Olympics. We watched a delayed telecast of the opening ceremony and felt the champion vibes of all our wonderful CCESC representatives. That was enough for us watching, but no, there were medals to be won! And did they win??!! Oh yes, they did! Our class checked the website daily and had brilliant inside information from Germano’s dad, and what we saw was the amazing camaraderie between the participants and between states too. Watch this space: World Games, Berlin, June 2023!

Week 3:

Well done to Monique, a year 10 representative at the Interschool Athletics Carnival held at Ern Clark Athletics Track. Monique achieved her goal – to improve on last year’s results!

Weeks 3 – 5:

Year 10 students participated in a short swimming program and had a great time refreshing pool safety techniques. These sessions contributed to their Recreational Pursuits hours, and we thank Mrs Woo and Mrs Keyes for their assistance.

Senior Campus Transition: Parents/carers may have noticed that each week is jammed pack with activities at the senior campus. Year 10 students are getting in the swing of what 2023 will look like and feel confident about the “same school, different campus” concept. Updates can be located on Connect Notices.

Thank you!

The students started the term with a pleasing level of enthusiasm. The fact that this is their last term at middle school is not lost on them, and they are keenly engaging in all transition activities. The first two Mondays of the term have seen the class walk to the senior school to join the years 11 and 12 students in activities such as archery, a photo treasure hunt and a STEAM activity involving raw eggs and shredded paper.

Students have also been working on their final ITP projects this term. Projects that have been completed have included research on Pig Island in the Bahamas, countries of interest in Europe, and how to become a paid firefighter for DFES in Western Australia. Other students have been practising their independent living skills by researching a recipe, writing a shopping list, shopping at IGA to purchase ingredients and making the recipe at school. A delicious frittata and some lovely napolitana pasta sauce have been recently produced and devoured, with many people around the school coming to investigate the awesome aromas from our classroom.

On Thursday in week 3, the class went on a walking excursion to Carousel. The students enjoyed choosing rewards up to $20 before the excursion and locating the goods in Kmart on the day. Some excellent rewards were selected, including a candle set, a Harry Potter book, packets of batteries, headphones and deodorant. Everyone stayed within their budget and was pleased to take their rewards home. This excursion provided an excellent opportunity to observe skills such as road crossing, waiting for service in a shop and managing budgeting choices.

With the year beginning to end, we are finalising some of our subjects, such as community service, recreational pursuits and ASDAN. All ASDAN portfolios are complete and ready for external moderation. Each student should be incredibly proud of the effort they have put into their work this year!

Workplace learning continues this term, and most of the class has been allocated a work placement. Winston Blake and Daelen Perkins should be commended on the hours they work each week at Access Office Furniture – starting at 9:30 am and not finishing until after lunch. This extension of hours is helping them build their work resilience. Well done, boys. Other students have been given opportunities to start new work placements, including Roy Hill, a new Café at GSI in Canning Vale and the Kindy at Cannington Community College. These students are benefitting enormously from this program and are representing our school in such a positive way.

The remainder of the term will be busy. Our calendar is looking very full with transition, excursions and the launch of CANDO Fresh Food in week 5. Please keep an eye on your emails for Consent2Go permissions as they come through, there will be many over the next few weeks, and it is helpful if staff don’t have to chase up permissions that haven’t been given.

Thank you for all you do to support your child, and I look forward to working with you for the remainder of 2022.

11F

What a busy term we have had. All students have worked incredibly hard completing assessments at school and finalising work placement hours. Sadly, we are saying goodbye to some students in 11F who are leaving for the rest of the year in week 5. We wish them a great holiday.

Students are excited about the year 11 lunch at The Groove Train in Carousel on Wednesday, 9 November. It will be a lovely event where we can socialise with friends and enjoy quality food.

Students were given the opportunity to take their driver’s theory test this term, and any unsuccessful students will be given another opportunity this term. They need to watch out for good driving skills and any errors other drivers make so they can complete an on-road practice diary recording their observations.

We have started transition with the year 10 students coming to our class each Monday for two hours. We also had our first transition outing to Point Walter on Monday, where the students kayaked, rode bikes and completed a walk. It was such a fun day, and all students and staff were worn out after so much exercise.

The art students hosted an exhibition on Friday, 4 November. It was so lovely to share our artwork. We extend a HUGE thank you to Mrs Janes and the food science group for the delicious sandwiches, zucchini slices, muffins and lamingtons.

We have had a busy start to the term completing our assessments at school and finalising work placement hours. Most students are leaving school in week 5 and are getting excited about the year 11 lunch at The Groove Train.

We have started transition with the year 10 students coming to our class each Monday for two hours, and it was pleasing to see how our year 12 students behaved. They followed instructions, gave feedback, and welcomed the year 10 students into our class. We also had our first transition outing to Point Walter, and the students kayaked, rode bikes and completed a walk. Most students did a great job and enjoyed the fun, challenging activities.

Students who failed to pass their learners will be given another opportunity this term. I hope they continue practising and wish them all the best for the upcoming test. Seeing some students get their learner's permit and begin learning how to drive has been pleasing.

Transition activities

12G

This term, the year 12 students have hit the ground running! With graduation rehearsals, the year 12 breakfast, dinner at Brando’s, the presentation ceremony at Curtin Stadium and transition with the year 10 students.

In week one, the students enjoyed a fully catered breakfast with the college students to celebrate twelve wonderful years of schooling. They enjoyed bacon, eggs, hash browns, croissants and juice. After the breakfast, they participated in their final rehearsal for the presentation ceremony.

The students attended the presentation ceremony at Curtin Stadium on Saturday, 22 October, where they wore their graduation gowns and sashes. It was a long day, and all the students enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to all of the students who attended the ceremony.

Dinner at Brando’s was a huge success! The students enjoyed their meals and behaved like the young adults they have become.

Transition with the year 10 students has begun and has been a huge success, with the year 12s taking the students under their wings. They have participated in team challenges, archery and an excursion to Point Walter, where they rode bikes and scooters, kayaked and went for a lovely walk. There are many more activities to come!

Transition

We have already had three classmates say goodbye, and we will say goodbye to more at the end of week 5. I want to take this opportunity to say that it has been my pleasure teaching this group for the past two years. I have watched them grow from little year 7 students to mature year 12s. I wish all year 12 students the best for their future, and I can’t wait for them to come back and visit to let us know what they have been up to.

Graduation

12J

12J bids you all farewell! Term 4 has seen the students take part in many graduation events. It was fantastic for our students to join the Sevenoaks Senior College students for a tasty graduation breakfast. Students were treated to an array of breakfast treats in a smorgasbord setting. Of course, the real favourites were the hash browns, bacon and croissants!

After breakfast, each student was given a graduation bear, which was signed by the staff and students. These bears will undoubtedly remind them of the wonderful memories they shared whilst at school.

In week 2, the students attended the graduation dinner at Brando’s restaurant in Victoria Park. Students chose their meals from a menu that included pizza, pasta, salads, chicken parmigiana and loads of garlic bread. The students would also like to thank the many staff who attended this event.

Enjoying the dinner

I want to acknowledge all our year 12 students for their attendance, positive behaviour and participation in the graduation ceremony at Curtin University. It has been a pleasure to teach 12J, and I wish the students the best for their future pathways following their time at CCESC.

Workplace Learning

It’s almost the end of the school year already. Some of our year 12 students have already left for the year and are moving into the next phase of life.

Congratulations to Aaliyah for completing Certificate II in Kitchen Operations, which was a massive achievement. Well done.

Congratulations also go to our students who completed a skill set this year. Nabilla and Jarrod completed hospitality, and Brianna excelled in her skill set of animal studies.

Hopefully, students can use these qualifications and studies to gain employment in the future. Bree has already gained employment in the animal industry and thoroughly enjoys working with dogs. Aaliyah is using the remainder of the school year to prove her skills in the hospitality industry, and we are hoping she will be employed before she leaves.

We hosted an appreciation breakfast last week, and the employers were commenting on what a fantastic job our students do while they are in the workplace. Several were keen to welcome more students into their workplace to give them further opportunities.

Some year 10 students have started their workplace learning journey and proved capable and high achievers. They can handle changes in the workplace and school with maturity. A group of year 10 students have begun travel training and have proved they are quietly confident in moving around in the community using public transport.

We are already missing the senior students who have left, but we look forward to working with the remaining students and hope we will have more success stories to report soon.
