From the Principal’s Desk
The 2021 school year started late after the lockdown but everything is settling down. Staff and students are getting to know each other and are working together to achieve the best possible outcomes. With nearly 130 students we are full and have a number of students on a waiting list. We welcome all our new families to the school, we hope you get involved with the school as partners in your child’s education. It is vitally important that we work together as a team and have clear goals about what we are trying to achieve. At Cannington you have a direct link into setting the goals for your child via the ITP/IEP process. It has been gratifying seeing so many parents/caregivers attend meetings with the teachers to get plans formulated. One of our key priorities for our current business plan is that all students documented planning will incorporate therapy and NDIS goals. A second goal is school community partnerships and networks are fostered by all staff to nurture student engagement. We are committed to working together with all stakeholders. The students are at the centre of all we do, we value and need parent/caregiver input.
I would like to welcome the following new staff to our school.

Stay up to date with what is happening via our social media and communication options. Connect is our link between home and the class. Every class has a page with details of what is happening in the class. It is generally updated weekly. We will be adding Consent to Go as a link for excursions - see the article later in the newsletter. Parents/caregivers can access Connect via the website below, or downloading the Connect Now app from the apple app store or google play store. Parents/caregivers sometimes have trouble logging in:
- This is the most common user error. Parents mistake the first number in their "P" number for an "O" letter.
- Parents will incorrectly put their password in at least 3 occasions and lock themselves out.
- Parents copy and paste across from the email into their app without realising; they are also pasting spaces or other special characters.
- Parents will mistake their P number they get from Vacswim and try to use it for Connect. These are different database, systems and numbers.
https://connect.det.wa.edu.au/
If you forget your password, simply click on forget password link on the app or website. If you forget your username, please contact the school.
https://canningtonesc.wa.edu.au/ will take you to our website. Click on the News tab on the top – select latest news - open an article, and on the right-hand side; you add your email to subscribe to the latest news section - you will then receive notifications of news items - only once a day.
Can parents/caregivers please complete the 3rd party permission form by Friday 12 March. Students who do not have sign off from their parents/caregivers will not be able to log into the school network. I would like to remind everyone that all the programs and apps have been tested by the Department of education and have been deemed safe or very low risk.

We have Facebook and Instagram pages. You can comment on items remembering, of course, that we will not tolerate any inappropriate comments. Be positive, and everyone is welcome. Download the Schoolzine app to get our newsletter or click on the News tab – newsletters - on our website. You can subscribe to get a notification for when newsletters come out. We do two per term.
A new website to get young people thinking about how they can apply their skills and explore their interests in a rapidly changing world has been developed in the state.

- For parents: www.education.wa.edu.au/future-skills-and-pathways
I would like to remind parents/caregivers of our school nomenclature and address. We have two campuses, the middle school shared with Cannington Community College and the senior campus shared with Sevenoaks Senior College. We share facilities and resources and pay our proportion of the costs associated with running both campuses. Our school is called Cannington Community Education Support Centre, and our postal address is 147 Wharf Street, Cannington WA 6107. It is very important that the correct school name is used, especially for pensions, allowances and grants.
Our senior students have recently enjoyed the School Ball and are now getting ready for their camp at Busselton. A tremendous amount of work has been put into organising the camp. We are very fortunate to have a partnership with the Department of Communities via our DFES Cadet unit. This partnership heavily subsidises camp costs.
March 26th will see our school go to Cockburn ARC for our annual Fun Day. It is a day where we all get together and get to see everyone in our school. We have fun, share a laugh, try something new, take turns and help others. Letters have been sent home at the time of writing.

School Board
We seek interested people to join our School Board which consists of parent, community and staff representatives. The Board is responsible for overseeing the governance of the school. It fosters positive relationships between the school and the community and promotes the school, and provides advice. The Board meets once per term. If you are interested, please contact this school.
Secondary Assistance Scheme
$115 Clothing Allowance – paid to parent or school
$235 Education Program Allowance – paid to school
Applications close on 1 April 2021
The Western Australian Department of Education provides an allowance to assist eligible families with secondary schooling costs. The ABSTUDY Supplements Allowance is available to valid Services Australia (Centrelink) cardholders; this funding supplements the Centrelink ABSTUDY Fees Allowance payment.
Eligibility Criteria
Parent or guardian must hold one of the following cards:
- Centrelink Health Care Card
- Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
- Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession Card
Please bring your card to the office before the end of term 1 and complete the form to make your claim.
Consent to Go
We are excited to announce that we will soon be offering our families Consent2Go. This digital solution easily enables you to keep your child’s health records accurate and provide consent for school events, excursions and camps in a secure and timely manner.
We are always looking for ways to enhance our student care, and after careful evaluation of our requirements and providers in the market, we have decided to use Consent2Go. Consent2Go is a direct provider of services to the school and must comply with our Privacy policy.
Consent2Go is used in many other schools across Australia and New Zealand and is highly effective.
Why are we changing?
For student safety, it is vital that their information is as up to date as possible and complies with government regulations, the processes we currently have to support this are complex and time-consuming for all involved, and we have been looking for a superior solution.
Consent2Go will replace our current process (notes home etc) and be the channel that informs you on school incursions, excursions and camps, obtaining consent, and being the collection point for student health information.
It has an easy to use parent interface, and I’m confident you will find it a much easier process for your child/children.
Further details will be provided closer to roll out.
School Ball
On Friday 19 February, some of our students were treated to a very special and unforgettable evening at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Perth, amongst the glitz and glamour. The school ball is a chance for our young people to get dressed up, sometimes unrecognisably! Saying that we were amazed by the transformations is an understatement.
Six of our students attended. The food was incredible. Congratulations to Kayleb Dockary for being crowned Dancing King.
Many thanks to all staff involved behind the scenes and showed up on the night to make sure the event went smoothly.

Class Updates
7C
It has been a fantastic start to 2021 with the 7C students adjusting to life at high school, getting to know the school campus and making new friends.
This term, we have been getting to know each other in the class, sharing facts about ourselves and learning about others. The class has also had an amazing opportunity to be mentored by both of the year 9 classes giving our students many friendly faces around the school to get help from if they need it.
The class has also developed a fitness routine with the students voting on which exercises they wanted to include in their morning fitness routine.

As part of our morning routine, the class has also been learning about Australia's different states and territories.

7M
7M has had a fantastic start to the school year, with students settling into their routines and making new friends. We had an unexpected delay due to the Covid lockdown, and I would like to thank the parents and students for your understanding and support during this challenging time.
Currently, we are in the active planning phase of the year as we develop IEP goals for each student while our students are busy completing diagnostic testing. I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet most of our parents and therapists at our IEP meetings and appreciate their time and input.
Year 7 is an exciting time, and I look forward to sharing this journey throughout the year via our next newsletter and our class Connect page, 7M. I wish all our students and families the best of luck and good health for 2021.
Ricky Mitchell

Learning is fun
8JS
Who can believe your children have been at CCESC for a year now? They have grown up so much as they enter year 8. This year's start was slightly unusual due to the sudden lockdown costing us a week of face to face learning. The first week back at school with the mandatory wearing of face masks as part of COVID restrictions was interesting; however, 8JS coped and continued to work.
IEP meetings have started well, and it has been good to have therapists and other service providers attend. Thank you to all the parents for finding time to liaise with the therapists and attend the meetings.
I’m looking forward to a busy term with more updates in the next newsletter.

“All about me”
8SS
The school year's start was unusually different this year, firstly because we lost a week due to the sudden lockdown. Secondly, we started the first week back at school with the mandatory wearing of face masks as part of COVID restrictions. Despite these changes, students are to be commended for the excellent way in which they adjusted themselves and continued to practice hand hygiene and physical distancing wherever possible to keep themselves and others safe.
In the first week of school, we spent valuable time in class, sharing our thoughts and making important decisions in setting classroom rules and expectations. We also went through our timetable and discussed the slight changes to subjects and staff from the previous year, and we are slowly getting used to it. Our day begins with the morning routine, including sensory walk, jump jam, and fitness exercise. This year, we have also added keyword signing and BTN Newsbreak to our morning routine.
For enterprise, we are making pasta from scratch, strictly following the health and hygiene guidelines. Mr Arrantash is running the program, and we have started by making a sample batch to test the positives and negatives before running the business in full swing. In the coming weeks, we will be naming our business, designing a suitable logo, setting targets, budgeting, conducting surveys etc. It is going to keep us very busy.
IEP meetings have started well, and it was good to have therapists and other service providers attend the meeting. A big thank you to all the parents for making adjustments and finding time to liaise with the therapists and attend the meetings. It was great!
We are looking forward to a busy term with more updates in the next newsletter.

We have had a busy start to the year and are glad to be back at school after the holiday break and the small hiccup of a brief lockdown. We did not like wearing masks the first week back. Many of us found it hard to breathe, and the masks gave us headaches. Even though this was the case, 9M staff were very proud of us for wearing our masks vigilantly. Some very extraordinary designs were worn, from Disney to Marvel, even some hand-drawn ones.
We want to take the opportunity to give Daelen a warm welcome to our room. Even though we know Daelen from around the school already, we were very excited to learn he would become a permanent student in our class. We have also welcomed Khalid, who is new to the school and in our class. It is lovely that we can make new friends.
This year we partake in Aboriginal Studies as a subject. So far, we have learnt about the origins of the Aboriginal flag, and we have each made our own. To integrate this with Literacy, Mrs Martlew has started reading us the novel ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ by Doris Pilkington and Nugi Garimara.
Science is once again proving to be a big hit with us. We learnt that you could indeed stand on paper cups without squashing them. When you try standing on the individual cups, they all get crushed. That's because all of your weight is pressing down on the cup. When you place many cups under cardboard, the cardboard distributes or spreads out your weight over all the cups. So each cup has to support only a portion of your weight. We had a marvellous time conducting this experiment, especially when the staff got involved. Many laughs were had at the staff’s expense when it all came crashing down. We are holding some top-secret videos to ransom the staff. We may be swayed to air them to the top bidders.
What some of the students think about year 9 so far:
Jessica |
I like doing year 9 work |
Dylan |
I like BTN watching it and then doing the Kahoot quiz |
Jayden |
I enjoy making different meals in cooking |
Khalid |
I am enjoying being at a new school making new friends |
Daelen |
I am enjoying getting to know everyone in my new class and seeing my old classmates at recess and lunch |
Winston |
I enjoy D&T. We have started making a pencil holder truck |
Jaimie |
Being back at school with my friends |
Sarah |
I enjoy going to the library and borrowing books |
Omar |
I like art we have made a fish in the ocean picture so far |
Sheree |
I enjoy feeding the fish every day and saying hello to Mr Wilson |

It's been an exciting start to 2021 despite the slight hiccup at the start. Students returned for their first week in week 2 but were all ready to go. Well done, students, for demonstrating READY FOR LEARNING (R4L) attitudes and behaviours from the very start.
Some highlights so far include the year 9 peer support group (PSG) pilot initiative to support the new year 7 students. This initiative ties in with the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (Bronze), and students are demonstrating the service component. Further to this, students develop their leadership skills and make school a positive experience for our newest members. Thanks to the year 7 teachers for their enthusiasm and support.
Most students in this class are already fixated on the student councillor nominations, campaigning and voting processes. This discussion commenced in 2020! Students will have an opportunity to market themselves and develop the necessary relationships with their peers, and regardless of the outcome, all students will benefit from participating.
Students inherited the school's veggie patch from Mrs Whelan's 2020 class. Thank you for a fabulous handover and debrief notes that we are using to help us with our 2021 enterprise project. Students are revising OSH requirements by demonstrating safe workplace behaviours and contributing to the maintenance of the garden.
Indigenous Studies in year 9 will provide students with a comprehensive exploration of First Nations People's histories and the wealth of cultures, rituals, and languages and extend students' intercultural understanding. Our sessions will commence with an Acknowledgement of Country, and students will have the chance to rehearse and deliver at other appropriate times. The class extends their welcome to indigenous and non-indigenous members of our school community who might contribute their skills, knowledge, stories and other resources.
Students continue to use Connect at least twice a week at school, and parents/carers are encouraged to view the posts to see what has been happening in the classroom. Connect information is updated regularly and allows parents/carers to use cues for starting that sometimes challenging discussion of "What did you do at school today?" A more direct focus can help our students, so referencing some of the work posted on Connect is a great way to get the conversation started. If you need help with Connect, please let me know.
We are looking forward to continued success throughout the year.

10J
It was a funny start to the year seeing all our students return to school wearing masks! They came in all colours, shapes and sizes, and we were so lucky that this only lasted for a week.
10J has been busy starting new units and courses along with the year 10 curriculum.
Recreational Pursuits forms part of the year 10 program, and this term, we have been fortunate to go to 10 Pin Bowling every Wednesday. There is fierce competition amongst the year 10 cohort, with Jaxon Hay taking out the highest score of 150 to date.
As part of the ASDAN program, we are completing the Work Right Unit. This enables our students to visit ten different industries and organisations to look at various jobs and roles. By looking at many businesses, our students can see what kind of jobs they may choose for future placement in the Workplace Learning Program. Last week we spent time at Cannington Leisureplex looking at the many facilities and different types of jobs that are available at the complex.
We have continued with our interest-based options (IBO) program, which enables the students to choose and participate in various activities on Wednesday afternoon. Our students are enrolled in either diamanté painting, scrap-booking, sport, cooking, Karaoke and dancing in the silent disco.
10J is looking forward to the many exciting events they will be participating in throughout the year.

Work Right at Leisureplex
10W
This term has been one of the strangest starts to a year. The first week of having to wear masks was strange, and we were so grateful to be able to finally take them off at the beginning of the second week.
Mrs Whelan did an activity with us that demonstrated how each of us is connected through at least one common element – we used string to connect us with the comment of ‘me too!’ Each of us has something in common with the rest of our class members, and this keeps us looking out for each other when we are out and about, around the school.
Me Too
In Literacy, Mrs Whelan is reading ‘Charlotte’s Web’ to us. We are enjoying learning about friendship and loyalty and the importance of looking out for each other.
We started the year with a rush, with an excursion on the first Wednesday of the term to Zone Bowling as part of our Recreational Pursuits program – we need to participate in a minimum of 55 hours of recreational activities this year.

In our ‘Workright’ program, we have started our Industry visits, with an excursion to the Cannington Leisureplex in week 3 and upcoming excursions to Hambley’s IGA and Bunnings planned over the second part of the term.

Work Right
Our Business Management and Enterprise project this year is hiring plants for school offices and classrooms. We have collaborated with the other year 10 class and come up with the name ‘Fancy Plants Plant Hire’ – this term, we are managing the plants' maintenance, and next term, the other class will take this role over from us. It is interesting getting to know the people who hire our plants when we visit to maintain them weekly.
In Community Service, we are currently investigating an area around Cannington that we can help keep clean through ‘Adopt-a-spot’. We are particularly interested in the Smart Park on Wharf Street and will keep you posted on this activity. Once again, we need to acquire 55 hours of Community Service this year through various activities designed to support our local community.

11G
We have had a busy start to the year. All students have settled in nicely to the senior school and are getting used to not having a school bell!
As part of their English, HPE, ASDAN and DFES programs, all students participated in a First Aid Course in week 3. It was great to see the students asking relevant questions and practising their CPR skills.
Most students have begun work as part of ADWPL and are enjoying their workplaces – even if there were a few tired bodies at the end of their first day at work!
Finally, the year 11 students participated in a beach safety session run by Surf Lifesaving at Cottesloe Beach in week 4. They had a fantastic day practising beach safety skills and playing games – it was a 39 degree day, so it was the perfect place to be!

12B
What an extraordinary start to the year! The students in 12B did such an excellent job wearing their masks in the first week of school. Our beginning of the year class photo will go down in history! We would like to welcome a new student to our class, Reuben Spreadborough. He has been a wonderful addition to our class, and we enjoy his funny jokes every day! Reuben named our class mascot Baron the ox. Baron is hardworking, dependable and quiet – everyone is trying to be a little more like Baron this year.
Friday week 3 was a momentous occasion for some of our class. They attended the school ball at the Pan Pacific Hotel. Everyone looked very sharp on the night. Two of our students danced the night away – Kayleb Dockary jagged the ‘Dancing King’ award, and Reuben was the last man standing! Where do they get their energy?
We had a big week of ITP meetings in week 3, and the students have come up with some worthy goals for themselves. Thank you to all the parents and therapists who came to the meetings. Read below to find out more about what we are learning this term:
English |
We are learning about job skills and qualities and updating resumes |
ASDAN |
We are creating a ‘life plan’ with goals for the future |
Maths |
We are adding and subtracting money |
Health and Physical Education |
We are learning about healthy eating and team games |
DFES |
We are learning about water safety |
SDERA |
We are learning about resilience |

Pathways H
The staff and students are back and ready to tackle 2021! It is lovely to see familiar faces and to share our never-ending holiday stories.
ASDAN - Careers and experiencing work |
The students have been busy listing their strengths and weaknesses. They selected 3 smart goals they would like to achieve by the end of the year, identified who will assist them and strategies in achieving them. They are currently working towards updating their resumes and preparing for a mock interview. |
ASDAN- Living Independently |
Students have been learning about the importance of banking. They have so far listed the different banks we have in Australia, what the banks do, the process of opening a bank account, documents required, defined the ATM, deposit, direct debt, interest and account balance. |

The students have also commenced practising for the OLNA testing.
The class is very excited about the commencement of HPO. The theme for this semester is team sports. Students were allowed to select soccer, basketball, water polo or table tennis. I think it’s fair to say water polo is the winner!
Finally, the students took part in a St John first aid training course. It was a great opportunity to either revisit or learn about DRSABCD steps. It was pleasing to see students taking the course seriously and their ability to retain information.
Mustafa Hussein

Pathways G
Pathways G has had a busy yet enjoyable start to the year, and it is pleasing to see the students settling in and getting familiar with new routines and new staff. We have a good class that is energetic and social, and they have all started this term successfully.
We will be having some of our MAP meetings this week as part of the ITP process, and it will be great to identify and revisit goals and celebrate how much we can achieve each year.
We have begun learning about different supermarkets' prices for essential items and identifying what changes we would like to make this year in ASDAN/Literacy classes. This has created some interesting discussions and ideas.
In recreation pursuits, we have our first excursion to Cannington Leisureplex booked for March. This will complement our camp preparation, where we revisit practical beach safety skills. Some class members will be playing water-polo, soccer, table tennis, boccia and basketball team games and are learning basic game tactics.
In numeracy classes, the students have started Mathletics and new work units, including money and time and enjoy counting their frequent flyer tokens and claiming rewards.
Most students have commenced ADWPL and are all travelling into the community to various locations with minimal fuss. It is exciting to see some students completing their SBT hours and starting their modules.
We have most students indicating they will attend the Busselton Camp in week 6.

Design and Technology
Year 7 Woodwork
Students have been introduced to woodwork this year. They have made a great start and are getting used to working safely in the workshop. They have completed a token holder for their classroom desk, so they have a place to store their reward tokens as they collect them during the school day. Students are working on a finger car which will be a project they will take home. We are making projects designed to introduce the students to a range of entry-level tools, machinery, and skills to learn to be comfortable in the workshop and enjoy the success of finishing a project and taking it home.
Year 8 Woodwork
Students will complete a site and workshop safety induction as their first two lessons. We think it is vital for our students to participate in regular safety inductions as this is accepted good practice in the modern workplace. Year students are making a pot stand from pine. This project requires students to do lots of measuring and cutting by hand, which are essential skills to master.

Pot stands
8JS Enterprise
8JS has decided to go into worm farming as their enterprise this year. The plan is to supply worm castings to support the school’s very productive garden. We have started with 2000 worms. There has been a lot of banter in the classroom, as many students would like to give them all names. This problem became more difficult when we told the students that each worm is a boy at one end and a girl at the other end! Students have been learning about the types of food worms need to be healthy. They have also learnt that onion, citrus and meat products are not suitable for worms. We have asked participating students to bring food scraps from home to help feed the worms.
Worm farming
Woodwork goes mobile in 2021!
This year, we have a mobile woodwork bench that we can take to students who find the main workshop to be a sensory overload. This provides opportunities for students who have missed out on participating in a woodwork program in the past.
Woodwork goes mobile!
Year 9 Woodwork
All students will complete a site and workshop safety induction as their first two lessons. We think it is important for our students to participate in regular safety inductions as this is accepted good practice in the modern workplace. Students are working on completing a pencil holder, which is mounted on a truck that looks like a rocket launcher. There are many components to make and assemble to complete the project.
Making a pencil holder
Enterprise 7M
Year 9 students raised over $700 last year from recycling aluminium cans. 7M is expanding this program in 2021 to include eligible plastic and cardboard drink containers. Students will be picking up containers from within and around our school as a part of their community service program. The students have a large green garden bag set up in the garden where all types of aluminium cans and plastic bottles can be dropped off. They will sort containers into plastic types and crush the cans donated. For this project to work, we need families to help with recycling by separating their eligible containers from the household rubbish and sending them to school with students. (every aluminium beverage can sold in WA is can be donated through our school, including those that previously contained a percentage of alcohol). The garden gate is open in the morning before school for containers to be dropped off. We have decided not to collect glass containers due to breakage and manual handling issues that may arise with collecting glass. Please see the image of some of the eligible containers we are now collecting.
Year 10 Woodwork
The first year 10 project this year is to complete a quantity of large wooden steam train toys that were started last year by year 10 students. When completed, these toys will be stored and sold as market day items. There are many components to make, paint and assemble. The next project will be a spice rack that introduces a table router to form the front edge of the shelves.
DFES Cadets
Year 10 DFES Cadets have been introduced to the program and have identified all the services co-ordinated by DFES that are primarily made up of volunteers. Students have also been learning about bushfire prevention, preparation and suppression as a part of their coursework. The cadets have also been learning to work as a team. They have been tasked with moving a large boat without touching the hull across the oval and building an emergency shelter with supplied components and no instructions!
Tradestart
Tradestart students have got off to a good start. We are spending the early weeks of this course working on workshop safety inductions and looking at the general area of occupational health and safety in the workplace. Students are making a small dog kennel model that requires them to study the details of a working drawing and then cut and measure accurately to complete the task. The next project will involve planning, purchasing, and constructing a storage shed on the Wharf Street site. Students enjoy these projects because they are ‘real work’, and the result becomes a part of the school.
Mark Arrantash
Workplace Learning
Our year commenced with many year 11 students attending “Meet and Greets”, followed by them starting their placements. It was a great start for all our senior students, with some going out for the first time.
This year for some of our Pathway students, another new venture is their participation in the ACTIV Internship program. This is a school/employment-based internship designed to facilitate preparing students for work and connecting them to employers through various job placements. Students will attend once a week for the school year. There was positive feedback from students after their first attendance.
Congratulations to Jason Petoe, Charlotte Brims and Wade Robinson, who have been accepted into a Hospitality and Logistics Skills Sets at South Metro TAFE. Jason will attend the Bentley campus, and Charlotte and Wade will attend the Fremantle campus.
As the new year commences with new ventures for our students, it is pleasing to see their determination and enthusiasm in the placements and programs they have started. We are looking forward to an exciting year.

PBS in a Nutshell
In 2015 CCESC began the journey towards implementing a school-wide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) system to promote and support a safe, consistent and positive school environment for all. Developed over 20 years ago, PBS is now internationally recognized and implemented in over 1400 schools.
PBS in 8SS
We are off and running into 2021, and students have been receiving tokens for their Achievement Independence and Respect. The Year 8 classes have chosen to track their token progress on an Olympic running track. This is an excellent way for students to see how they are progressing individually. The student’s tokens also get added to the classroom tally, encouraging them to work as a team to achieve their class goal of 4000 tokens for a movie.
Work Right
STOP! CAUTION! DANGER!
The Work Right group went on an excursion to a safety equipment store.
Reuben, Olivia, Ryan and Taimana make up the Work Right group this year and to get term 1 kicked off. We visited WA Safety in Welshpool to get a first-hand look at the variety of safety equipment used across different industries, including; mining, road works, hospitality, construction and the medical industries, to name just a few.
As a bonus, we caught a train from Cannington to Welshpool. We had the opportunity to get our steps in for the day with a walk to and from the train stations. The students used this excursion to simulate the steps they would take on days they would work as part of their work placement.
As the photos suggest, fun and educational time were had by all!

I’m coming to love these little inserts. The last time I wrote in the newsletter, I spoke about my garden and how it takes work. I’m still busy in the garden. My latest struggle is tackling my Bougainvillea. Have you ever had one of these? I cut it back and not even two weeks later is back up again! It’s is tough as nails but also absolutely beautiful!
So, where am I going with this?
I think we can look at this plant, like us, as a college community. Coronavirus has been hacking away at us very hard. We get cut down, yet we know that we can get through it. We learn to grow regardless. We flourish and keep things looking beautiful. Keep a positive outlook. If you get knocked back, don’t let it drag you down - get back up bigger, better and more beautiful than ever!

Belonging
Making social connections in our lives is important for our sense of belonging and an essential ingredient to a productive and fulfilling life. When we feel a part of something, it can do wonders for our mood and help us feel good about ourselves and others. Catching up with friends, staying close to family, joining a club or team, or joining in community and school events can all add to our sense of belonging and, in turn, help to maintain good mental health.
This term, students at Cannington Community Education Support Centre have many opportunities to participate in events that promote belonging. The senior students have already participated in several outdoor education excursions. They have had their annual school ball, the camp is a week away, and Harmony Day will be celebrated in week 7. At the middle school, the year 10 students have started on their Rec Pursuits excursions. Students on both campuses have the opportunity to connect with others by participating in daily breakfast clubs and lunchtime activities.
Perhaps this is a great time to reflect and plan a few social events for you and your friends and family? For those looking for another way to encourage your young people to stay connected after school, Canning Youth has a whole new program for Term 1. Check out the details below.

A Word from the School Psychologist
A big welcome back, everyone! I'm hoping everyone had a lovely and safe break with family and friends.
The start of the year has been a busy one so let's take the time to pause, breathe and take in what's all around us. This month (March), we're being encouraged to take some time to look within. Learning to be more mindful and aware can do wonders for our well-being in all areas of life - like the way we eat, the things we notice or our relationships. It helps us get in tune with our feelings and stops us dwelling on the past or worrying about the future - so we get more out of the day-to-day. Please find below the link to the Mindful in March calendar for 2021.
