From the Principal’s Desk
2021 has been a challenging yet highly rewarding year. We have been so lucky in Western Australia to escape most of the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of us have family and friends overseas, and it is a vastly different story over there. February 5th will see our borders open, and the virus will most certainly enter the state and be locally transmitted. I hope, as a community, we are all prepared. The school presented its remote learning plan to the school board last week. We have also completed our COVID preparedness checklist. We have adequate masks and hand sanitisers and have provisions for online learning. All education workers at our school will be fully vaccinated by the commencement of the 2022 school year.
A huge thank you to our year 10 leavers who presented the school a huge Street Art mural with our school values acronym AIR spray-painted on it. It looks fantastic, and we will find a prominent place to display it. We have had a number of assemblies for the year 10 students this week. They have a final Optus stadium visit and the IBO excursion to finish the year off. It is very important to remember that the students are still enrolled at Cannington Community ESC. Some year 10 staff will move up to the senior campus at Sevenoaks with the students to help them transition to their new surroundings.
All families should have received their son or daughters IEP/ITP reports via Connect. If you have not, please contact the school, and we will ensure you get a copy. Staff will be available till Friday lunchtime to discuss the reports if needed. Early next year, staff will organise IEP/ITP meetings. The students can all be proud of their efforts, and I loved reading the reports before making my comments and signature. We do offer an extensive curriculum to our student body. Everybody is good at something, and it is very gratifying to see the students flourish.
We will say goodbye to numerous staff. Mrs Goodin and Mr Panton have completed their contracts. Mrs Kim has resigned as an education assistant to take up relief teaching. Miss Jones is staying in the middle east teaching and has resigned from the Department of Education. Mr Sands and Mr Mitchell have moved to other schools to further their careers. We thank all of these staff and wish them well for the future. Several new staff will be starting with us next year, and it is very exciting. We will publish a complete staff list in our first 2022 newsletter.
Both Sevenoaks Senior College and Cannington Community College will have new principals for the 2022 school year. I hope they continue to be as inclusive as their predecessors. We have excellent working relationships with our partner schools. The City of Canning project has brought our boards together, and it has been very productive. We plan on continuing to meet as a group next year. Mrs Cinnamon Bonnefin, our long-serving member and ex-board chair, is stepping down as both of her children have left the school. I would like to sincerely thank Cinnamon for all her work for our school. A vacancy exists, so please consider nominating.
We turn 21 next year - do you want to help plan the party - stay tuned to our social media and newsletter for details of the next planning meeting. It was agreed to have the fete in term 4 next year at the last meeting. We plan to have a time capsule, some music and food!!! Ideas and volunteers are welcome.
I would like to acknowledge the staff for all their collective efforts. There are a number of great teams in our school with everybody playing their part. They thoroughly deserve their holiday break. On behalf of all the CCESC staff@CANDO – we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Stay safe, share time with loved ones and have some fun.

2022 Secondary Assistance Scheme (Applications close 8 April 2022)
The Western Australian Department of Education provides an allowance to assist eligible families with secondary school costs.
Parents/guardians must apply for the Secondary Assistance Scheme (SAS) each school year (annually) – applications do not carry forward to future years.
To be eligible for the allowance, the parent/guardian must hold a Service Australia (Centrelink) or Veterans’ Affairs card that represents a statement of income for the family.
The allowance consists of two components:
- $115 clothing allowance paid directly to the parent/guardian or the school.
- $235 educational program allowance paid directly to the school.
Application is made by the parent or guardian for student’s enrolled in years 7-12 studying a full-time secondary course at a Western Australian public school.
Eligibility Criteria: Parent or guardian must hold one of the following cards:
- Centrelink Health Care Card
- Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
- Veterans’ Affairs Pension Concession Card
Please note: The only Veterans’ Affairs card that meets the criteria is the blue card that is issued annually and expires in December each year. This card is income means-tested.
Please come into the office and complete the required form during term 1, 2022.
Class Updates
7C
The 7C class has had a great term 4, and we are all looking forward to a well-earned break at the end of next week. The class has worked hard to complete learning goals and should be proud of their achievements. One of the significant events has been the Ignite ceremony at the City of Canning offices this term. All our students received certificates for completing their Ignite Level 3 qualification. Our class also completed their ASDAN Key Steps Certificate 1 level qualification this term and should receive their certificates shortly. Well done to all the students in the class for their hard work this year, and we look forward to seeing them all again early next year.

As we approach another well-deserved break, 7M students can reflect on their successful transition to high school this year. After tentative beginnings, it has given me pleasure to see our students become comfortable in their new environment, learn and make new friends.
Congratulations to all our students who achieved their Level 3 Ignite Certificate and ASDAN Key Steps Certificate 1, a fantastic achievement. Our students worked very hard throughout the year, displaying dedication and pride in their work. In the last few weeks, we have been focusing on improving our reading comprehension (literacy) and multiplication/division (numeracy) in preparation for year 8. Some interesting subjects/activities we have been learning this term include; Cooking (Mrs Armstrong); Woodwork (Mr Arrantash); Indigenous Studies (HASS); Biology/life cycles (Science); Rounders (PE), and Christmas craft/card making.
Our big event this term has been our swimming lessons at Cannington Leisureplex. Our students relished the opportunity to participate in the lessons and learn about water safety. Students from both year 7 classes were great ambassadors for our school, demonstrating their independence by going out into the community and using a public facility safely.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fantastic support staff who have contributed to our class this year, particularly Mrs Imai; Mrs Best; Mrs Pieri, Mrs Carroll; Mrs Cunningham, Mr Muhammad and Mrs Bhoraniya. Another thank you to our fantastic support/options teachers this year; Mrs Woon (PATHS); Mrs Goodin (Art); Mr Arrantash (Woodwork/Enterprise); Mr Panton (Health), and Mrs Armstrong (Cooking).
We look forward to our term 4 assembly in week 10. I know our students are also getting excited about our IBO excursion at the Cannington Leisureplex, and I look forward to seeing everyone participating and having fun on the day. Finally, I would like to thank all our wonderful parents who have helped prepare and support our students throughout a busy year. I have been lucky to have a great class, which has been a pleasure to teach. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday with their families, and I send my best wishes to all for 2022!

Wow! I can’t believe we have almost completed year 8. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we all met for the first time at year 6 transition in 2019. The students worked hard to complete 60 hours of work towards their ASDAN Key Steps Module and achieve two certificates.
All the students should be commended for completing all the requirements to achieve their Level 4 Certificate in Ignite Award. An award ceremony was held on the 17th November at the City of Canning, where the students received their Ignite awards from the Mayor.
We have continued to work hard during term 4 and have started to get into the holiday spirit. It has been a pleasure to teach all the 8JS students over the last two years, and it has been amazing to see them grow academically and as individuals. I wish them all the best for the rest of their time at Cannington Community Education Support Centre.
I hope everyone has a safe and fantastic holiday.

We had an awesome and busy start to term 4. We cannot believe the year is almost over! The first half of this term saw the students working through their IEP goals and finishing off their ASDAN portfolios. The students have done a fantastic job completing sixty hours of work towards their ASDAN Key Steps Module and achieving two certificates this year.
Students are also to be commended for completing all requirements to achieve their Level 4 Certificate in Ignite Award. An award ceremony was held on 17th November at the City of Canning for the years 7 and 8 students to receive their Ignite award and the year 10 students for their Duke of Edinburgh awards. The Mayor handed out the certificates. A special thanks to the parents who made time to attend the function.
On the Monday of Remembrance Day week, students made special poppy flowers during art lessons. They proudly wore them on 11 November and observed a minute’s silence to honour and respect the soldiers who lost their lives in the battle.
Students are enjoying IBO lessons on Wednesday afternoons. This term, some of the IBO options are leather works, basketball, cooking, sensory group, dance, Minecraft, bike riding, Christmas craft, karaoke and cricket. On Wednesday of week 10, students will be finishing off their IBO with an excursion to the Cannington Leisureplex to have some fun in the pool, waterslide and basketball courts. They are all looking forward to it. Thursday of week 10 is the last day of the year for students, and I wish each one of them a well-deserved break.
Have a safe and wonderful holiday!

We have completed some fantastic artwork in Indigenous Studies sessions this term with Mrs Martlew. Our focus was dot painting. We made a serpent after reading the Dreamtime story, The Rainbow Serpent. We then placed them over the Aboriginal flag to display.
We also followed a step by step procedure to complete a turtle. Before drawing and painting, we had to tear the edges of brown cards to look like we were working on bark. We then followed the steps to draw our turtles. Then it was time to paint. Once again, our focus was dot painting. We were encouraged to decorate the shell and surrounding areas with many colours. We think they look very effective.
In week 8, we were lucky enough to have Justin Martin, an Indigenous artist, come into school for an incursion. Check out some of the work completed.
We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break and hope to see everyone bright and bubbly in 2022.

Are we there yet? Almost! It’s unbelievable to think that we are at the end yet again.
A culmination of the year 9 Indigenous Studies program saw the two classes merge for an incursion and meet Djurandi Dreaming’s owner, proud Whadjuk man, Justin Martin. The students were excited to show their Acknowledgement of Country speech and Key Word Sign (KWS) skills as an introduction to our guest, and Justin shared his art skills and knowledge. Students had an opportunity to display their artistic flair, intercultural understandings and respect for cultures; past, present and emerging. Thank you to Mr Martin for supporting our learning experiences with this hands-on event.
This term, the students continued to dedicate themselves to the Peer Support Group (PSG) responsibilities and worked with the 2022 year 7 students during their transition days at our school. Students from both year 9 classes met the new students at the office, guided them to the garden area, and worked in small groups to support positive engagement. It was awesome to see the maturity of our year 9 students working so diligently to provide a safe and happy experience for our newest students.
Our class has been involved in a side project in the PBS video that demonstrates positive behaviours specific to wearing the school uniform and our A.I.R values. Germano and Monique volunteered to help brainstorm ideas, followed by script development and then proposed the ideas to the class. Most students wanted to be part of the video, including some from other classes, and we look forward to seeing the final cut on the big screen soon. Thanks to Justin, our chaplain, and Ms Womersley for their support in this project, and also to the other students who are working on the behind the scenes production.
Here are some 2022 highlights, achievements and reflections:
Amy |
I liked learning the bush dances for camp and helping the year 8 students learn these routines. I liked helping the year 6s when they came to our school. I played games with them. |
Djimon |
I like using the sensory room and can share it with others because it is a shared space. |
Abbie |
I like being a leader and helping other people. I like teaching people things, and I am usually asked to help with ICT skills. I love checking Connect frequently because I find out things before other people. I show my family my work on Connect. I enjoy PSG and have a good friend Hamida in Mr C’s class. We made recycled paper together. These were made into gift tags for Market Day. |
Matthew |
I have a really good friend in my class, Lachlan. He listens to me, and I listen to him. We make each other laugh. I will miss Lachlan during the holidays. I know some Noongar words and can use Key Word Sign (KWS) at the same time. |
Isaac |
Camp was the best because the food was really delicious. I like using my “5 Senses” card in class because it helps me stay in the moment. I liked working towards my Duke of Edinburgh’s Award hours and learning about Prince Philip. |
Germano |
I give my peers compliments when they achieve something because it’s nice to acknowledge their efforts. I have created my signature to use on official forms. I loved learning, teaching and doing the bush dances for camp. |
Lachlan |
I like playing Minecraft and developing camaraderie with Dylan because he is really good at it. We work as a team and help each other. I like learning the Noongar language and learning about “Connection to Country”. I recognise different parts of WA and know their Noongar names. I also enjoyed learning about the Rainbow Serpent with Justin Martin. |
Monique |
I represented CCC at the interschool carnival and had a great time with year 9 girls and staff from mainstream. It felt good when they were cheering me on. I have my grown-up signature now and will use it soon. I like saying An Acknowledgement of Country each week in Indigenous Studies. |
Dylan |
I have developed my signature, and I will use it in real life soon. I liked working with the year 6 students on their transition days. It felt good to help them. Fun Day was ages ago, but I think that it was definitely one of the best parts of 2021. |
Ryan |
I was the first student in my class to achieve the 1,500 Token Target. I chose Marvel Iron Man aftershave as one of my rewards, and I usually wear it to Youth Group on Friday nights. Camp was lots of fun, and I can’t wait for the next one. |
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the regular team in Room 1.5 for their work with the students – Mr Amedi, Ms Dutson, Miss Mincherton and Mrs Reale. Also, we have had Mrs Ajayi as a regular relief member this year, and we thank her. Furthermore, thanks very much to the parents, carers, extended family members and therapists for your support during 2021. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Adieu to you all, and wishing you a safe and happy break.

Year 10 students celebrate at The Pines Restaurant! On Friday 12 November, the year 10 students attended the Pines Restaurant at Bentley TAFE to celebrate their time at the middle school campus. All the students looked amazing and very smart dressing up for the occasion.
We were certainly treated to a feast. Our meal started with Entrée, a choice of prawns, sweet potato and cashew soup, a beetroot tart, and hot crusty rolls. The main course offered salmon, pork tenderloin, and roasted chicken, all accompanied by seasonal vegetables. Just when we thought we could not eat anymore, the dessert trolley was presented. Students could choose chocolate cake, green tea pannacotta or orange cake. After lunch, we gathered in the restaurant courtyard, took many photos, and shared many memories of our time at the middle school campus.
We are getting very excited for our final week as the following events are taking place:
- Final assembly – Tuesday 14 December at 9:15 am
- Optus Stadium visit – Tuesday 14 December at 11:00 am
- Cannington Leisureplex – Wednesday 15 December at 12:00 pm
Congratulations on Graduating from the Edge Course! Congratulations to Nathan Williams and Miracle Fue for completing the ‘Charged Up for Work Certificate’ delivered by Edge Employment Solutions. On Thursdays, the students attended a seven-week employment pathway program that covered a variety of activities and tasks. The course recognises essential attributes needed in a workplace setting and develops skills required for future employment opportunities. Well done, gents!

Our last year 10 cooking class
10W
Our final year of middle school has rushed on by, and here we are, writing the last newsletter for the year.
It has been a hectic term with transition activities and excursions most weeks and finishing up our last programs for the year. Transition activities included an excursion to Shelley Beach, where we tried a variety of new activities, including kayaking, fishing and riding bikes along the river. We attended the senior campus each Friday morning to join Mr van der Westhuizen as he made pancakes for breakfast club.

Transition activities
We recently attended the Pines Restaurant in Bentley, where we celebrated the end of middle school and enjoyed a three-course meal with silver service. All enjoyed the food, and it was an excellent opportunity to practise using our table manners.

Enjoying lunch at the Pines
We have had weekly sessions at the Cannington Leisureplex – doing water-based fitness activities with Mrs Woo – including muscle building with swimming noodles and empty water bottles.

Recreational Pursuits
Market Day at Leeming was a great success, and our table of goodies was the envy of others – we sold all sorts of goods, including timber products made by the senior students, cards, plants, biscuits and jewellery. The items not sold at Market Day were sold at a ‘Mini-Market Day’ stall outside the staffroom for two Fridays – in total, we sold almost $600 worth of products, and we were able to practise our customer service and money counting skills as well.

Leeming Market Day
The coming week is still packed with activities, including a trip to Optus Stadium, followed by a walk over the Matagarup Bridge and a picnic by the river.
I wish all our year 10 students the very best as they begin year 11 and a new chapter of their schooling – it has been a pleasure working with each of them over the last four years, and I look forward to catching up with them when they visit the middle school in 2022

11LG
One of the high points of term 4 in 11LG has been getting to know the year 10 students when they come to the campus each Monday for transition activities. The students have been to the Swan Valley Adventure Centre, Shelley Beach, painted small wooden animals, been given guided tours of the senior campus and participated in cooperative group activities where the aim was to build a solid bridge and to package an egg so that it will not crack when dropped from a great height. All in all, the years 10, 11, 12 and Pathway students have had a lot of fun and developed good friendships as they have all got to know each other better during these transition activities. Another memorable moment this term was when the year 11 classes went to The Groove Train at Carousel for lunch. It was lovely to see the students looking so sophisticated on the day.
Also, the remaining students from years 11 and 12 have been painting an Aboriginal six-season design and three totem poles in the Aboriginal garden at the middle school. We haven’t quite finished yet, but it is looking amazing!

12H
With the year wrapping up and most of the senior students staying at home, 12H has been lucky enough to merge with some other classes for a bit of end of year learning. We have been keeping up with our literacy and numeracy programs in the mornings, and then after recess, we have been working on various projects with different students and teachers.
Congratulations to Jasmine Robinson, who got her Learner’s Permit. Jasmine worked so hard to pass this test. It is good to see all her hard work paying off. Jasmine has just also secured a part-time job in her preferred industry! Well done, Jasmine. You are a star!
Next year 12H will be Pathways, and they will have a new teacher. It has been an absolute pleasure working with each student in this class. I will miss you all! Enjoy your summer holidays. Rest, relax and stay safe! I am on leave next year and plan to return in 2023.
Stephanie Hriskin
Pathways H
Even though it is late into term 4, it has been great to see our PathwayH team still wanting to stay back and finish the year strong. The second half of the term saw our students attend Shelley Beach as part of our year 10 transition program. It was a delightful day as our students did some fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, bike and scooter riding.
Shelley Beach kayaking
Through the Employment Buddy Program, Jason Cole visited Aqualife in Victoria Park and learnt how staff clean and maintain the aquatics facilities in the centre.

Jason at Aqualife
Good luck to Zahrion Nelson, Cheyenne Newton, Zac Bonnefin, Wade Robinson, Courtney Duckworth, Jason Cole, Joseph Martin and Jack Dellaway. It has been a delight teaching you over the past few years, hoping you all enjoy the next chapter. My final tip is “never stop learning and believing”.
To my wonderful staff Tracey Dann, Louise Newman and Hans Den-otter, thank you for going above and beyond in assisting our students and making my day more enjoyable.

Design and Technology
Year 7 Woodwork: Students have completed Fred’s Wagon. This project introduced the use of a wood chisel to create a dado joint. The last project for term 4 is called Brad’s Game. Students use their hand and eye coordination to guide steel balls into holes in the base. It is a race against time to complete these projects before the term ends.

Year 8 Woodwork: Students are making a model steam locomotive. This project introduces students to the wood lathe, which is used to turn a round boiler from a square piece of timber. Students use a range of chisels to reshape the square piece of timber into the loco boiler shape. A wire is applied to the spinning timber to burn a series of decorative rings into the wood.

Year 9 Woodwork: Students have been building wooden Monster trucks. These models have big wooden wheels produced using a drill press combined with a hole saw and a Forstner bit. The wheels take a lot of work to sand smooth. This model requires students to use various hand tools and sanding machines to shape the cabin and bonnet. The side panel wheel arches are cut out using a jigsaw. The skills involved in making this model apply to many other tasks that students may tackle in the future. Hugh has been making a wooden model road grader for the past few weeks. It was great to assemble all the different parts and see the project complete in time for the end of term.
A finished Monster truck
Year 10 Woodwork: Students are making a version of the Connect 4 game using two different coloured recycled plastic drink container lids as tokens. This project requires students to do a lot of accurate measuring and cutting, so the tokens fall nicely down each slot. The year 10 classes are so busy that it has been hard to maintain steady progress at this time of year. Both classes should complete their projects and take them home by the end of the term. Some students have been working in the workshop on Fridays. They have had the opportunity to design a personal project and make it. Reece used acrylic sheeting to make a mobile phone holder for his bedroom. Henry and Miracle tried their hands at making copies of a logo and the Aboriginal Flag.

Year 10 Enterprise: Students participated in a wooden transport pallet recycling project. They have dismantled and denailed the pallets and made some projects from the reclaimed timber. The first project to be completed was wooden carry trays. These were sent to Market Day and experienced strong sales due to their rustic appearance. Students are using timber from the same pallets to make small bird nesting boxes which will be on sale next Market Day. Students have also processed and recycled HDPE plastic drink container lids into colourful Christmas decorations. They sort the plastic lids into types and then prepare the HDPE lids for recycling. Students always marvel at the last step of the process, which uses a heat gun to produce a glossy shine on the finished decoration.
Carry tray and nesting box made from old pallets
Year 10 DFES Cadets: Students have spent the last weeks of this term consolidating their learning by planning a weekend trip away. They have used the internet to research a destination and its facilities. As part of the planning process, students have chosen a time of year to research relevant fire bans and hazards that might apply, such as extremely hot weather. Google Maps has been used to calculate the distance from home. Students have had to plan a menu and create a shopping list. The final part of the project has been creating equipment and clothing lists for their weekend away.
IBO - Leatherwork: Students have been enjoying leatherwork this semester. We have had professional assistance from Bailey, an education assistant at our school. He taught us the saddle stitch and introduced students to new projects such as leather can holders and mobile phone pouches. Winston received a pocket knife for his birthday this year. He has made a leather pouch that goes on his belt to store his new knife. Our students use three-tonne capacity arbour presses to stamp and punch their leather projects. The presses provide a mechanical advantage to students and make it possible for all students to participate in the leatherworking process.

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone! 2022 is just around the corner. As I reflect on the past year, I can say I’m very proud to be part of such a caring and diverse team. We use our strengths to meet the needs of the students from many perspectives. Some highlights for me this year have been time away at camps, lunchtime activities, spending time with the year 10 recreational pursuits class and hanging with the students in the garden.
I’ve had the privilege of coordinating the Breakfast Club and supplying yummy food thanks to our ties with Foodbank, local churches, and school budgets. The school breakfast program encourages all students to feel welcomed and valued whilst enjoying a piece of toast and a Milo and, if lucky, a pancake. The atmosphere at breakfast is always very warm and welcoming, thanks to our volunteers and education assistants. This year we served a total of 3,500 breakfasts to our students. Many thanks to all who have been involved. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year! I hope it is a long and prosperous holiday season for you.

Office Information
Payments
Thank you to everyone who has paid their contributions—just a reminder, you can pay your contributions by EFTPOS, direct debit, or payment plan. Please contact the office to arrange a payment plan. All charges for years 11 and 12 students are compulsory. If charges are not paid, the school cannot subside your child’s excursions. Our bank details are BSB 066 040 A/C 1990 6619 (when using online banking, please remember to state your child’s name in the details box; otherwise, we cannot identify the relevant student).
Please note our new bank account details: BSB 066-040 Account Number 1990 6619 (Commonwealth Bank of Australia).
Middle School Parking
Please note that parking is not permitted in the driveway at the school’s entrance as indicated by the ‘no stopping’ markers and yellow line, as this causes a traffic jam on Wharf Street and is dangerous for students. Your cooperation would be appreciated. Parents are welcome to park down the side of the school near the bus bays. Parents picking up children from the bus bays need to arrive early before the buses.
Visiting the School
All visitors must sign in at Reception/Business Centre and receive a yellow visitor label.
