From the Principal’s Desk

Welcome to term 3. It is so nice getting out in the sunshine after what seemed to be a wet winter. July was wet, but the rest of winter is, in fact, below average. July was globally the hottest month ever. Our school garden is looking great, and we are all hoping the weather is kind to us for the middle school camp and upcoming athletics carnivals.

Speaking of athletics carnivals, how great have the Olympics been. Australia did incredibly well, and a new era of heroes was created. Our middle school carnival and the ESSN athletics carnivals will occur during the last fortnight of school, and we will see our own heroes having a go and trying their best.

We will be using Consent 2 Go for getting permission for these two events. Thanks to all the parents and caregivers who have updated their information. We need everyone on board as soon as possible. If you have any problems or questions, please ring the relevant school office, and you will be assisted. Don’t forget the user guide video is on our website under school information on the parents’ tab on top of the screen.

The School Board has been busy looking at our school business plan progress. They have also authorised the Annual Report and have undertaken training to fulfil their roles. The Board is also keen to work with the P&C and staff to form a committee to plan celebrations because, in 2022, we will be 21 years young. If you have any ideas or would like to help out, please give the office a call. We will be drawing upon school alumni and past staff for their involvement.

The School Board also authorised creating a school Connect community space to supplement our class connect pages and other communication channels. I hope you also find the Board Chair’s newsletter article of use. We are all working together to make our great school the best it can be.

The Government is now calling upon everyone over 16 or over 12 in the case of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to get their Covid vaccine. Vaccination bookings are essential and can be made by visiting Roll Up for WA. I hope everyone gets their vaccines as soon as possible so we can work our way out of this pandemic. The school has been working hard to develop our remote learning plan, something we sincerely hope we will not have to use. Given the new variant, we will be doubtful to be doing any package drop-offs, but we will be utilising Microsoft Teams and other online learning programs via Connect.

I would like to acknowledge Mr Hussein, Mr den–Otter, Mr Arrantash, Mr Van der Westhuizen, Ms Hriskin and Mrs Woo for making our senior school DFES camp such a success. The students worked well as a team and engaged in several outdoor education assessments. I heard the pancakes for breakfast were well received. Our middle school camp is coming up next week. Mr Arrantash and Mrs Whelan have done a tremendous amount of work getting the camp organised. I will be helping out myself in the evening and look forward to sharing a dorm with my teammates. Again I would like to acknowledge the number of staff going on the camp performing all these extra duties. Camps are voluntary, and staff do not have to attend.

Mrs Perera, our school psychologist, is leaving us in a month to take up another position. We are working towards getting another psychologist to do the role. The position is funded centrally, but we also purchased additional time to assist our families. We are currently down two days of school nurse time as there is a shortage of nurses available, and some school staff are helping out with the vaccination program for Covid. We will keep you updated.

7M

It’s been a pleasure to see everyone back in the classroom, refreshed and ready to get stuck into term 3. 7M students enjoyed being reunited with their friends and sharing stories from their holiday break. Our routine is back in full swing, and excitement is starting to build as we anticipate our school camp at Point Peron.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve enjoyed catching up with parents for our IEP meetings. Your input and support have been invaluable for the preparation of semester 2 learning goals. I’d like to thank our parents for taking time from their busy schedules to come in and see me and for returning documentation for camp.

Some interesting topics/subjects we’re learning about this term include; cooking (Mrs Armstrong), PATHS (Ms Woon), cyber safety (Mr Panton), world geography (HASS) and natural disasters (science). We’ve had a keen eye on the Olympic games, watched some events and learned about why we have the Olympic games and how they are unique. Students continue to work hard on their daily literacy and numeracy programs. Students enjoy using the Jungle Time app, learning measurement concepts, and practising our times tables in numeracy. In literacy, we have been building our comprehension skills through our reading box cards and Literacy Planet. It’s pleasing to see enthusiasm for reading in our class, and we are developing some great reading habits for the future.

We look forward to some exciting events later this term, including; our camp at Point Peron, ESSN carnival in week 9 and our middle school athletics carnival in week 10, to name a few. I encourage all parents to keep updated via our class Connect page (7M), school website, and Facebook page. I would like to wish our parents and students good health and a productive term ahead.

We have started term 3 as we left the last term, working hard on our literacy and numeracy skills. We have also been working on our art and woodwork skills with Mr Arrantash and Ms Goodin. On Fridays, we have started to focus on our road safety and mapping skills utilising Google Maps.

We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead with camp, the ESSN and middle school athletic carnivals happening soon.

We have had a fantastic start to this term with students returning after holidays with a positive and mature attitude. They had fun during holidays and have returned with wonderful stories to share with their peers. A few of them even caught up with their friends in class and were happy to share the fun they had together.

This term in Literacy and HASS, we have been focussing on the Tokyo Olympics. We watched some of the Olympic Games live in the classroom and read through the West Australian newspaper to complete activities in our Olympics workbook. As part of this task, we have done a lot of research to learn and understand the history of the Olympics, information about the athletes and the country they represent, the design of the Olympic medal, etc. We were all keen on following the Australian athlete Peter Bol when we learned that he was a student from a neighbouring high school.

Olympics activity

In health, we continue to learn about feelings and emotions in PATHS and recollect the names of different body parts with Ms Woon. This activity was enjoyable as we worked in small groups and drew a life-size outline of the body on Butchers’ paper, and worked as a team to label different parts.

Labelling body parts

In art, we continue with projects linked to the book “Year of the Boar” that we are reading in Literacy. The last project we completed is a dragon which we have proudly displayed in our classroom.

School camp is fast approaching, and there is not one day when we do not discuss camp. We are all getting ready and organised for it. Some of us have already started packing our bags, while some are shopping around to buy a few necessary items. Ryan had the opportunity to pay an early visit to the camp during week 3. He brought us back some wonderful pictures of the campsite, including the dormitory with bunk beds, dining hall, basketball court etc. We have started counting down the days on our class calendar.

Thank you to all the parents for making time for IEP meetings this term. The turnout and response were excellent. This term is jam-packed as we have camp in week 6, followed by two athletic carnivals. We are also hosting the assembly with the year 7 students on the last Monday of the term.

The Class of 8SS

9M

This term is moving along very quickly. There is the added excitement as camp approaches. Whether overnighting it or a day camper, the anticipation of all the planned fun activities begins to boil over. We are so excited.

Because of the two-week holiday break, we decided to re-start our novel ‘Bridge to Terabitha’. We were only two chapters in and forgot some of the facts, so we made a class decision to re-start it this term.

PSG is going well. We have been focusing on bush dancing for camp. The years 9 and 7 students are becoming very competent dancers. However, we also have fierce competition from year 8. They were fabulous dancers when they learnt the dances during an IBO session.

I asked the students to let us know something new they had learnt, a fun fact and something fun they had done. Here is some of what they shared:

Jaimie

Learnt (Health): That we all go through puberty just at different times.

Winston

Learnt (Indigenous Studies): That Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin is Indigenous. Also, the tools Indigenous people use are really cool.

Khalid

Fact (Health): There are three changes in puberty – physical, social and emotional changes.

Jayden

Fact (Art): Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, and it’s a very small portrait.

Dylan

Fact (Indigenous Studies): Ash Barty, the tennis player, has Indigenous heritage.

Jessica

Fun (Woodwork): Making a plane in woodwork.

Omar

Fun (Wellbeing): I like doing Smiling Mind after lunch every day.

Daelen

Learnt (Health): Our bodies go through so many physical changes during puberty.

Sheree

Learnt/Fun (Phys. Ed): I have learnt the ‘Heel and Toe’ Polka, which has been a lot of fun. I especially like the clapping on my knees and hands.

Sarah

Fun (IBO): I’m really enjoying sensory adventures. I loved making a pasta necklace.

Students have been busy preparing for camp in numerous ways, namely reviewing lists such as expectations and luggage requirements for literacy, and completing virtual shopping trips during numeracy sessions. Missing out on camp last year was a shame, and students are extra excited now. It will be a highlight of their year.

Learning modified dance routines to prepare for the Mucky Duck Bush Band at camp has been a main focus. During sport sessions, year 9 students work together to learn three new dances. Also, on Fridays during Peer Support Group, the year 9s help the year 7s with these dance routines. It will be fantastic to see it come together as a whole school when we perform at camp.

Germano, Abbey and Amy practising their dance

Peer Support Group (PSG) continues to grow, and this term, our class has been invited to Cloverdale Education Support Centre to help the years 5 and 6 students prepare for secondary schooling at CCESC in the future. We recently welcomed the Cloverdale students to our classroom for their transition, and some year 9 students assisted with the school tour. These opportunities are paramount for the students to develop their leadership skills and help their peers feel safe and happy. Students have been using Connect to write recounts about Life at CCESC and posting videos that show different parts of our school. They will share this information with the Cloverdale students. Parents and carers can look at the fantastic pieces of work in the “Discussion” section of Connect.

Students are progressing in their Indigenous Studies learning outcomes and are extending their Noongar vocabulary and learning An Acknowledgement of Country in Noongar with Key Word Sign (KWS). Furthermore, we have introduced a "Hands-on Country" ceremony to our weekly lessons, and students are feeling the symbolism of red earth and the importance of land ("boodja") to Indigenous cultures.

10J

10J has been busy taking part in the ASDAN Workright program. The program encourages students to learn vital skills that will assist in future Workplace learning placements. Our students are attending GSI – Containers for Change and HDstreetwise.

We are very grateful that these industries are helping our students gain such valuable experience.

We have now begun identifying students who are ready to participate in the Workplace Learning Program (WPL) and will have the opportunity to spend over half a day at an allocated workplace.

The students are enjoying the Food Science course this term. We have been making a selection of different soups, which has been fantastic to enjoy during this winter’s cold weather. The students take part in both theory and practical lessons, making an array of different meals. It is a valuable experience as they learn the origins of food and the different food groups essential for a balanced diet. The program also allows them to follow a given recipe and measure out different ingredients.

Enjoying Food Science

As part of the Community Service program, students were invited by SERCUL to participate in the National Tree Planting Day. 10J joined 10W to plant 850 tube stock native trees at Bannister Creek in Lynwood. All students were given gloves and a trough and were directed to a particular area. Brian from SERCUL had already dug over 800 small holes for a variety of shrubs to be planted.

It was a fantastic experience to watch the students plant so many trees that will grow and become part of the Bannister Creek reserve. A big thank you to all the year 10 students who worked hard as a team to ensure all the planting was finished in time.

This term has begun with a flurry of activities – we have officially started our Workright placement at the Cannington Community Garden. This has been an excellent opportunity for students to practise following instructions from other adults. We have constructed a ‘lasagne garden bed’ with mulch and grass clippings and sawdust layers. We have painted terracotta pots to brighten the garden and watched trucks arriving to tip woodchips out for use in the garden.

In Recreational Pursuits, we have been learning the basic techniques for driving and putting in golf, including holding the clubs correctly and improving our aim. Later in the term, we will attend Whale Back Golf Course driving range to practise our skills further.

Practising our golf

Recently we participated in the National Tree Planting day in collaboration with SERCUL. We rode on the school bus to Bannister Creek in Lynnwood and planted 850 tube stock native trees along the side of the creek. This is the 4th year that the year 10 students have been involved in this program at some level, and it was exciting to see the progress our plants have made from previous years. The SERCUL representative was very impressed with our efficiency and behaviour and commended our students for their efforts.

The class is starting to get very excited about camp. We have been researching Point Peron Camp School, and earlier in week 3, some of the students did a pre-camp visit to familiarise themselves with the camp's layout. They returned to school very excited and enthusiastic about all that camp holds for them.

This term, we are back looking after the plant hire plants as part of our Business Management and Enterprise project this year. The plants are looking very healthy and happy after a spell in the shade house over the holidays.

This semester, in Literacy and Numeracy, we have been blessed to have Ms Woon and Mr Arrantash join us as support teachers. They spend time with a small group of students and provide extra support and skills based on spelling, time, and money. The students involved in this program are finding the sessions beneficial and are producing some great work!

ITP meetings have been progressing nicely, and it has been great to catch up with parents and other stakeholders through this process as we set new goals for each student. Thank you to each of you who has made the time to come in and plan for your child this semester. I know that many of you are time-poor, and this commitment to your child impacts that. I appreciate your dedication.

I am looking forward to what the rest of the term has in store for our class. We will continue to be busy right up to the very end of the term, so I encourage each of you to access the information on the 10W Connect page, as well as check the information in your child’s class on Connect.

11LG

Term 3 has commenced with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm in the 11LG class. Many students have commenced new work placements, new Individual Transition Plan (ITP) goals, and new Monday afternoon physical education activities focusing on individual sports. In July, many students with their families/caregivers attended the Post School Options afternoon, which CCESC hosted in the Rec Room at the Middle School Campus. This event allowed students and their stakeholders to explore service providers that can assist them in making choices about alternative, supported and open employment and therapy services that promote independent living skills now and into the future. Another exciting activity the students have participated in is learning to tie-dye tee shirts in preparation for the next Market Day.

News from the 11LG students about term 3:

Aaliyah

The tie-dyeing tee shirts activity was really fun.

Daniel

I liked making the tie-dye tee shirts for Market Day, and the shirts are really cool.

Bree

I liked doing the tie-dying activity; it was interesting that the tie-dye designs still have a lot of white on them.

Ashley

I liked doing the tie-dying activity, the colours look amazing.

Charlotte

I tie-dyed a baby’s tee shirt for Market Day; I like the way it turned out.

Reece

I like doing my science course with other people; I have a new science teacher this term.

11G

The countdown is on! The students in 11G have great delight every morning working out how many school days there are left until the school holidays!

We have had some amazing helpers in the class each week, with every student getting the chance to do special jobs for staff. Answering the class phone has proven challenging for some; however, everyone is doing a fantastic job!

In English and HPE, we have been focusing on Emotional Well-being. We are looking at Mindfulness and Positive Thinking. All students have been practising making positive comments, giving compliments, and asking each other questions. We have been taking regular breaks during class time to practice our stretches and clear our minds.

Our ITP meetings were very successful, with students thinking very hard about their goals for this semester. We are looking forward to Transition starting in week 7, when the year 10 students will join our classroom for a session.

Our four Workright students have been working hard every Thursday at the Victoria Park Bowling Club. We have cleared the rose gardens of all weeds, pruned, raked, planted new plants and taken down the shade sails on the greens.

We are learning to work as a team by helping our fellow workers out. We have been fortunate with the weather so far this term and have only been rained on once – lucky we have some heavy-duty raincoats!

Cindi Griffin

12H

Things have been chugging along smoothly in 12H this term. We have had some ‘men down’ due to illness, but thankfully, everyone has recovered quickly and returned to school ready to work! A major highlight of the past four weeks would have to be our podcast. The students put together their scripts and read them so smoothly after only a couple of practices. We were very impressed!

We have held our ITP meetings with students, parents, school staff and other stakeholders. It is wonderful to see how the students are now more sure of their goals and what they want to focus on. With the end of year 12 approaching fast for some, we are excited to move forward and assist everyone in the class to achieve their goals this semester.

English – We have been learning how to: express and interpret feelings, listen and speak in a variety of contexts, learn social expectations regarding communication behaviours, develop strategies for recording ideas and information and to edit communications with support.

ASDAN – We worked as a class to create a podcast about social media usage at our school after conducting interviews last term. We are now working on an infographic about ground rules for using social media.

Kayleb contributing to the group infographic on social media

Ground rules for social media brainstorm

Maths – We finished up our units of work on budgeting and have moved on to learning about chance and data. We are building vocabulary and describing possible outcomes of daily events.

HPE – We are learning where to obtain reliable health information and who to ask if we have questions about a health problem.

DFES – We have been learning about the fire triangle, different types of fuels, breaking the fire triangle, radiant heat and how to create an escape plan for our homes. We have also been preparing for camp.

Food Science

This term, the students worked together to select a theme and plan and prepare a celebration meal in food science. What were we celebrating? We can’t even remember. The group chose a Mexican Fiesta as their theme. They then researched entrée, main and dessert recipes, wrote shopping lists and assigned roles for the following week when they prepared the food. They made decorations, and we surprised them with a piñata. The entrée was Homemade Zesty Guacamole with corn chips, the main was Mexican Meatball Subs, and the dessert was the famous Tres Leches cake. It is brilliant to see the students becoming more confident in the kitchen.

Pathways G

We have had a busy start to the term, including some students participating in ITP interviews. The interviews were held at school, and it was pleasing to see students setting their final goals and personal challenges before leaving school.

We have had some exciting news with Hugo and Zidane completing their traineeships at the Post Office. This is a great achievement as it is not easy to complete school-based traineeships as they present many challenges at work and school.

Holleigh has gathered all of her necessary ID and has gained her learner’s permit. We wish her all the best as she starts learning how to drive and begins lessons.

Ryan has started travel training with Mrs Woo. He is doing a good job and should be ready for independent travel soon. He is gathering enough ID to ensure he is fully prepared to leave school at the end of the year.

Several students will be attending the DFES camp, and it was great to see some of our students getting excited about the camp and arranging with their employers to take time off to attend. Some students have set up tents in preparation for the camp and have attended a couple of meetings to ensure they are organised during school.

Pathways H

The students have been busy balancing school work and attending various work placements.

During ASDAN, the students created a survey using Microsoft Forms to determine how many of their peers eat fruit and vegetables each day. They then used the data and created a pie graph. They have also completed their ASDAN summary statements by reflecting on their work.

Although NAIDOC Week was postponed a few times this year, our students finally had the opportunity to participate in the event. They enjoyed dot painting, scratching art, decorating fridge magnets and eating damper.

Students took part in some circuit, cardio and strengthening exercises during Rec Pursuits. Although it took some time for them to adjust to the new program, they seemed to enjoy themselves by giving it a go, getting out of their comfort zone and having plenty of laughs.

Exercising during Recreational Pursuits

The senior students are gearing up for the upcoming DFES Cadets camp. They have assembled tents, checked that equipment works effectively, and listed items we need to take with us.

Well done to Zahrion Nelson for winning the WPL Award for week 2. Great work, young man!

Workplace Learning

The cold, wet weather is continuing to lash Perth! It is important for students to be prepared for cold/wet weather, particularly on their workplace learning days. Even if the placement is working inside, they need to have wet weather gear to protect themselves when travelling to and from the placement.

We have had a huge term with three of our senior students, Nic Fuller, Hugo Hendrawan and Zidane Hartono, completing Certificate II in Logistics. This was done with the help of Australia Post providing a workplace, and all three boys worked in different departments. With the help of EDGE Employment Solutions and Mr Griffin, they completed the written section of the Certificate at school. Since completing the Certificate, the boys have either applied for a continuing position and are waiting for the reply or have started working for Australia Post as an employee. Congratulations to you all.

Joseph Martin has impressed his employer, who asked that he start a work trial with Alinea. He has been working hard to prove he can travel and work independently. Well done, Joseph.

We are a little sad to be so close to the end of the school year for the Pathway students. We would like to thank you for your commitment to the workplace learning program and wish you luck in your new life after school.

Carollyn Pears and Vera Edwards

Positive Behaviour Support

Thanks to all staff who have kept a sharp lookout for good and respectful behaviour in our students.

Towards the end of term 2, CCESC held its assembly during which we spun our chocolate wheel and allowed all students who had won A.I.R tokens a shot at winning a prize. The students who won the draw were Cheyanne, who won a Coles/Myer gift card and Mandy, who won movie tickets. Congratulations to both girls. We hope you enjoyed spending your prizes during the holiday period.

In other news, we had a “School-wide Evaluation” of PBS at our school, and it was great to see that most of our students understand the PBS expectations. The PBS team would love to encourage all students to continue to strive to do all things positive. Remember, your educators will be looking to catch you completing Achievement, Independence and Respect.

Enjoy your term 3.

Middle School Camp

Preparations are well underway for this year’s middle school camp. We are all hoping that WA will keep COVID at bay so the camp can go ahead. The Point Peron site has a great deal to offer our students. Mr Sands and Mr Mitchell will be running our school’s version of the Olympics, including tug of war, tyre rolling, blind trail, scooter riding, a commando course, and to top it all off, a bouncy castle slide!

Full camp students will visit the Rockingham Regional Environmental Centre to view an aquarium that contains fish species from the surrounding ocean. They will also be offered the opportunity to view and handle reptiles.

During camp this year, we plan to take the students down to the beach and conduct Cannington’s biggest sand castle competition. Some great prizes can be won.

On Tuesday evening after tea, the Mucky Duck Bush Band is coming to camp. Students will dance and sing the night away against the background of a warm campfire. Ms Spadanuda and Mrs Martlew have been teaching our students bush dances in the lead up to camp. We are asking students and staff to prepare a costume for this evening event. The theme is the ‘Australian Outback’. It has been great to watch students brainstorming with staff to identify some easy costumes for this event. Lachlan from year 9 is planning to dress up as a redback spider! What a great idea! We have chosen an Australian ‘Outback theme’ to compliment the entertainment and make choosing a costume inexpensive and easy to prepare. Please help your student put a costume together so they can be part of the fun!

If you would like any information relating to camp, please get in touch with us at school.

NAIDOC Celebration - Heal Country!

Kaya everyone! During week 2 of this term, the senior students were lucky enough to finally participate in our NAIDOC week activities. Students from years 11-13 enjoyed an indigenous performance by local artists and fellow Sevenoaks students and art and craft activities and food tasting opportunities. Thank you to all those students and staff who helped out and participated on the day, making it such a positive educational experience.

A Word from the School Psychologist

Hi everyone, welcome back!

This month we’re looking at kindness. So much is going on, and it can direct us to focus on ourselves, often forgetting that happiness can come from caring for others. This month we’re looking at engaging in one kind act per day.

Please find the link to the calendar so you can print it out.

In today’s society browsing the internet is an everyday occurrence that we do many times a day. This presents several unknowns and safety concerns for parents that can arise when their children are browsing the internet for the first time.

I thought I would take the opportunity to share a couple of helpful resources from the Australian Government eSafety Commission for both parents and children that can be used to help everyone stay safe on the internet. The kids’ portal has interactive information and comics they can follow through and learn simultaneously.

A Message from the Community Health Nurse

Dental health – keep your teeth healthy

Teeth are important possessions. Here are some tips for keeping them healthy.

  • Clean teeth, gums and tongue at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush.
  • Adults and children should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Toothpaste should be spat out after brushing and never eaten or swallowed. Do not rinse your mouth out with water after brushing your teeth.
  • Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after brushing and store it hygienically.
  • Replace your toothbrush regularly.
  • Older children and adults should floss their teeth daily.
  • Eating and drinking healthily are essential for keeping your teeth healthy – try to keep away from too much sugar, especially between meals.

For more dental health information, go to the link below or visit the link below. School Board Corner

The following is an update from our recent School Board meeting:

Consent2Go is a great new app the school is using to help us parents give permissions for excursions. As a parent with a child that always loses those notes, it's such a relief. All parents and carers were sent an email to update their student’s personal information, and this information needs to be checked and returned. If you haven't sorted it yet, give it a go, and if you need help, there is a great tutorial: attach link.

The school will be celebrating its 21st anniversary next year, and planning has already begun. We would love to have your and your child’s ideas and suggestions for the celebrations. We would love to see things that showcase and celebrate what our present and past students have achieved.

Send through your ideas to cannington.esc@education.wa.edu.au

The school will be organising some parents/carers workshops next term. The School Board has made suggestions around Consent2Go and therapy provision in schools for both therapists and parents. The school hosted their annual Post School Options afternoon tea during week 2 this term, which had a very successful turnout.

If you would like to learn more about the School Board and how it works, you can request the minutes and documents by emailing us.

Thank you to everyone who has paid their contributions—just a reminder, you can pay your contributions by EFTPOS, direct debit, or payment plan. Please contact the office to arrange a payment plan. All charges for years 11 and 12 students are compulsory. If charges are not paid, the school cannot subside your child’s excursions. Our bank details are BSB 016 270 A/C 340822406 (when using online banking, please remember to state your child’s name in the details box; otherwise, we cannot identify the relevant student).

Middle School Parking

Please note that parking is not permitted in the driveway at the school’s entrance as indicated by the ‘no stopping’ markers and yellow line, as this causes a traffic jam on Wharf Street and is dangerous for students. Your cooperation would be appreciated. Parents are welcome to park down the side of the school near the bus bays. Parents picking up children from the bus bays need to get in early before the buses arrive.
