From the Principal’s Desk
The end of another school year and in fact the end of a decade. It is always extremely busy for admin staff at this time of the year, staffing and budgeting for the 2020 school year. I have enjoyed reading every students report and it is great to see all the progress being made by students throughout the semester. As a school we really do offer a very diverse and rich curriculum and the staff have worked very hard getting the best out of the students. Well done staff and students.
Our final end of year assembly hosted by the year 7 classes was well attended by our parents. We recognised our year 10 students journey to the senior campus next year- they all looked so cute in their year seven photos. The Music Rocks groups also performed a trio of songs which were very well received. The students are so brave and they certainly have improved so much. We were also presented with some certificates and cheques from the City of Canning art awards. Well done to Mrs Thomas for her work getting all the artworks ready. Next year we are going to submit more entries in more areas. Congrats to all the award winners and we hope the hamper winners enjoy the produce.
We welcome Mrs Jenny Fuller from Edge Employment Solutions and Mrs Claudia Barbargello a new parent representative to our School Board. They both kindly took up “our offer” and we look forward to working with them next year.
The middle school camp was a great success. Significant modifications to the camp schedule were made in light of the weather conditions at very short notice. The kids went to the movies one day and an indoor pool the other. We even took air con units with us to relieve night time heat. The posts on Instagram of the disco and the colour run were fantastic. Huge acknowledgement to Mrs Janes and the team for organising and running the camp. Plans are already underway for next year’s middle school camp. The senior students camp is planned for Busselton early next year.
We farewell a number of staff this year. Mr Towie, Miss Goodin and Mr Smith have finished their contracts and we wish them success securing employment elsewhere. Mrs Swanson and Mrs Bennett have both retired after long careers assisting students with special needs- we will miss them both. Last but not least our chaplain, Mr Edgar Reyes has accepted a position in New South Wales and we thank him for all he did for our community.
Mrs Pat Spadanuda joins our teaching team in Year 8. Welcome to Pat who was merit selected to the position at our school.
We end the school year with some strong progress being made against our business plan targets. Next year we will be looking to incorporate the new DOE “Building on strength” strategic directions for 2020-2024. These documents are available on our school website.
On behalf of our school board and staff I would like to pass on our best wishes to our families for the festive season and holiday break. Let’s have some fun, relax and recharge for the new year ahead.

Ignite and Duke of Edinburgh Awards
On Tuesday 10 December many students from Years 7 and 8 were presented with their Ignite Awards by the Mayor of the City of Canning, Patrick Hall. He also presented The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Bronze) to numerous year 10 and 11 students. The ceremony was hosted at the City of Canning in Cannington and was a wonderful time to celebrate the achievement of our students. To complete each Award, the students have participated in community service, physical recreation, learnt a new skill and taken part in adventurous journeys.

7MTT
Farewell 2019!! We have had a fantastic year in 7MTT. We have worked very hard and are all looking forward to a well-deserved break.
We have visited some more interesting places. Mr Towie has been teaching us about the planets. To conclude our lessons, we went to Scitech and the Planetarium. We found this very fascinating. We also spent a morning out at Optus Stadium’s Sensory Playground. Some of us were even more adventurous and walked across the Madigarup Bridge and back.
In class we are finishing up the last of our novels for the year, Prince Caspian from The Chronicles of Narnia. We are looking forward to watching the movie next week. We are also very excited to receive our PBS reward next week. Mrs Martlew made us research on the Kmart website what we would like. She gave us a budget that we had to stick to and we each wrote out a shopping list. We are at bursting point waiting to see them in the final week of school.
We have continued learning about feelings and emotions during PATHS sessions. Guilt and jealousy have been the focal points. Most of us has been able to recall a time when guilt and jealousy have played a part in our lives.
We are all now breathing a huge sigh of relief as all of our ASDAN Stepping Stones portfolios were passed during external moderation. With the help and expertise of Mrs Henderson and Mrs Heynen, we never really had any doubt.
It is our turn to lead the final assembly on Monday. We are practising reading and memorising our lines, as well as a little surprise. We things will run smoothly on the day.
Camp has been and gone and we are back at school for a rest. The hot weather did not deter us and we managed to keep cool with lots of activities that were either water based or indoor with air-conditioning. Those students that attended were remarkable and displayed the great maturity they have developed over the course of the year.
Have a safe and Merry Christmas and New Year. We look forward to working as a team next year.

7ST
It has arrived way quicker than we expected, the end of the first year. The students in 7ST have been super busy.
Awards ceremonies, school camp, excursions, travel training and ASDAN completion to name a few.
To sum up the final term for the year we thought the students should have their say.
The question was, “What was your favourite moment from your first year at Cannington Community Education Support Centre?”
Monique – “My favourite parts of the year were Optus Stadium playground visit, dancing on Friday afternoons, visiting IGA and relaxing during daily mindfulness.”
Isaac – “I liked sports with Mr Towie and looking after the chickens.”
Daelen – “I think that the Adventure World and Optus Stadium excursions were my best times.”
Dylan – “The best part was playing basketball on Fridays with Mr Cyriac and Daelen and Jaxon
Germano – “I liked dancing like Mr Bean at the Camp Kerem Disco.”
Matthew – “I liked the Friday afternoon music and dancing sessions.”
Abbie – “The best was the Outback Splash on camp and the playground at Optus Stadium.”
Amy – “I liked it when Ms Dutson made me laugh and Christmas time.”
Djimon – “Adventure World!”
Ryan – “Adventure world was the best”
Lachlan – “I especially liked the computer labs, coding and iPad time. I also liked to see the concrete pump working during morning walks. Oh, and seeing Mr Graeme’s Triumph Stag”
These answers were all in their own words and gives a great recount of the special times that we have enjoyed throughout the entire year.

2019 has come to an end so quick and so has our school year. It has been a wonderful year for all of us in 8S. As we look back at the photographs taken at the start of the year, we are amazed to see how tall we have all grown. Not only have we grown physically but we have also matured into young responsible adults ready for Year 9. We have lots of wonderful memories to cherish as we move on to next year. The highlight of this term was Camp Karem. Though the weather wasn’t favourable, it didn’t stop us from pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone and enjoying every moment we spent there. Some of the camp highlights are the colour run, outback splash, movies, swimming and delicious food. Another important event this term was the Ignite Award Ceremony. On Tuesday the 10th of December we walked over to the Canning Council and received our Ignite Award Level 4 Certificate from the Mayor of Canning. This was a proud moment for all of us as it reflected the hard work we put in throughout the year to complete the steps to achieve this award.
The staff in the classroom are extremely proud of all the students for their tremendous effort and hard work. Have a safe and wonderful holiday and wishing you all a very Happy New Year.

This term has been very busy. We have spent lots of time in the garden on Wednesdays with Mrs Gale. Earlier in the term we planted and now we are beginning to harvest the following:
- Sweet corn
- Pumpkins
- Tomatoes
- Beans
- Peas
- Cucumber
- Zucchini
- Egg plant
- Carrots
- Capsicums
We have had our second vaccination and because we were so brave, Mrs Whelan gave us an Icy Pole as a reward when we got back to our classroom.
In woodwork, we have made wooden Co2 dragster cars and raced them on the special track – Isaac’s car was the fastest, followed by Oliver’s.
In Science we have been using Borax to make decorations with pipe cleaners that form crystal on them over time. These can be hung on a Christmas tree or just in a window because they look so pretty. Keeping in the theme of decorations, we have also made candle holders out of Moccona coffee jar lids – we spray painted them with white and then with marble effects paint. They will make great gifts for our parents.
Last week most of us attended camp – it was hot but we had fun anyway! Our favourite activities were:
- Colour Wars
- Outback Splash
- Movie Night
- Disco
- HBF Arena with its whirlpool!
On Tuesday of week 9, we walked down to the City of Canning to receive our Ignite Award Certificates and Pins from the Mayor. They morning tea was very nice.
We are going to be happy for the holidays to come soon, but it is also going to be sad to say goodbye to Mrs Bennett who is retiring, and Mrs Gale who will be working on the senior campus next year.
8W wishes everyone a great holiday and hopes everyone stays safe!

The Year 9JJ class were very excited this week as our DFES uniforms were delivered. We immediately had to try on our amazing new uniforms and could not believe how smart and official we look!! Our class then had a great discussion on the Year 10 DFES program and what activities we will be taking part in next year. Some of these activities include bush survival, fire safety, bush cooking, orienteering, putting up tents and making shelters along with bush walking. We will be very prepared to start the program in term 1 of Year 10.

Whoa! Term 4 has been a total whirlwind for us in 9RJ! This term we sent away our ASDAN portfolios (Key Steps) for External Moderation which exhibited over 90 HOURS of learning journeys and achievement across a variety of subject domains. The e-portfolios (on an iPad) evidence learning through videos, worksheets, electronic work, screenshots, and written annotations and reflections. We achieved the maximum number of Certificates of Achievement (x3) this year which testifies to how hard the students have worked. Our portfolios were recognised by moderators as “impressive” and full of “amazing activities”. One moderator said “The projects undertaken to produce this evidence was top shelf.”
Obviously we were pretty chuffed with this feedback as it recognises the students for all their hard work this year.
Another highlight for us in 9RJ was looking at renewable energies with a focus on solar power. Our students were given an opportunity to demonstrate some innovation and creative thinking skills in trying to create the most effective way to capture (and retain) the suns heat in a makeshift oven. We tested our ovens with a block of ice and, given that it took too long to melt the ice (25 minutes), we made some changes to our ovens to make them even HOTTER. Next, we waited for a hot day to see if we could cook an egg… our ovens ranged between 10-20 degrees hotter inside than outside (not bad!) but the egg barely cooked, sadly. Oh well! All in the name of science!!!

What a busy year it has been for 10S with term 4 no different. In week six we had our 3-course graduation lunch at Bentley Pines restaurant which was an experience for all getting dressed up and demonstrating our fine dining manners that we have learnt during the year in class and in home economics. Then there was Camp in week eight, which although it was hot everyone enjoyed. Good luck next year at Sevenoaks year 10S, I know you will enjoy it.

Group 2
Over the course of the year the students in Group 2 have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It has been pleasing to see new friendships form. The senior students have attended countless excursions throughout the year which has provided our students the opportunity of getting to know one another. It is fantastic to hear our students planning and catching up during the weekends and holidays.
Attending Workplace Learning encouraged our students to think outside the box, travel plan, form new friendships, learn new skills, build resilience, improve time management skills, gained a School Based Traineeship and finally develop maturity and independence in the community.
The staff in D9 wish Allister Gibson, Zahrion Nelson, Jack Dellaway, Ryan Sawyer, Bradley Venmore, Hannah Khalil, Panthi Patel and Pearle Kickett a safe and wonderful holiday. Very much looking forward to seeing you all next year.

As we approach the holidays and the end of the school year it is a great time for reflection of 2019 and anticipation of the changes that will occur in 2020.
The Year 12 students have attended the Presentation Ceremony at Crown on the 9th November and will be in Pathways next year. They have all matured so much during the year and I wish them all the best in 2020.
It was great to see the Year 11 students attend the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and hear they are enjoying their holidays however all are still attending ADWPL on Thursdays. I am pleased that all current year 11 students will be staying in our class and we will have a number of new students joining our class next year.
Mrs Pieri, Mrs Bullock and I have thoroughly enjoyed our class in 2019 and we wish you a safe and relaxing holiday.

What a wonderful year we have had in Group 4! It has been so pleasing to see the ‘little’ year 11s and 12s mature into the responsible and independent young people they are today. We will be sad to see them leave our classroom.
It is incredible to think about all the things that Group 4 has done/achieved this year. Most students now have their Learner Driver’s Permit, some are entering School-Based Traineeships next year and others already have paid work. Everybody better wear shades (their future’s so bright). We have learned a lot about job interviews, keeping healthy, life skills, mathematics, DFES Cadets, different sports, goal setting and relationships. The students have had the opportunity to practise and demonstrate their skills on camps and excursions. They should all be proud of their achievements.
A message to the students: We have loved having you all in our class this year. Stay safe and active over the school holidays to minimise your screen time every day. Enjoy the sunshine and remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap. Enjoy your holidays!

Pathways
With most of the Pathways students already finished their schooling the remaining students Adit, Jayden and Brandon have been helping the year 10’s transition into the senior side. During this transition the students have been on couple of excursions. They had a great day at Woodman point recently with several team activities including Bike riding, scooters, Kayaking and cricket. At the school on transition days our students have been involved in a few activities such as cooking, a quiz called Kahoots, the egg challenge and orienteering around the senior campus. We have loved welcoming the year 10 class to our senior campus.

Art
We received some really exciting news earlier this term. Cannington Community ESC was awarded several prizes for artworks entered into the Canning Show’s Schools Art Challenge.
We took out the prize for submitting the second most entries from a school, placed 2nd for our group mural, Daelen Perkins of 7ST was awarded 3rd prize and Isaac Lo of 7ST took out the Highly Commended award. A fantastic achievement!
In light of holidays being just around the corner, Year 7 MTT created artworks inspired by the Australia Day fireworks, as seen over the Swan River. We think they’re very pretty and we are very pleased with the outcome.

Tradestart
Tradestart students have worked very well this term. One of the projects they have been working on is to design and paint Australian murals on to the sides of the table tennis table as well as repaint the rest of it in AIR. colours. The results are fantastic! Well done to everyone involved!

As the year comes to a close and student attendance is decreasing, we would like to Congratulate Nicholas Fuller, Hugo Hendrawan, Zidane Hartono and Lakesha Long in securing a School Based Traineeship at Australia Post through Edge Employment Solutions. The above boys completed their first work day in Week 9 in which they enjoyed.
On Thursday 5th December we had the pleasure of attending Hannah Khalil and Pearle Kickett-Littely’s graduation ceremony at Passport 2 Employment office in Subiaco. Well done girls on this achievement.
The transition for Year 10 students leaving from Sevenoaks has been running smoothly. Thanks to the staff in assisting this.
Finally, we would like to thank all staff and students for their hard work and efforts in making workplace learning a valuable program. Best wishes to all for Christmas and New Year.

Beating holidays season stress and anxiety
The festive season is meant to be a time of joy, but for many people it can be a time of stress, anxiety, disappointments and loneliness. Holidays season comes with high expectation of perfect, happy families enjoying luxurious celebration and gifts, but not all of us are able to live up to these ideal.
For those who have recently lost a loved one, this season can intensify feeling of grief and sadness.
Some people experience feeling of isolation, financial pressure or increased family conflict that can make this a very stressful time of the year.
However, there are some steps you can take to help manage stress and anxiety during the festive period.
1. Money worries
- Identify what’s causing you financial stress. Plan ways to reduce spending. For example, you could suggest to your family and friends that you only buy gifts for the kids, or organise a “Secret Santa” with the family and friends.
- If you can’t afford expensive restaurants meals, organise a BBQ in the park or a party at home where everyone brings a plate of food.
2. Dealing with family tension
- Set realistic expectations.
- Put the kid’s first.
- Drink in moderation.
- Avoid know triggers.
3. Managing loneliness
- Connect with friends and family.
- Volunteer. Why not lend a hand to a local shelter over Christmas? There are lots of charities who need help.
- Attend community events.
- Make plans for Christmas Day. Develop a plan in advance to avoid feeling depressed or stressed on the day. For example, make yourself a special breakfast, buy yourself a gift in advance so that you can enjoy on the day.
Have a great holiday season and a Happy New year!!

How are nutrition and mental health linked?
At Cannington Community Education Support Centre, we believe that students’ mental health is just as important as their physical health. According to ‘BeYou’, the national initiative set up by the Australian Government; healthy eating helps children and young people cope more effectively with stress, better manage their emotions and get a good sleep – all of which assist learning.
Most research about nutrition and mental health has focused on adults. We know that good nutrition is associated with better mental health outcomes, whereas a poor diet is associated with a greater risk of depression and anxiety. However, emerging research that focuses on children and young people has also found a relationship between unhealthy diets and poorer mental health outcomes.
The good news is that improving what you eat can lead to improvements in your mental health, so it’s never too late to encourage healthier eating patterns.
With the holidays shortly upon us and with the temperatures set to sore, most of us don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. So once the festivities and indulgences of the holiday season are over, take a look below at some budget friendly and easy meal ideas from the health departments ‘Eat for Health’ website. They will save you time and help keep your family healthy. Who knew a basic mince recipe could be so versatile!

Happy holidays!
