As an Independent Public School we will be producing our first Business Plan. The plan will cover a three-year period and is endorsed by our school board. It sets out our priorities and targets for improvement. Thanks to those parent/caregivers who responded to the surveys last year – we have used this information in our planning. We are seeking another parent representative for our school board and if you are interested please email Tanya.buchan@education.wa.edu.au by March 20th.

Briefly our priority areas for the business plan are; #Can Do

Curriculum: Literacy, Numeracy, Social Skills and Mental Health.
Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework: a diverse welcoming school.
Networks: Parent support, NDIS, Therapy.
Directions: VET pathways and Career education.
Organisational Governance: Business planning, Board, Budgeting.

Staff have done a lot of work getting these priorities set and are in the process of developing strategic and operational plans for each area. We plan to have our Annual Report completed by end of term one and have the Business Plan ready for publication early in term two. They will be published on our website but if you would like a printed copy please contact the office and we will get one for you.

Apart from finalising our planning at the school level staff hopefully will have met with everyone to develop IEP’s or MAP’s. Fundamentally every single student in our school is our priority - there are lots of challenges but if we all work together with our ‘Can Do’ spirit we can provide the best opportunities for our students to grow and flourish.

It’s not all seriousness at Cannington, the senior students always start the year with a bang - the school ball followed by the Rottnest Island camp and ending up with Fun day at Adventure World. I know my high school was never that much fun. I hope you enjoy the stories about these events as well as the other articles in the newsletter. If there are any items, you think should be included in the newsletter please let us know.

Did you know your school:

  • has a band who will be performing at a pub soon
  • Provides food to those less fortunate in our community
  • produces our own eggs and soon hope to sell pizzas
  • has a breakfast club for all the students who can start their day with a milo and some toast
  • has a therapy dog in training and that we provide plants for the local member of parliament.

Get involved in your school we welcome your input and value our role as a community school.

Class Update

7MSS

Welcome to 7MSS in demountable 2. All nine students have made the transition from primary to high school rather seamlessly. We are familiarising ourselves with the timetable, our new friends, school environment and last, but not least, staff. We have been busy so far engaging with the curriculum. Much to our teachers’ surprise, some of us have even said our favourite subjects are maths and literacy! We have even surprised ourselves with how much fun we are having with learning.

Mrs Martlew is reading us Paper Planes which we are enjoying. We are excited as we will also be watching the movie to see how the novel and the film compare.

We have also created some optical art with Mrs Martlew using the first initial of our names. They look fantastic.

Here are some of the comments from the students in 7MSS:

“I thought year 7 would be hard, but it’s fun because I get to see the staff every day. I like literacy lessons the most.” Dylan Johnson

“It was a bit weird at first, but now it’s fun. I like numeracy on Thursdays when we count our AIR tokens.” Mandy Ballard

“At first I thought it was scary, then I felt better. Now, I like it. I especially like gym sessions.” Jaimie Hayes

“I like talking to Mr Rossi about Fortnite. I love cooking for academy.” Jayden Farquhar

“I like dance club during social skills time.” Sarah Al Asadi

“I like playing Hangman during social skills time with Mr Sands and Mr Smith. I enjoy art with Mrs Thomas.” Mark Austria

“I like recess and lunch the most.” Omar Boksmati

The staff in the room have noticed that Sheree is particularly taken with some of her TEACCH activities and enjoys her time in the egg chair.

Zachary enjoys any time spent on the computers whether it be for work or spare time.

Charline Martlew

7WS

Welcome to 7WS in room 1.5. We have had a busy start to the year, making new friends and getting familiar with our new class and fantastic new furniture. We are slowly settling into our daily routine. Activities include guided reading, decoding and visual literacy along with cooking and woodwork which seem to be some of the favourites of the class. A fun activity everyone is enjoying is the class visits to the library and sharing our reading with our new friends.

Here are some of our comments:

Being in 7WS makes me feel happy. I enjoy sharing and playing with my new friends in class. Dylan Ryan

I am feeling a little bit nervous about being in high school. My new friends are helping me to feel a little bit happier. Monique Park

I like dancing during music classes. Matthew Hicks

I like to play soccer at lunch times. Amy Craig

I like high school. It has lots of things for me to do. I love the Just Kidding books. I have learnt about zombies, and they are creepy. I enjoy the iPads, computers and the chickens. Lachlan Nightingale

I enjoy ordering my lunch from the canteen. I like the mac and cheese pasta and Up and Go strawberry milk. Germano Masino

8S

We have started the year in an exciting manner by making ‘Healthy Lifestyle Choices’. As part of this program, we begin our day with morning fitness (we have chosen to walk around the school oval). We have created a ‘My Fitness Record’ book using the book creator app on our iPads where we record the date, time and laps covered every day. We also add photographs on a weekly basis. During our math lessons we are using this record to calculate the distance we walked each week. Our fitness goal is to gradually increase the distance covered each term.

Alongside the physical fitness of a healthy lifestyle, we have been focusing on a healthy diet in our independent living lessons and the importance of personal hygiene in our health lessons. We discussed the importance of including vegetables and fruits in our diet and as a reminder of making healthy choices we created a superhero vegetable/ fruit poster to display in our classroom.

Another exciting achievement we have accomplished this term is designing our own sports tee shirt. This was really interesting. We first drew our desired image on a piece of paper (Mrs Sands used a special device and transferred our image from the paper to our tee shirts). We coloured the image using fabric colours. We are extremely proud of ourselves.

We are looking forward to a very busy and productive term ahead with shopping activities, community services, enterprise activities and fun excursions linked to our literacy, numeracy, ASDAN and Ignite Award programs.

Susan Solomon

8W

We have had a positive and enthusiastic start to year 8. In week 2 we welcomed a new student into our class and have enjoyed getting to know Henry.

The term has seen us hit the ground running with plans to go on an excursion on Friday March 1 where we will attend a workshop with an exhibiting sculptor at Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe.

This year we are once again working towards an IGNITE award with Awards WA – this time it is the Level 4 award. We will be accruing hours for physical fitness, developing a hobby, volunteering in our community and adventurous journey. Any excursions we participate in are designed to help us achieve these hours. We are also completing an ASDAN award called Key Steps.

We have handed over our chicken enterprise to the incoming year 7 students but we will have Bentley our therapy dog coming to school three days a week. Our enterprise projects this year include growing and harvesting vegetables to sell to staff, as well as carpet cleaning the classrooms in the middle school.

We are looking forward to a busy and productive 2019.

Rhoda Whelan

9JJ

We are cooking with gas!!!! 9JJ has taken on a very exciting project for enterprise. We are providing healthy snacks to the staff on a weekly basis and have already made over $40.00!

We started by researching different types of recipes and healthy foods to make. Our class decided that each week we would alternate between sweet and savoury treats. So far our healthy sausage rolls have been a real winner and will be back by popular demand in week 6.

Our enterprise project extends into our literacy and numeracy program along with the Duke of Edinburgh as we had to create a business plan, explore different marketing strategies, discuss costs involved, tally and collate orders, compare profit and loss figures and graph results while recording feedback from the staff.

Reece Wilkie has proven to be a formidable salesman, who delivers a great marketing pitch to the staff each week. Our students also address other classes with what products will be available the following week and this is really improving confidence in public speaking skills. Through the processes of selecting, preparing, cooking, and serving food 9JJ students are developing their creativity and interpersonal understanding, along with skills that contribute to organisation, communication and healthy well-being.

Judi Janes

9RJ

Students in 9RJ have settled into the new year nicely – especially because we have brand new furniture which we love (yay!)! For example, we have a neat little booth which we use for small group work, a round table perfect for discussions and 1:1 support, and an L-shaped desk with soft furnished seating, and stools that are more suited to growing teenagers. At Cannington Community ESC, we are aligning ourselves with current education research by creating learning “spaces” that allow us to more easily differentiate tasks to tailor learning to individual needs.

This term we are looking at environmental threats in science. Students have investigated a range of issues affecting the planet (such as plastic pollution and waste) and discussed what we can be doing in our everyday lives to reduce the impact of these threats. We conducted a very interesting science experiment by creating our own polluted “ocean” with an oil spill. The results of our experiment showed how difficult it was to clean up an oil spill, however, it also showed the effectiveness of some modern techniques such as the use of human hair to absorb oil (I know, right! Pretty cool).

We are using Sphero robots to learn about coding whilst also learning about angles and shapes. So far we have learnt to code a sphero to trace out a rectangle using our knowledge of distance, speed, angles, and direction. We have plans to code the Sphero to make more complicated shapes and patterns as our skills improve! We’ll keep you updated.

10G

10G has had a hectic start to the year! We have been doing fun activities such as snorkelling, cooking, Academy, gardening, yoga and the Music Rocks program.

Cooking is lots of fun. Jason Petoe

I love going to Music Rocks every Friday. It makes me happy because I love playing instruments like the electric bass guitar. We have played Highway to Hell, Life is a Highway, All the Small Things and Iron Man. It has been fantastic to play so many different songs and instruments. That is special to me. Kayleb Dockary

I have enjoyed gardening because I like tidying up the weeds. Malachi Johns

Year 10 has been fun and busy too. Snorkelling at the swimming pool is good fun. Music Rocks is learning how to play good music. I liked our first aid training session on how to help an injured person. Steven Cueva

Gardening and cooking are the best. I can sweep and rake up all the leaves. I say hi to the chickens when we go into the shed. I am trying lots of different food in cooking. Angus Hough

My favourite activities this year have been snorkelling for recreational pursuits and academy. During snorkelling we have learnt how to swim underwater with snorkels at the swimming pool. I liked learning how to glide. I do Lego club for academy and I have built a robot. Cameron Banks

We have cooked Shepherd’s pie, doner kebabs and spaghetti with meatballs. Delicious! Chayton Lloyd

The Students of 10G

Group 1

Zac, Luke, Kevin, Joseph and Chey have all had a wonderful start to year 11 in Group 1. They have enjoyed an excursion to Cottesloe Beach and most of us have already started workplace learning. This term we are looking forward to MAPs, the senior camp at Rottnest Island and Fun Day.

Jenny Lockyer

Group 2

The students in Demountable 9 have made a smooth transition to the senior campus. This term we officially welcome Allister Gibson and Bradley Venmore. The staff and students have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the two individuals.

This term the students have been preparing for the upcoming camp to Rottnest Island. The students have taken part in several activities such as bike riding and a day trip to Cottesloe Beach. The students are certainly counting the days to the camp.

Our Friday elective classes are once again a hit as the students are encouraged to select a course of interest such as; community service, Certificate I in Agriculture, Trade Start, food science and visual arts.

We also have our first senior MAP meeting commencing in week 4. This is a great opportunity as the students are able to discuss their dreams and aspirations for 2019 and beyond.

We are very much looking forward to a busy and productive 2019.

Mustafa Hussein

Group 3

Group 3 has had a busy, yet enjoyable start to the year and it is pleasing to see the students settling in and getting familiar with new routines and new staff. We have a very sociable class that is energetic, boisterous and outgoing and they have formed solid friendship groups already.

We have begun learning about our skills and qualities in English and this has created some interesting discussions.

In HPO we have had our first excursion to Cottesloe Beach and we learnt beach safety skills. Some members of the class have begun water-polo team games at the Leisureplex and are learning basic game tactics.

In Maths the students have started Mathletics and new units of work and enjoy counting their frequent flyer tokens and claiming rewards.

Most students have commenced ADWPL and are all travelling into the community to various locations with minimal fuss.

We had three students attend the School Ball and it looks like all students will attend the Rottnest Island Camp in week 6.

Dwayne Griffin

Group 4

We have had a very busy start to the 2019 school year. The students came back to school after the summer holidays well-rested and keen to get back into a routine. It was great to see so many of our students get stuck straight into workplace learning. We have also hit the ground running with the rest of the curriculum. Some of the interesting things we have been learning are:

  • skills and qualities for resumes in English
  • occupational health and safety in Foundation English
  • number, addition and time in Maths
  • road safety in Driver’s Education
  • how to write SMART goals in Life Coaching (year 11)
  • beach safety in DFES (year 12)
  • tropical cyclones in DFES (year 11)

The students have recently focussed on the components of a healthy lifestyle in HPO/E. On Monday afternoons the students have been engaged in their HPO/E practical sessions where students have been doing one of bike riding, swimming, basketball and table tennis. Soon the students will rotate groups, so each student gets to learn skills from every area.

On 20th and 21st February we went on our first HPO/E excursions to Cottesloe Beach where students had the opportunity to put some theory into practise at the beach. The year 11 students were lucky enough to have a hot, sunny day at the beach, while the year 12 students found ways to enjoy an overcast day. Both groups enjoyed themselves despite the weather conditions.

The year 12 girls in group 4 were very excited to take part in the Sevenoaks Senior College Ball in week 3. Everyone looked stunning in their beautiful outfits. Now that the ball is over the students are thinking about the next big thing: the senior camp in week 6 at Rottnest. We have been preparing for the camp by voting for a disco theme and choosing our meals at Thomson’s. The students are all very much looking forward to the fun times ahead!

Pathways

The Pathways class has settled into the new year smoothly. Most students have either recommenced their workplace learning placements or started new ones and attended ‘Meet and Greets” with new employers.

The students are enrolled into a unit of ASDAN called “Wellbeing” and have watched some Clickview documentaries and movies about bullying and discrimination. The students have been active in discussions and creating posters about the feelings that peers and young people would have in these situations.

During the students BME unit course they have been learning about the importance of team work. In pairs the students have been creating some structures that needed to be strong and then another where they needed to build a structure to protect an egg. They had only 30 minutes. The structures were then tested to see how well they were built. It was a great way to see how well they planned, contributed and worked together as a team.

This week the buzz has been all about the school ball and how much they enjoyed themselves.

Cindi Griffin

Art

7MSS, 7WS, 8S and 8W have had a great start to the year, experimenting with different mediums and techniques to create abstract collages, Laurel Burch-style cats and cover pages for their art portfolios. Students created their Laurel Burch-style cats using chalk pastels and black sharpie pens. Their scratch art portfolio covers were made using oil pastels for the background and etching their name and design in black acrylic paint. When creating their abstract collages, students experimented with different colour dye by blowing, dripping and spraying it onto paper. This was then cut into triangles and arranged onto black card.

Design and Technology

Year 7

Year 7 students are getting used to high school and enjoying exploring new options and facilities. Woodwork students are making a naughts and crosses game to bring home soon and a token holder to go on their desks at school to hold their well-earned AIR tokens. It is great to see many students settling into a new routine so well.

Year 8

Year 8 woodwork students have been making a wooden truck, cutting wooden wheels and using cordless drills for the first time. Models this year will have a bit more emphasis on measuring and marking out skills. A class discussion has started around the idea of choosing a model to make for Mother’s Day that will be ready in time for the day.

Year 9

Year 9 woodwork students are busy making two projects at the moment. One model is a wooden truck, the other model is wooden Tapping Sticks, which the students are turning on the wood lathe and burning patterns on to them with a wood burner. The tapping sticks are replicas of tapping sticks the Aboriginal culture uses in their ceremonies to keep a beat. Students are creating dot art and Australian Animals to burn on to their Tapping Sticks.

Tradestart

Tradestart students have been busy learning about house design and have begun to construct an A3, 3 dimensional model following their own floor plan. Students will complete a full set of plans in the classroom and build their model up over time beginning by using a hand held router to mimic the process of digging the footings. The class is off to the Construction Futures Centre next week to interact with the displays and explore some career options in the building industry.

Key for life Program - Senior School Driver Education

Students participating in the Keys for Life Program have been learning about using their peripheral vision to spot movement and hazards around them. Class members used a pair of glasses that have had the lenses blocked out with a sticker and asked to describe what they could see. Students were then asked to identify things they noticed using their peripheral vision during the week as they travelled around in cars as passengers and report back to class.

Workplace Learning

Year 10

The year 10 students are doing a Work Readiness Program this term. So far, students have taken part in a First Aid and Manual Handling Course. In week 9 we will also do a Safety Course. All of these courses are in preparation for Workplace Learning, which for some students will commence in term 2. The students not starting in term 2 will visit different industries to identify areas of interest. I have continued to enjoy getting to know the students this term and I look forward to a positive and rewarding 2019.

Senior School

The year has started with a bang! Most of our students have already started work placements and are working towards accruing the hours in the workplace. A great start for the year 11 students with some of them going out to work for the first time.

Congratulations to Ethan Barbatano, Eugini Paesu and Lakesha Long. Ethan has been accepted into a Construction Skills Set Course which is being run at South Metro TAFE at the Rockingham Campus. Eugini and Lakesha have both been accepted into Hospitality Skills Set Course at South Metro TAFE at the Bentley Campus. All the students are practicing the travel routes to get to the different campuses until the courses start next month.

It can be daunting to start new ventures but, without exception, students who have been attending a workplace have started their placements with determination and enthusiasm. Well done everyone, hope the start is an indication of how the year will progress.

Student Attendance

Cannington Community ESC encourages all students to attend school daily. We utilise Positive Behaviour Support strategies to support attendance by offering class tokens as well as end of term assembly raffles for students whose attendance is 95% or greater. The Department of Education requires students to attend school every day and a reason to be provided for any absence. The school roll is a legal document and can be subpoenaed for court cases. When a student misses a day a week for a term they have effectively lost two weeks of education for the year!

If your student is unable to attend please contact your child’s teacher or the office to advise of the absence. You can make contact by phone, 9351 2480 for middle school, 9356 4996 for senior school or text message to 0437 808 340. Thank you to all parents/guardians who are already following these guidelines.

2019 School Ball

On Friday 22 February twelve students and two partners attended the Sevenoaks Senior College Ball at the Novotel Langley Hotel in Perth. Some students arrived in limousines and other exotic cars. All the students were dressed in their glamourous ball gowns and tuxedos. The ballroom was decorated in an elegant Chinese New Year black and red theme with red roses as centre pieces. A wonderful night was had by all with great food, lots of dancing, a photo booth and our own Emma Birsa winning the “Dancing Queen Award” for the evening.

The School Chaplain

A big welcome to all of our new families. I am the school chaplain and would like to introduce myself - I love being a chaplain, a husband, a father, and two weeks ago, a grandpa. I love everything that relates to physical wellbeing, and I especially love CrossFit and my gym. I enjoy music, advocating for justice, watching movies, travelling, meeting new people everywhere, hiking mountains, and sharing my story.

I love working at Cannington Community ESC and value the opportunity to meet and support everyone. If you would like to meet with me, please email or phone me, or come to school and ask for me.

May 2019 be a very rewarding year, with lots of great experiences for you and for your families. I am here for you. I just want to share a quote, “I know who I am, I have a very strong sense of self”—Kristen Stewart.

IMPORTANT IMMUNISATION NEWS- YEARS 7, 8 AND 10 STUDENT

Students in years 7, 8 and 10 should have already come home with more information about the school immunisation program for 2019, including consent forms. Many of these consent forms have already been returned so thank you for your prompt response. If your year 7, 8 or 10 child has not received this information please enquire with the school. These Vaccinations are free of charge and of great importance.

Years 7 and 8 School-Based Immunisation Program - The Department of Health is offering parents of students in years 7 and 8 the opportunity to have their child vaccinated against pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, diphtheria and human papillomavirus (HVP).

Year 10 Meningococcal ACWY School Based Immunisation Program - The Department of Health is offering parents of students in year 10 the opportunity to have their child vaccinated against Meningococcal ACWY.

Recently there has been an increase in meningococcal infection caused by a particular type of bacteria “serogroup w”. Meningococcal disease can affect any age group, however some of the highest rates of meningococcal carriage and illness occur among ADOLESCENTS and this age group can transmit bacteria to people who are at an increased risk of infection. It is hoped that by immunising year 10 students that transmission of meningococcal will be reduced in the larger community. The Department of Health is offering parents of students in year 10 the opportunity to have their child vaccinated against Meningococcal ACWY.

For more information, please visit:
