Last day of school 2018

13 December 2018

From the Principal’s Desk

Having just completed my final long service leave overseas, I would like to specially acknowledge Mrs Whittington and Ms Bates for filling in the principal’s job; and to Miss Jones and Mrs Griffin for taking on some of the deputy principal role.

The school is an absolute hive of activity as the year is drawing to a close, especially for our senior students. We celebrated the achievements of our leaving year 12 students at the presentation ceremony at Crown Perth. The students looked resplendent in their gowns and sashes. It was great to see some parents there. Big thanks to those staff who volunteered to give up their Saturday morning to help get the students ready. Congratulations to all the students for their achievements and to those leaving school - all the best. Our award winners on the day were Stacy Northcott (Caltex All-Rounder) and Ewan Pentland (Westscheme VET award).

We also celebrated student achievement recently with the Awards WA presentation at the City of Canning. The mayor presented certificates to our Duke of Edinburgh and Ignite Award recipients. Students from year 11 and years 8/9 participated in the program and received their awards. The City of Canning CEO said it was one of the best and most emotional awards events that he had been to. Super well done to all our students who have shown they can give back to their community and challenge themselves. Thanks to Mrs Lockyer and Mr Arrantash for their leadership in this area.

As I write, the DFES Senior School Cadets are camping in Dwellingup. The weather looks great for camping and it will be a fun learning experience for the students. Let’s hope the flies don’t spoil all the activities. I look forward to hearing back from Mr Hussein and the team. Our year 11 students finish up next Friday after their annual lunch at Sizzlers. The year 10 lunch is taking place at the Pines Restaurant in Bentley. Given my increased girth I have declined invites to both luncheons but am sure the students will do themselves and their school proud.

Congratulations to Miss Jones who achieved her Level 3 teacher status this term. This is a significant accomplishment and is only presented to those teachers who have demonstrated that they are experts. We are fortunate enough to have a number of senior teachers at our school and three Level 3 teachers.

Last Friday our Workplace Learning Appreciation Breakfast was well attended. It is one way we show our gratitude to the staff and community businesses who support our students in this important school function. Well done to all involved. Thanks to Mrs Pears, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Banks for getting the function organised and co-ordinating the program through the school.

Parent/caregivers attended an information session on the NDIS and transition to work at our senior campus. Mr Williams from the National Disability Service is happy to come and speak to parents again about the NDIS, as we will be holding more parent information sessions next year.

We are very proud of two of our senior students - Tyson Worthington and Stacy Northcott who have been selected to play with the Ivor Burge WA Men’s Basketball team. They will join an ex-student Kenneth Opoku and compete in the National Championships in Canberra on February 13-17.

We are expecting quite a big cohort of year 7 students next year. We will be full as a school with little room for further enrolments. Staffing is nearly completed and the full staff list will be published in the final newsletter of the year. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram and subscribe to our School Zine app and School Website.

Mrs Gwynneth Dudman has retired after many years of dedicated service.
Thank you Mrs Dudman, we will miss you.

Class Updates

7C

7C has been very busy since our last report. Our months of carefully maintaining our worm farms has paid off with our first collection of worm castings recently. The students enjoyed sorting through the castings to find worms to remove. Our students then visited the recent Market Day at Kensington Secondary School to sell the worm castings which were well received.

This semester the class has been learning to write computer programs using the Scratch computer coding program. The students are learning a lot about the different types of code (events, commands, motion, sensing and data to name a few). The students are really enjoying experimenting with what each type of code does and will ultimately be able to create their own computer games for others to play.

During term 4 we have also started learning about crowd sourcing as a way to solve complex problems by sharing the workload. As part of our ASDAN program we have joined the Western Shield animal identification project from Zooniverse The students really enjoy trying to locate and determine the type of native animal that the motion capture cameras photograph.

7S

We will start off our news by going back to the last day of term 3 which was a memorable day for all of us in 7S. As part of our Ignite program we had a fantastic day having fun, trampolining at Bounce in Cannington. We also enjoyed walking through the newly redeveloped Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre and looking at the new shops and facilities. The whole class progress has been very motivating and it is wonderful to observe friendships grow and positive attitude develop further in term 4.

This semester in science, we have been learning about the solar system and planets. We thoroughly enjoyed researching, discussing and sharing interesting facts about planets. As part of our learning we created a three-dimensional model of the planets using coloured cards. Creating this model helped us learn about the size and position of the planets, as well as the power of team work and cooperation.

Throughout this year, we have been learning about road safety and commuting skills in the Community Access program. We have had several excursions to practice these skills. This term we walked to Hambley’s Supa IGA in Queens Park. We learnt life skills such as following a shopping list, locating items on the shelves, comparing prices and products, reading labels and choosing the right product.

Term 4 has been extremely busy so far. We are all excited and getting ready for our first camp in high school!

We have had an interesting start to this term. In week 2 our class pet arrived. Bentley is a pure bred Basset Hound puppy. He has had his vaccinations and has been attending our class most days. We have been learning about how to care for a puppy. He is very chilled out and sleeps most of the time. He loves coming to help with the chickens, but isn’t very fussed about doing fitness in the mornings. We are looking forward to being able to teach him some tricks. Eventually, when he is old enough, he will be trained as a Therapy Dog, so coming into our classroom is good for him.

Our chickens are laying eggs every day now and we have been calculating the average weight of our eggs over the last two terms. We have noticed that the average weight is stable at 63g per egg and has been like this for 6 weeks. We are getting between 9 and 11 eggs every day.

Last Friday we went to Market Day. We were really interested in the large variety of things being sold. We made corn relish to sell. This was the first excursion that we took only bus transport.

We have a busy remainder of the term coming with the presentation of our Duke of Edinburgh IGNITE award next week at the City of Canning offices, camp in week 8 and hosting the final assembly for the year in week 10.

Rhoda Whelan

8JS

Using our Promethean 86 inch Active Panel (an interactive white board), we have learnt how to make and interpret graphs using interactive stories and games. We have applied this new skill by tracking the growth of our wheat crop on a weekly basis (which is nearly one metre tall!). As part of our ongoing science experiment, we only fertilised half of our wheat crop. It has become VERY apparent what the impact of fertiliser has on a food crop in Australia (see if you can notice the difference in our photos!). We are looking forward to seeing the crop ripen so that we can harvest the grain in due course.

Students are busy planning an adventurous journey to the Perth Zoo to explore new places, learn about animal classification, and develop independence in using public transport and money. In preparation for this trip, we have been learning a range of things across different subject areas in the classroom, from money skills in maths through to animal classification in science. Students have used the Transperth Journey Planner to plan our trip online. We will be developing independence (and confidence) by taking a train, a bus and a ferry to get to the zoo.

In our class, students practice counting money every morning (as part of our Frequent Flyer point program) which is used to buy Super Mario Stars (subject to an exchange rate!) that earn us rewards. We hope to transfer our money-counting skills to a real life situation at the zoo when buying our lunch, a drink or a souvenir.

Reece has been researching Charles Darwin and is learning about his theory of evolution and natural selection. He is planning a special Darwinian-focused trip to the zoo to investigate a variety of animals (such as the Galapagos tortoise and various birds) to determine the impact of their environments on their feet, beaks or shells.

Other students have been learning about living versus non-living things, and what living things need to survive. Students have used an interactive Zoo map (online) to plan how to find their favourite animal. We are excited to see these animals in real life after learning about them in the classroom.

Rachael Jones

8W

This term we officially welcomed Brianna to 8W! She has had a smooth start at Cannington and enjoys particularly cooking classes.

This term we have continued our morning fitness routines. Morning fitness is a great way to start each day. It kick-starts our metabolisms, increases our physical and mental energy and helps us develop strong self-discipline. We do something different each morning. Boxing, circuit training and yoga, just to name a few.

Our class has been working on sprucing up our class garden this term. We planted some new flowers, added mulch and did some weeding. We’ve also been looking into ways to keep the ravens away because they like to make a bit of a mess in our garden!

In science we have been learning about renewable and non-renewable energy and its impact on the environment. We enjoyed learning about the different types of energy and how items we use in our day-to-day lives are powered.

The students of 8W are looking forward to school camp in week 8. We hope everyone enjoys the final term of the year!

Lynna Woon

9T

It has been another busy term for 9T who have welcomed two new students, Charmaine and Khyran. Welcome! We have hit the ground running by working with Ms Gale in the garden, weeding, mulching, mowing lawns and planting. We’ve loved getting our hands dirty. Even Hiba had a go on the lawn mower!

For science this term we have been investigating organic and non-organic materials and how they decay or decompose. A range of organic and non-organic materials was buried in week 1. We are anxiously awaiting week 6 when we will dig them up and look under a microscope to examine the contents of our ‘grotty bags’!

This term in Aboriginal Studies we have been researching influential Indigenous Australians such as Cathy Freeman, David Unaipon and Eddie Mabo. It has been very interesting. We especially enjoyed watching Cathy Freeman’s 400m win at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. We weren’t even born then!

10C

Students in 10C have had a busy term completing class work, taking part in transition activities at the senior campus, attending a GSI employment work readiness course, preparing seed cards for sale at Market Day and attending the Abilities EXPO at Crown. In this photo, students are highlighting help sites for cyberbullying on their group poster.

The Employer Breakfast: We got to school at 7:15am to help with guests that were invited to the morning appreciation breakfast. We wore our cadet uniform. We greeted each guest and walked them to block 10. We spoke with the guests and answered questions they had about our work. After the breakfast we helped clean up and put tables and equipment away. When we were done we took a group photo. We enjoyed greeting the guests and talking with them.

Holleigh Jones and Mitchell Keene

Abilities Expo: On Tuesday my class went by train to the Abilities Expo. My favourite part was looking at the Crown Theatre Building. At the expo I learnt about where to get help if you have a disability.

Brandon Champion

HD Streetwise Present Wrapping: We went to HD Streetwise by taxi and picked up the presents given to us by the workers. We took the taxi back to school with the gifts. We wrapped the presents for the homeless people who don’t get to celebrate their birthdays. We also wrote the cards for them as well to wish them happy birthday from 10C. After we finished them, Luke and Sajjad took them back to HD Streetwise. We enjoyed wrapping the presents because it was fun and it felt nice to give them their gifts.

Katie Usher

Battlezone DFES Camp: The year 10 students went to Battlezone for DFES Camp. I was in the blue team. It was a hard fight and red won!

Luke Marshall

Employment and Community Participation Skills Program: On Wednesday we went to Good Samaritan Industries (GSI) in Bannister Road, Canning Vale to do our work readiness course. We signed in and got our name tags, met the teacher named Ronnie and were with a group from another school. We discussed and wrote about the social, environmental and physical hazards we could come across in life. We worked in our logbooks. We also used laptops to travel on Google Maps to find out how long it takes to get from Bannister Road to the places where we wanted to go, either walking, on public transport or by car. We all had a great time on this virtual excursion!

Hugo Hendrawan

10G

We go to GSI on Thursdays by taxi. We are doing a work related course. We study are personal hygiene, work safety and presentation. We go to the Conference Room. There is a canteen, but we can’t use it.

Zidane Hartono

I liked the Expo last Tuesday. There were lots of stalls and people were giving away free pens and bags. On Friday, I volunteered as a DFES cadet to help with the Employers’ Breakfast. We wore the DFES special uniform and my job was to check in the guests as they arrived.

Joseph Martin

The trip to Shelley Beach was very interesting. I liked all the activities, especially the bike riding around the streets. The weather was fine but cloudy.

Cheyenne Newton

I went to Shelley Beach and I went on the canoes. I loved that. I also tried fishing and went for a bike ride.

Zac Bonnefin

I helped to sell our class Christmas products at Market Day last week. I also went around the stalls to see what else was for sale. There was a raffle on, but I didn’t win anything. I wore the special DFES uniform last Friday. It was the Employers’ Breakfast and Alex, Joseph, Jack, Mitchell, Holleigh and I helped out. We met the guests and took them down to the breakfast in the BER building.

Zahrion Nelson

I had a lot of fun at Shelley Beach. There were lots of physical things to do, like kayaking, bike riding and fishing. We fished off the jetty and on the beach. Nobody caught anything. I liked wearing the DFES dress uniform last Friday. A group of us cadets helped out at the Employers’ Breakfast. Our job was to meet guests and take them down to the BER building.

Alex Melling

I liked the trip to Shelley Beach, especially the fishing. I also am enjoying going to transition on Mondays because it’s interesting at the senior campus.

Daniel Piay

I went to the EXPO at the Crown, Burswood. I got lots of freebies to take home. My favourite was a sword made of balloons. I was on our stall at Markey Day for the whole time. I sold about 40 products.

Jack Dellaway

Group 1

It’s that time of year again when we reflect on our accomplishments over the course of the year. Group 1 have worked steadily throughout the year achieving so much, completing all of our courses. It’s almost time to breathe a sigh of relief. We are excited, but also nervous about what our futures hold. Those of us participating in ADWPL have come on in leaps and bounds. Some of us have even been offered permanent work days.

Sadly, we have to say goodbye to two of our students, Dana Sung and Mitchell Floresta. Dana has finished year 12 and is moving back to South Korea with her family. Mitchell has also finished year 12 and has taken up employment at GSI in Canning Vale. We wish both Dana and Mitchell all the best for their future.

Charlene Martlew

Group 2

This year senior students have been participating in Keys for Life classes each Monday. Students learn about how to be a safe driver and how to reduce their risk when on the road. At the end of the year students have the chance to sit a road rules theory test. If a student scores 24/30 or higher, it is a pass mark and they are issued with a Pre Driver Education Program Test certificate. The certificate can be presented at the Police Licensing Centre, along with paying a fee and having 100 points of ID to gain their Learners Permit. Congratulations to Emma Birsa, Eugini Paesu, Stacy Northcott, Nicholas Fuller, Tyson Worthington and Zachary Leheste who all achieved a pass mark in their Pre Driver Education Program test at school this year.

Group 3

ESSN Athletics Carnival: The ESSN Athletics Carnival was held at Atwell College on Wednesday 19 September. Due to workplace learning, only year 12 students attended from the senior school. These students were broken into girls and boy’s groups and they represented the school admirably. Students displayed their athletic prowess, teamwork skills and great sportsmanship to assist the school in winning a trophy.

Staff race - lots of fun for everyone!

As part of our Certificate I in Agrifoods, students have travelled by the school bus and met with Chorus (Volunteer Task Force) to complete gardening tasks in the community. Each week we receive an email telling us what locations we will visit for the week. Once we are on-site we sign. Then we have a safety toolbox meeting to ensure we have the correct PPE and conduct a site safety check. We use tools such as lawnmowers, blowers, secateurs and rakes to complete the gardening tasks. Learning and following correct manual handling practices means we can move heavy equipment, identify hazards and work as part of a team.

Group 3 have been busy this term, attending dinners, breakfasts, carnivals, expos, transition activities and completing tasks in our various subjects.

We have had to finish our HPO individual games checklists and this has seen the students performing skills such as learning how to ten pin bowl without a rail, playing pool by following all the rules, how to hit a bullseye in archery and how to score a game in table tennis.

English tasks have created much debate over the issue of sharks in Australian waters and researching what is the best way to travel to and access Optus Stadium to see Taylor Swift. During ASDAN activities we have learnt about the dangers of STI’s and how to stay safe online.

Finally, it is pleasing to see a number of our students gain their Learners through the Keys 4 Life program and to the students who just missed out, keep practicing and book your test at the licencing centre during the holidays.

Dwayne Griffin

Pathways

It has been a busy time for Pathways students this term. We have been finishing off all our work and attending lots of excursions. We have farewelled three students already – Lleyton, Sheldon and Rhys and we wish them all the very best in the future, whatever that may be! As the term progresses we will be saying farewell and good luck to the rest of the class as they head into the wide world and begin their lives as independent young adults. Some of our class members have been with us for six years now and they will be missed by staff and students.

So far this time we have participated in the year 12 graduation dinner, the graduation breakfast, a transition excursion to Shelley Beach, the ESSN soccer carnival, Market Day at Kensington School and the Abilities Expo at Crown casino. No wonder we are all exhausted!!! We are looking forward to our next transition excursion with the year 10 students in week 6 when we will be going to Woodman Point for the day. We also have the DFES camp coming up and are looking forward to spending two days in Dwellingup camping under the stars.

As the graduating class we would like to say thank you to all the staff at CCESC for looking after us over the years and we would like you to know that we have had the times of our lives! THANK YOU.

Design and Technology

The year 7 students have completed a model Cessna plane and are working on a skid steer loader. This has meant working with acrylic and learning how to use heat to bend the plastic into the shape of a bucket. Some students have been working with casting plaster and rubber moulds to cast various shapes and then paint them as ornaments.

The year 8 students have been working towards completing rocket launcher pencil holders. This is a large project that involves making lots of separate parts over most of this term. This week should see the pencil holders completed. Students are also being introduced to the wood lathe. This will give them some skills to commence the next project, a paper hand towel dispenser.

Year 9 students are working on their big project for the year, which is a farm tractor and tipping trailer. This is a complicated project that encompasses a range of skills and many parts. Students are clearly enjoying seeing the parts come together and turning into a great model they can be proud to take home.

Year 10 students have completed donating their time as a part of the community service section of the Duke of Edinburgh award. Students have produced over 50 wooden toys that have been donated to Santa’s Workshop for distribution as Christmas gifts this year. It is a great achievement for our students to make toys that meet the high quality standards required by Santa’s Workshop. Students are now starting foot stools as their last project for 2018.

Tradestart students have been busy installing a lattice wall in the garden and storage shelving on our senior campus. It has been a series of proud moments for staff as we watch students working together and problem solving. This work has involved using machines to cut steel and using masonry fixings which is great experience. Students have also been using arc welders and oxy and acetylene equipment to make a number of barbeque plates with folding legs.

Mark Arrantash

Art

The students of 7S, 8JS, 8W and 9T have spent five weeks working on their 3-D papier mache animals. They started with a water bottle and ended up producing some bright and unique animals that are a credit to our art program. I'm very proud of each and every student and the hard work they have put in.

Market Day Term 4

This term Market Day was held at Kensington School on Friday 26th October. The weather was perfect and staff and students from both campuses attended the day. We had a lot of products to sell that students had made throughout the year, ranging from jewellery to homemade dog biscuits to pickled onions.

Students who attended the day helped on the stall to sell products and also shopped up a storm. Our shining star seller of the day was Jack Dellaway. He is definitely a born salesman!

There were a lot of different schools there with stalls selling amazing products. Kensington School put on a sausage sizzle that was very popular.

Mr Griffin drove the school bus to and from CCESC and Kensington all day – he was a trooper! Overall everyone had a fantastic day and we are looking forward to Market Day again next year.

Pathways Group

Workplace Learning

Wow, what a year! I would like to start by congratulating all the students who have participated in the workplace learning program this year. We are very proud of the many achievements the students have accomplished and the commitment many have demonstrated to the program throughout the year.

As term 4 comes to an end, so does the schooling journey for some of our year 12 and Pathways students. We would like to give a special mention to the following students on continuing to work extremely hard and persevering to achieve their goals. Rhys Sturch has secured two days paid work with Interlife and is confidently able to travel independently. Amy Crouchley was successful in a work trial and is now employed two days a week at ACTIV. Nicholas Fuller consistently attending a Passport 2 employment course delivered by Edge Employment.

A big congratulation is in order for Nosisa Mhlope for completing Certificate II in Business and Stacy Northcott and Jasmin Steiner for completing Certificate II in Retail.

Bradly Adamson should be commended for overcoming and persevering with all the challenges he faced along his traineeship journey. I am pleased to say he is close to finishing his Certificate II in Hospitality and should be very proud of the mature attitude and resilience he has developed along the way.

Allana Downing and Rebecca Percival will continue working through a Certificate II in Hospitality. Elvis Lewis, Justin Ng and Callum McSorley-Hayes will continue with their Certificate II in Warehousing.

Aaron Salton will continue to work through a Certificate III in Hospitality, while Tyson Worthington has recently started a Certificate II in Warehousing.

With the NDIS nearly upon us, we would like to remind everyone that if you have any questions or would like any further information to please contact us and we will try and assist.

Almost without exception all of the students have worked extremely well at their work placements and we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Abilities Expo

The year 12 students attended the Abilities Expo at Crown on Tuesday 30th October. It was a great opportunity for them to talk to numerous service providers and really think about what they want to do with their futures, whether it be work or recreation options. All of the students came back to school with multiple show bags full of goodie such as pens and lollies; as well as information galore to take home to parents and carers alike. Not too sure how many lollies made it back to school let alone home though. All of the students displayed impeccable behaviour and it was a pleasure to take them out

ADCAP Assembly Performance

This year the ADCAP Dance class has been busy learning many different dances from a variety of genres including the jive, barn dance, hip hop, funk, disco and jazz. On many occasions we had the staff join our class as they all loved the music and exercise.

It was fantastic to see the ADCAP Dance class perform two high energy dances at the term 3 assembly. Our first dance was a “cowboy partnered” dance to the tune of ‘Cotton Eyed Joe’ Yee Ha!! This was followed by some serious 70s disco moves to ‘Oh What a Night’ which bought back many memories to the staff of their teenage years. Special mention must go to Mr Reyes and Mr Hussein for their wonderful introduction of true John Travolta moves!

This was a great performance as it really did showcase the hard work that has been put in by our dance students throughout the year.

Community Service

The Community Service team would like to thank the entire Cannington community for your very kind donations. We managed to accumulate 29 mobile phones and 86 prescription reading glasses. Our team has worked exceptionally hard in raising awareness and donating the mobiles to the Children's Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation. Blood cancers remain the third biggest cause of cancer death in Australia. Your wonderful generosity and contribution will support and improve quality of life for all affected. Your support will help to provide information, accommodation, emotional support and financial assistance. Thank you all for kindly donating.

Mustafa Hussein

State Emergency Services (SES) Visit

In term 3 the SES visited Cannington Community ESC. It was a great experience for the senior school students to see how these services operate in emergency situations in. We were able to see the specific equipment, vehicles and resources and the communication systems in place.

The students were extremely appreciative when they were told that a lot of these people work on a volunteer basis. They give up their time to help and rescue those in any given emergency situation. The volunteers told the students many stories about people they have assisted in storms, fires, missing person searches, water rescue and car accidents.

Year 10 Transition to Shelley Beach

On Monday 22 October the year 10 students joined the senior school students on an excursion to Shelley Beach. It was an awesome day and the weather was absolutely fantastic! This day is a great opportunity for the year 10 students to mix with senior school staff and students in preparation for next year. Students took part in different activities including kayaking, bike riding, fishing and a serious game of cricket. Mr Rossi showed off his skills when he took a one-handed catch but was then shortly upstaged by Eugini.

We are really looking forward to week 6 when we go out again to Woodman Point. The students will be swimming, body surfing, fishing, playing beach games, as well as enjoying a barbeque lunch. In the meantime, we are really enjoying the year 10 students visiting us each Monday and joining in our classroom activities.

Year 12 Graduation Dinner

A fantastic time was had by all students and staff attending the year 12 graduation dinner at Brando’s Pizzeria Café. The students arrived at the café looking very smart out of school uniform. Everyone made an effort with their appearance by wearing neat and tidy clothes and styled hair. The students were able to enjoy themselves after a busy year at school. For some it signified the end of their schooling. For others it is the beginning of their lives after school. It can be a very exciting but also daunting time for our year 12 students. The food was great and a huge celebratory cake was cut for dessert. It was a wonderful night.

Year 12 Graduation Presentation Ceremony

Congratulations to our graduating class of 2018. On Saturday 3rd November, year 12 students from Cannington Community ESC and Sevenoaks Senior College came together to celebrate their graduation in the Astral Ballroom at the Crown Casino. The students looked amazing in their graduating outfits. The beautiful ceremony presented by Sevenoaks Senior College was greatly appreciated.

We wish them the best of luck – whether they are planning to return to us in 2019 or have aspirations for employment or further studies. We would also like to thank our staff who work tirelessly to ensure the students and their families are cared for.

Thank you and congratulations.

Angela Whittington

Employers Appreciation Breakfast

On Friday November 2 we had our annual Appreciation Breakfast in Block 10 at the Cannington Campus. Employers, job coaches and agencies who provide placements, support and assistance for our student’s futures were invited. It is a great time to catch up with other like-minded people and for us to show our appreciation for the support these people offer the students throughout the year.

Thank you to the group of year 10 students who helped to guide the guests to the venue. A job well done.

Thank you to all who attended. We hope you enjoyed the delicious food and company. We look forward to working with you next year.

School Council News

Andrew Wilson and I recently attended the Independent Public School (IPS) transition program at the Tradewinds Hotel in East Fremantle. We heard from a number of Department of Education branches about the work they do and how they can support the school. We learnt about our responsibilities as an IPS and the role of school boards. Topics included the history of autonomous schools in WA, the Delivery and Performance Agreement, School Review process, Standards and Integrity, Business Planning, Marketing, Workforce Planning and Staff Recruitment and Ethical decision making.

We heard from other schools on their progress as an IPS, as well as a thoroughly engaging presentation from media personality and ex footballer Adrian Barich. Apart from sharing some hilarious stories he is committed to public education. He has served on boards and P&Cs at his children’s schools. Adrian emphasised how schools are part of the community and everyone needs to put in!

It will be a very busy and exciting time next year – please consider how you can help and support our school. We need your feedback and involvement.
