From the Principal’s Desk

Kaya

The last fortnight of school in the middle school has been a hive of activity. After a highly successful camp, we had Market Day, the Year 10 Leavers Assembly, the Duke of Edinburgh and Ignite Assembly and our final school assembly of the year. All these events required a lot of organisation and hard work.

The Middle School camp is a huge undertaking, and Mrs Hickey Jane and all the staff who attended deserve acknowledgement. I really enjoyed looking at the photos – the disco, aquarium and outback splash looked like lots of fun. Everyone looked exhausted but happy after the camp. The seniors will be going to Rottnest in term 1 next year.

Market Day was co-ordinated by Mrs Houden and Mrs Whittington and opened by Hon. Bill Johnston, who was on his last day as a minister but still made the event.   We were joined by Kalamunda, Leeming and Cloverdale ESCs for the event. Classes had produced some wonderful items for sale. I purchased several new household items, including pot plants, door stops, key rings, and utensil holders. A very big thank you to Dylan Pavlovic, who won a table as first prize in one of the raffles and donated it to me! I can’t accept it personally, but I have done it on behalf of the school, and it looks fantastic in my office. Seeing so many of our community there was brilliant, especially ex-students.

Congratulations to Reon Gill, who won the Year 10 ESC Endeavour Award. Reon told me he could not believe it. He was thoroughly deserving of the award. All our Year 10 students were fantastic at the Leavers Assembly, and it was nice to see parents/caregivers attend. I am looking forward to our final assembly and the Ignite awards at Canning City Council Chambers, as they have yet to take place at the time of writing.

You will have been sent student progress reports online. If you would like to discuss the reports, please contact your class teacher. I would like to thank all the classes for their regular Connect Notices to keep families up to date. Thanks also for the feedback around Consent 2 Go and our extensive excursions throughout the school. Students should be very proud of their results, and I know they have appreciated all the hard work of the staff to help them achieve.

I would like to thank our school board for all their work over the year. To Emma, Jude, Jenny, Zena, Paula, Eleanor, Mark, Angela, and Tanya, your expertise and considered views have been key drivers in our school’s growth and development. We will enter a new business planning phase in 2024, which is exciting. I look forward to working with you to develop our plans and demonstrate our accountability.

Several staff are leaving our school this year to work closer to home, or a career change or a completed contract, and we wish them all the best. To Leanne Gale, Carol Bishop, Mahali Selepe, Mel Jones, Sharmila Alam, and Lisa Mc Mahon, all the best in your future endeavours, and thank you so much for your contribution to our school.

Our staff will be at school on the morning of Friday, the 15th. There will be nobody in the office after 11.45 am. All the staff have worked additional hours to finish early on the last day.

May I wish everyone in our school community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I genuinely hope you get to spread some joy and enjoy the festive season. Stay safe and slip slop slap.

Class Updates

7CL

Year 7CL continues to power ahead towards the end of the 2023 School year.

Congratulations to the students for the achievements, independence, and respect they showed to friends and teachers while on camp. Seeing all students have a go and participate in all daily activities was particularly pleasing. We had a fantastic time, and all came back in one piece, with fond memories shared. They were looking forward to doing it all again next year!

Swimming lessons this week and seeing most students in the water, doing their best and following their instructors while having a wonderful time was fantastic.

We have also worked hard on our ESSN Market Day items, wooden puzzles made in Woodwork with Mr Arrantash, Festive Season Pinatas and putting together Festive Season Hampers to raffle, using leftover items from our last Market Day Lucky Dip and other festive things.  Thank you to those who donated recycled craft materials, paper, and articles for our raffle.

As part of our whole class Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) program, 7CL students participated in an auction, bidding for various items they brainstormed together. Items up for auction were baking sessions, raffle tickets for Market Day, Kmart vouchers, iPad time and a range of other ‘premium’ school experiences. Overall, the students enjoyed the experience and were happy with their purchases.

The Class of 7CL

7CM

Well, how quickly did this year go?  Super fast, in our opinion.  We started at the beginning of the year not too confident, but boy, what a difference now.  It has been exciting to watch our personalities develop as well as our independence.

This is what we have liked best about this year:

Jet

I have enjoyed woodwork the most as I have become a better builder.

Chevelle

I’ve liked having time to do meditation and mindfulness after lunch.

Tavis

The best thing about year 7 has been making new friends.

Diesel

I liked going to Outback Splash the best.  I loved the pool.

Elena

I have enjoyed going to the garden the best.

Rayyan

Playing Xbox on a Friday has been fun.

Ammar

Visiting the sensory room.

Lebron

Learning new things in Digi Tech.

Mark

The garden has been my favourite place to hang out.

Samuel

Working out in the gym has been awesome.

We all had the opportunity to be either day or full campers in week 8.  Thank you to all the staff who assisted us to have so much fun.

As a class, this is what we identified as the highlights of camp:

  1. Outback Splash – the slides and pool
  2. AQWA – looking at all the fish and eating fish and chips
  3. Glow Disco – Wear glow products and dance the night away.

Enjoying AQWA

Fun at Outback Splash

This week, we commenced in-term swimming lessons.  It has been great.  However, we are exhausted when we get back to school.  Thankfully, it is the end of the year, and Mrs Martlew has let us chill out in the afternoons.  Some of us have even fallen asleep.

Swimming Lessons

We look forward to returning to school next year, not being the ‘little fish’ of the school.  Have a happy and safe holiday season, and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.

It’s been a great year, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the staff and students.

Here are a few highlights from this term.

During our literacy lesson, students participated in spelling, phonics, comprehension, form filling, and recipe writing.

Literacy and numeracy recipe activity

                  Literacy locating kitchen equipment

Literacy reading and spelling

Our class visited Zone Bowling in Cannington as part of their numeracy program. Some students had never played bowling before, which was an excellent opportunity to learn a new skill. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves from start to finish. The day's highlight was seeing their reactions when they scored a strike! Price less!

Amir celebrating getting a spare

Ethan getting a strike!

Levi getting a strike!

The girls at bowling

During numeracy, students completed their bowling activity where they had to identify which individual got the highest and lowest scores, how many strikes and spares they received, and compare the overall score from 1 to game 2.

During HASS, students researched some key facts about the Australian Capital Territory.

HASS researching ACT

In health, students brainstormed the benefits of exercising and then went to the gym to participate in activities they would like to add to their personal exercise program.

Working out in the gym

Students learned how to sew a button and make a collage using different patterns in textiles.

To my excellent team, Kiya, Cailah, Zac, and Bailey, thank you for supporting our students and making a difference, and I look forward to working with you again next year.

It has been a hectic term for us, but a great end to an amazing year.

In our literacy group, we finished our Food Truck Project. Thank you to everyone who took the time out and attended our presentation. The students did a fantastic job. They should be very proud of themselves. Special thanks to Ken, who helped design and execute the design of the trucks. Well done, Ken and good work, everyone.

School Camp is the highlight of this term. The students showed enthusiasm and excitement. It was great to see them being independent and responsible for themselves.

Ready for camp

Our visit to Carousel Shopping Centre was a great success. Students followed the map and directions. They also chose and bought their PBS rewards and lunch independently.

9VL

Hello everyone,

The end of the year is here. All of us in 9VL can’t quite believe it. This year has gone so quickly.

The end of the term has seen 9VL have lots of fun. We went to the Resource Recovery Centre in Canning Vale in Week Seven. Here, students watched educational videos, played educational games, and got to see where recycling goes and how it is sorted using machinery, including conveyor belts and magnets.

Excursion at Resource Recovery Centre

In Week Eight, students attended the camp. Students were either full campers or day campers. Day campers had lots of fun at school with music, sensory experiences, Minecraft, Lego and attending Outback Splash for the day. Full campers visited AQWA, Whitfords Nodes Park, Ern Halliday Campsite, Outback Splash and Kings Park. It was fantastic to see students showing their independence and having a go!

Adventures at AQWA

In Week Nine, Market Day was held at our school, and other schools came along and set up stores as well. Everyone had a turn running the store, dealing with customers, and calculating change. They all did a fabulous job today and throughout the year working on the multiple Enterprise products.

Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays to everyone! See you all in 2024!

The 9VL Team

9WP

Hello, parents and carers.

This is the final newsletter for 2023. It has been a good year with progress made by all students. During the year, I sought to challenge the class with their learning to strive and reach new goals. We have also worked hard in mental health and wellbeing, developing personal and social skills and how we interact with each other.

The outlook for 2024 is a busy and challenging one. The students will embark on a new curriculum and participate in Workplace learning towards the end of the year.

Some of our students recently participated in a TAFE tester at Rockingham TAFE. The objective was to provide insight into some of the TAFE courses in the Building and Construction industry. The students learned about bricklaying, plasterboard fixing, and repairing. They then had the opportunity to lay some bricks and learn how to repair a hole in a plasterboard wall.

Working hard at the TAFE tester

Students also had their camp this term at Ern Halliday. The highlight was the day at Outback Splash, where the students could ride the water slides and swim in the pools. It was a fantastic day, and everyone enjoyed themselves, including the students who were day campers. The students who did not attend camp were also kept busy with cooking, arts and crafts, Minecraft, fitness sessions, and a silent disco, and we had a party on the Friday where the students also cooked for it.

Fun at Outback Splash

Overall, everyone enjoyed themselves and had a fun time, whether at camp or school. Looking forward to 2024 and all the exciting prospects that will unfold.

Have a safe and great Christmas and New Year. I will see you all in 2024.

It is incredible how fast the year has gone, and now the Year 10s are about to conclude their time at the CCESC Middle School Campus.  We are very proud of the young men and women the students are maturing into.

They participated in many events in their final term at the Middle School Campus. These have included a parent and student transition afternoon tea at Sevenoaks to help them become familiar with their new campus, visiting Point Walter in Bicton, Woodman Point in Coogee, Kent Street Weir in Cannington, taking part in workshops that promote positive mental health, completed work experience, managed a class market day enterprise stall and received The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award from the Mayor of the City of Canning. We must also mention the fabulous middle school camp they attended at Ern Halliday. The students visited AQWA, Whitfords Ninja Park, Outback Splash, and Synergy Playground and participated in the ‘Glow in the Dark’ Disco.

We also want to make a special mention of Ryan Grant.  He plays at the West Rise Basketball League Division 1 (Ray Owen Sports Centre in Lesmurdie).  His team, East Side, won the grand final this month, and Ryan was judged the most improved player for the 2023 season.  Congratulations Ryan!

Year 10s, we wish you all the best for Year 11 in 2024!

It has been a pleasure to teach you all this year.

10SS

We have been fortunate to be the classroom staff of a fantastic group of students. Watching this excellent cohort learn, grow, and mature over this year has been a pleasure. Time has flown away quickly, and it is hard to believe that these young adults will be moving to the senior campus in a few days. This issue of the newsletter reflects their memories of year 10.

Summer

The Middle school camp is what I enjoyed the most, especially going on the different water slides at Outback Splash. I also enjoyed workplace learning at the Toy Library.

I had fun at camp and enjoyed being in the same dorm with all my friends. My other favourite thing this year was workplace learning, and the place I liked most was the Citiplace Community Centre.

Oliver G

The camp was fun, and what I enjoyed the most was the time we spent at Outback Splash. The highlight of this year for me was catching a fish while fishing at Kent Street Weir as part of the Recreational Pursuits fishing excursion.

We are all missing Wah Sa Lay Paw, who has been unwell and away for the past few weeks and, hence, unable to make her contribution to the newsletter. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Thanks to all the parents and carers for all your support this year. We are wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday!

This term’s focus has been on Market Day, Workplace Learning, and transition.

Students attended a transition excursion to Point Walter. They enjoyed a leisurely day by the river. Students participated in kayaking, biking, and walking the jetty and sandbar.

A lovely day at transition excursion

Market Day is coming, and students have been busy making Christmas-themed items to sell. The class have prepared a range of things, from potholders to ornaments.

Dylan, Winston, Jaimie, Jess, and Daelan completed the Buddy Up program. The Buddy Up program helps prepare students with the skills and knowledge necessary for operating in the workplace. Congratulations to all!

12AF

We have had an incredibly busy last few weeks, and one of the fun things we did was go to Woodman Point. Nadeer and I enjoyed learning how to fish and reel in the line, and Ebony proved to be very good at fishing as she caught a fish.

Nadeer and Ebony having a good time fishing

It has been a wonderful experience teaching Kiara, Hayley, Stevie, Jaydene, Ryan, Charlotte, Nadeer, Henry, Mike, and Cole for the past two years. I have enjoyed every moment with all these students in class 12AF. I hope they have a fantastic and prosperous future and hope they will come back to visit us all.

Good luck and enjoy the rest of your lives.

Annie Foyster

Physical Education

This term has been a busy one and has raced by. Cricket has been our focus sport, and most students have been impressed with their rapid progress. We also had lots of skills testing for our end-of-year reports. Unfortunately, our interschool cricket carnival was cancelled in week 7 due to extreme heat. However, students got to showcase their cricket skills during P.E. sessions. IBO sport and at school camp.

The year 10’s Recreational Pursuits program has continued, with ongoing gym and rock and water sessions. After developing their fishing skills at school, students went on excursions to Kent Street Weir. Though many said it was impossible, Oliver Gallen proved everyone wrong by catching a good-sized Black Bream (his first). Lastly, I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all staff and students for their outstanding efforts throughout the year!

Workplace Learning

Our work for 2023 is nearly done, and what a year it has been.

The students showed so much dedication to the Workplace Learning Program that it seemed the coordinators were almost not required.

Congratulations to our Year 12 students who have left school and transitioned straight into employment.  We also have a record-breaking eleven students who have been accepted for School Based Traineeships which may be completed next year or will run into 2025.

We have loved getting to know the Year 10 students while transitioning to the senior campus.  They have had the chance to have a short experience in several industries, which has been so helpful for us to get the placements correct next year.

We wish you and your family a relaxing and safe Christmas break.  We now have our sights set on 2024, we hope it will be as successful as this year.

Student Services Update

IDPwD is a United Nations (UN) day observed internationally. It aims to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

On Monday, 4th December, CCESC students and staff celebrated IDPwD with some lunchtime fun in our school garden. Student talents were showcased, including some fantastic roaming magic by our resident magician, Summer and beautiful songs were sung by Kiara.  Giant games, bubbles, and yummy snacks were also offered and helped make the celebrations memorable.

Many thanks to all the staff and students involved, including City of Canning Youth Team members.  It was a great team effort.

Mental Health and Wellbeing over the Holidays

This time of year can be challenging for some people.  Holidays can mean a loss or change of routine and time away from friends and support people at school and in the workplace.

It is essential to look after yourself and stay healthy.
