From the Principal’s Desk

We are nearly halfway through term 4. Many of our year 12 students have left, and many of our year 11 students will be leaving week 6. The presentation ceremony at Curtin University with Sevenoaks was a good afternoon, with many students getting well-deserved awards – congratulations to all the award winners – there is a list in the newsletter. We have decided to do our own presentation ceremony next year - the day is too long for the students.

The leavers enjoyed their dinner at Brando’s. The chocolate cake this year was the biggest ever. I thank the staff for giving up their time to attend the dinner.

Our year 10 students celebrated at the Pines training restaurant at Bentley TAFE for their lunch. All had a good time, and the buffet certainly got a workout from our well-behaved and polite students, who were very dapper in their attire. The restaurant was very accommodating, and we will send them an acknowledgement letter for their inclusive approach.

Seeing parents/caregivers visiting the school as part of our year 7 transition program has been fantastic. The parents have been in a few times to meet each other and look around. Some of our current year 7 students talked about their experiences, and the parents were very impressed with them. We will have two full classes of students for next year. The new students will have some orientation sessions soon. Our year 10 students are having their orientation programs at the senior school at that time, so we will use these classrooms—a very exciting time.

This fortnight, we have the year 10 parents/caregiver afternoon, a school board meeting, the final P&C meeting, the year 11 students leave and the WPL appreciation breakfast. Lots of activities showcasing our school as part of the community. As part of our planning, we seek feedback from students, staff, and parents/caregivers. A paper copy of the National School Opinion survey will come home this week – there is a raffle prize of $50 as well. Thanks in advance for doing the survey – much appreciated. We have mailed copies to our year 12 families.

Ms Hickey-Janes, the middle school camp coordinator, is busy sending out as much information as possible about the camp at Ern Halliday in Hillarys. If your son or daughter is a day camper, watch Consent2Go emails about visits to Outback Splash. Please contact your class teacher if you have any questions. It is very important all instructions are followed, and payments are made. Medication is very important. The camp activities look fabulous and should be great fun – everyone needs to slip, slop and slap!

Metronet meeting, bring the whole family for a weekend outing - join us on Sunday, 12 November, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for a free sausage sizzle, kids’ entertainment, and to have your questions answered - Cannington temporary bus interchange (Cecil Avenue, just 400m west of Cannington Station). Our P&C is doing the sausage sizzle! Drinks for sale. Don’t forget the rail line shuts down on November 20th.

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is celebrated throughout the world. This recognition aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. This year's WA theme is ‘My Life, Our Community’ and the City of Canning will be celebrating in style as we extend a warm invitation for you to join us at one of our FREE events. See later in the newsletter for details and a movie from the City of Melville. Look around your local council to see what they have on offer.

The school has some surplus information and communication technologies. We follow all the procedures listed in the DOE Assets and Resources manual, including depreciation schedules. Sometimes, assets have no value and are recycled, but these items still have life left in them. With Christmas coming up, they would make great gift ideas. So we are putting them out to tender for the school community to purchase for very affordable prices - you can also do some Christmas shopping at our famous Market Day in December. The tender details are attached, and if you have any questions, please ring the school office.

So far this term we have been busy preparing for camp, finishing our digital ASDAN portfolios, and preparing items for the ESSN Market Day. We were also excited to learn this week that every student in our class achieved their first IGNITE Award and will receive their certificates at an award ceremony next month.

Recently, our students demonstrated how well they can independently navigate their way around the school when they participated in an Amazing Race-style competition, competing in fun challenges at each given location on school grounds. Congratulations to the winning team -  Adam, Monty and Piper, whose basketball shooting skills helped secure the win.

Our class has also had time to reflect on their first year of high school at CCESC and would like to share some highlights.

So here we are, entering the home stretch of 2023. It has been a busy year settling into high school. We have learnt so many new things, and our independence is increasing all the time.

There is a definite buzz around the middle school; one word on everyone’s lips is “camp”. We are very excited about all the fun activities the staff have planned for us. We are enjoying the pre-camp activities that Ms Janes has prepared for us.

Most of us participated in our first high school outing and attended the ESSN Sports Carnival. It was a great day. Everyone participated very well. Seeing the students having a go and giving it their everything was a pleasure. The sausage sizzle and ice cream van were a huge hit.

We have been learning about prepositional language. Mrs Martlew set us a task to navigate our way around the school to various places following directional instructions. Once we got to each destination, we had to complete a task, answering a question and taking a photo to show where we were. It was so much fun to be out of the classroom doing our learning outside. We even got to say hello to staff around the school we don’t often see.

In HASS, we have been learning about the past and present. We have compared toys, technology, jobs, schooling and family roles. We were shocked to discover what teachers could do to students, such as giving them the ‘cane’ or sitting them in the corner wearing a dunce’s hat. Dunce means stupid. We are all happy that we go to school now and not in the past.

We have been practising our Key Word Signing and were set a challenge to learn at least six signs in one hour. We did well.

We have volunteered for ARC – Animal Rescue Cooperative as part of the Ignite awards. We have been sorting out-of-date medical supplies that cannot be used for people anymore but can be used to assist wounded animals within Australia and Internationally.

We have finalised our ESSN Market Day stall enterprise products to sell to those who attend and will start manufacturing them next week. We hope to see family and friends who can attend and perhaps make a few purchases on Thursday, 7 December. Stay posted for more details to come.

During literacy, students participated in spelling comprehension, investigated our upcoming excursion to Boola Museum, and sequenced step by step during cooking, reading box and form-filling.

During numeracy, students walked around the school and estimated how long it would take them to travel to and from a venue around the school. They also calculated their AIR tokens and then created a column graph to show understanding.

Our students visited the Boola Bardip Museum. They had a blast looking around at various animals and listening to their unique facts. They were well-behaved and followed staff instructions.

During HASS, students researched the state of Queensland. They listed the capital city, population and things to do.

In health, students listed the benefits of exercising and participating in physical activities. They stated their breathing rate had changed. They started sweating and became fatigued.

Our students attended the ESSN Athletics Carnival, which was held at Atwell College. It was a fantastic day, and I was glad to see everyone getting involved and having fun.

We had a busy start to the last term of the year.

Our food truck project is near to the end. Students are excited to share their work with the rest of the school soon. We are keeping it a surprise for now, but a sneak peek into our project is always exciting.

Numeracy lessons are about revising our measurement skills, which we have learned the whole year. In numbers, we are working on our skip counting in 50s, 100s and 200s

In HASS, we have been looking at the school map and places around the school to learn about directions.

We learned how lungs work and how to keep our lungs healthy in our science lessons.

We have also been learning about road safety and personal hygiene in our health lessons.

Students also enjoy gym time every Monday, basketball on Friday afternoons with Robbie from year 10, and bike riding.

Students also participated in the ESSN Athletics Carnival at Atwell College in week 1. It was amazing to see most of them being competitive and enjoying themselves.

Term 4 has gotten off to a flying start.

During week 1, students could attend Atwell College and participate in the ESSN Athletics Carnival. All students did an excellent job trying their best and doing things outside their comfort zone.

In class, students have continued with their literacy and numeracy programs, which have included reading bus and train timetables, navigating Google Maps, reading recipes, using the Woolworths website to find the ingredients, and then attending CANDO to buy the ingredients needed for the in-class independent living skills lesson. At CANDO, students practice matching the picture on the shopping list to the items on the shelf and in the fridge and practice their money-handling skills.

9VL and 9WP also went on an excursion on 31 October near the Canning River. They had a guided tour by an Aboriginal educator who took them down around the river and explained with hands-on examples how Aboriginal people traditionally lived in the bush. Students had a blast! It was a long walk there, and luckily, we could ride the bus back to school.

It has been a busy start to Term 4 for 9WP. The class has completed progressive achievement tests in spelling, grammar and punctuation, and reading. We have also completed all the ASDAN challenges for this year. The students worked very hard to complete all the challenges and demonstrated high creativity with their finished work.

We also had a short excursion to CREEC, which stands for Canning River Eco Education Centre. It is located at Kent Street Weir. The students were challenged to walk the two kilometres to get there, and they did a fantastic job, particularly crossing Albany Highway. It was more impressive as it was a very warm day.

The excursion was part of the year 9 unit on Indigenous studies. Some of the things that students experienced with the Indigenous guide were:

They learnt about traditional ways of collecting food.

The boys group collected sticks, and the girls group dug for food and collected reeds to plait to work together and make a net, a traditional fishing method.

They learned there are 14 tribes in the Noongar nation and that in Perth, we are in Whadjuk country.

They listened to a Dreaming story.

They gathered in a circle for a traditional bush school and had to use their intuition to find a rock in the middle of the circle.

They learnt how to approach the bush carefully during summertime in case of snakes.

The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and we didn’t make them walk the two kilometres back to school. We used the school bus to bring them back due to the heat. Well done, 9WP.

We are having a fantastic term 4. We have been so busy!! The students have already visited more workplaces to experience work in different industry areas. They have gained experience in retail, hospitality, horticulture and animal care. The class has also visited the senior school numerous times to assist them in becoming more familiar with the campus layout, ready for their transition next year. During these programs, the students have spent time with the senior students who have guided them around the campus and joined in group tasks. The year 10 students also have met current senior school staff who have provided fun and exciting challenges such as the “egg drop team building challenge”. 

Another major highlight has been attending the year 10 Lunch at the Bentley Pines Restaurant, with Mrs Anna Sands joining us. Seeing the students enjoy a five-course meal with silver service from the TAFE students was wonderful. We even drank cool drinks in fancy glasses. The students looked fantastic out of their school uniforms.

There are still many things to do as the students' time at the middle school campus ends, which includes transition excursions, a cricket carnival, the ESSN Market Day, a transition parent afternoon tea, middle school camp, year 10 assembly and an award ceremony at the City of Canning to name a few. Although we will be busy, it is a great way to finish the year and our time at the middle school campus.

This year has gone flying past, and it is hard to believe that we are halfway through the final term of year 10. It has been an excellent year in our classroom, with students taking up responsibilities, doing jobs independently, and being respectful and helpful. Their mature attitude and behaviour prove they are ready to move to the senior campus.

The Duke of Edinburgh overnight camp last term was a great success. Students did an excellent job working as a team, putting up the tents, sleeping in them, cooking their breakfast, and packing in the morning. Some of them had never slept in a tent; this was their first experience, and it was great.

On the Friday of week 1, we attended the ESSN Athletics Carnival at Atwell College. There were students from various Education Support schools in the South Metropolitan area. Seeing the students enthusiastically participate in all the events was wonderful. All their hard work paid off when the results were declared, and our school won the overall championship. Though it was a warm day, it was exciting for us all.

The transition to senior school has begun, and we are spending much time on the senior campus. Starting from week 2, all year 10 students and staff join the senior students for breakfast club on Monday and Friday mornings. As per the rostered timetable, we walk over to the senior campus after recess on Tuesday or Wednesday to participate in the fun transition activities, allowing us to meet the staff and students and familiarise ourselves with the senior school campus.

The term ahead is getting busier with lots of events in the coming weeks - The year 10 lunch, transition excursions, middle school camp, and year 10 assembly being some of them.

The students have returned well-rested this term after a well-deserved two-week break. 

At the end of last term, 11CG visited the Education and Heritage Centre in Perth as part of our DFES program. The students enjoyed pretending to drive the fire engine and scaring people walking past the building by throwing a giant-sized pretend spider over the balcony. The firemen in the past did this to scare the training nurses as they walked by!

Most of 11CG have opted to leave school this term in week 6, so they are busily finishing all coursework – and doing a fantastic job! So, for many students, this will be their last newsletter for the year.

We have begun transition with the year 10 students, which has gone very smoothly.   Every Tuesday, 11CG is visited by different year 10 students to engage in transition activities. The egg challenge proved to be a big hit!

Weeks 6 and 7 are our big transition excursions. In week 6, we are going to Point Walter Reserve, where students can kayak, bike ride, fish, and enjoy a nature walk. In week 7, we will be going to Woodman Point. Consent2Go will be out shortly.

It’s hard to believe we are in term 4 already. This year has flown by. In week 6, many of our year 11 students will finish for the year. We wish the best of luck to those students planning to get school holiday jobs.

We have been finishing off a unit on financial literacy this term in mathematics. Work assigned has been dependent on individual ITP goals. Some students focused on counting and using money and debit cards in everyday settings. Others concentrated on shopping online, paying bills, checking their payslip, and knowing who could help with tax advice.

Also, in mathematics, students have been working on their Market Day projects that will be sold in week 9 at the Cannington Exhibition Centre and Showgrounds. Students were responsible for calculating sales costs and profit margins for their items. As an extension task, Winston placed a click-and-collect order for the items needed. His Market Day creations have been independently designed and created - great job, Winston!

In DFES, students have continued the community service project they began last term. They have posted several signs around campus to alert staff and students about the daily UV rating and whether a hat and sunscreen are necessary. Students use the BOM weather app to gather information and update the signs.

Our class has also been hosting year 10 transition groups. Students took visiting students on a tour of the school, enabling them to familiarise themselves with the senior campus layout. Our class has also hosted a number of icebreaker activities to help students feel comfortable in the new environment, and well done to everyone in our class who has put in extra effort to make their guests feel welcome and valued!

During the past month, 12AF has been super busy with the year 12 leavers’ dinner at Brandos, the graduation ceremony, and cooking multiple healthy lunches in preparation for independent living. 

The students had a fantastic evening at Brandos, enjoying delicious garlic bread, pizza or pasta, and chocolate cake.

Design and Technology

Year 7 students have settled into using the workshop space this term. Students have used various machines and hand tools to shape acrylic, Batu and pine into a model Cessna plane. This model has incorporated many skills, such as marking out and wearing PPE. The next model the year 7 students make will be enterprise products for the upcoming Market Day. 7CL will make a rolling ball game, and 7CM will make a wooden coffee cup holder to sell.

Year 8 woodwork students completed their F1 model cars at the end of the last term and are currently working on a model Spitfire plane. The Spitfire model requires the students to use various templates to create the different shaped components. The process requires lots of accuracy, from tracing to cutting out so the pieces fit together like a homemade kit. Students finish this model by choosing a camouflage-type paint scheme of their choice.

8SN enterprise students have been busy processing used drink containers, crushing over 1500 cans during term 3. The students would like to thank Carmel Tearooms and Calco Cabinets for collecting and donating containers for our students to process at school. Students earned $200.00 this week from the containers they have collected.

8MH enterprise students are making a new and expanded range of wooden bird mobiles based on successful sales last Market Day. The students have responded to customer requests and added blue wrens, robin red breasts and kookaburras to their range. Students have been using iPads to reference the correct markings and colours when adding the paint finish. Some of the students in this class are working with recycled HDPE 2 plastic to make Christmas tree decorations. This process involves using biscuit moulds and an oven to form the shapes required.

9VL enterprise students are trying to recycle a range of glass bottles by removing the labels and using a glass cutter in combination with a hot/cold fracturing process to make a range of glasses and vases. It is a challenging process, with many epic failures, as the quality of glass bottles varies greatly. I have watched the students review bottles and determine their suitability for a cutting attempt!

9WP enterprise students have used a Cricuit printer and fabric press to complete two printing jobs for the school. Students printed the Duke of Edinburgh logo on bucket hats for the year 10 students and printed sports bibs for the school’s sporting teams to wear. Production is now in full swing for the next Market Day. Students use the internet and circuit software to create and print designs on various calico bags as sale items. It is great to see students participating in every process step, from design to final presentation.

10SS enterprise students are using donated recycled timber to make various carry crates. It seems to take forever to de-nail and triage the timber before the making phase can begin. Staff admired how students took on the bent, rusty nails and won! About 300kg of timber is now ready for use, a great achievement.

10JL enterprise students are in full production making concrete garden ornaments such as mushrooms and decorated bugs. Students have learnt the importance of mixing the concrete with the correct proportions of sand, cracker dust and cement. It is hard work every week cleaning moulds and preparing the reinforcing materials for each new batch. Students are settling into the jobs that suit their preference in manufacturing, ranging from mixing and forming the concrete to adding the brightly painted finish.

Year 10 woodwork students have just finished their biplane models. To make this model, students have used a wood lathe to form the shape of the fuselage. Students have started making their major model of the year, a footstool with a cushion top. Students will use foam rubber, fabric and a staple gun to construct the cushion. There are many measuring challenges in making a furniture item with four wooden legs sit nicely on the floor without wobbling!

Tradestart students have completed their backyard makeover project. Students had to find out about some of the standard shire regulations that apply to domestic properties and then design and build a model backyard with a patio structure made from timber. Students explored the properties of timber and applied some structural techniques as they built their projects. The last steel project for the year was a garden trowel. Students used a roll-forming machine to shape the blade to hold the soil when digging. Students who have remained in the group following the year 12 students leaving, have opted to spend Fridays creatively making items to sell at Market Day.

Term 4 has seen lots happening in PE, with the whole school attending the ESSN Interschool Athletics Carnival on Friday, 13 October. Not only did the students behave well and have a great time, but we also won!

Our focus this term is cricket, with all classes working on their skills as we build toward the Kalability Interschool Cricket Carnival in week 7 (22nd November).

The year 10 students have continued to apply themselves during recreational pursuits, extending their ‘Rock and Water’, ball games and gym workout capabilities. This term, we’re developing our fishing skills, learning about the gear used, how to fish safely, and how to cast the line with our fishing rods. In the upcoming weeks, we’ll head down to the Canning River to try and catch something, and we’ll also have the opportunity to fish at school camp.

Hello everyone!

I happened to be in 11JW the day before Halloween, so we decided to draw a haunted house together to get into the ‘spirit’ (ha-ha) of things! These paintings will be entered into the ESSN Art Competition later in the term. They look amazing and very scary!!! Good luck, year 11 students!

Last term, the Interest Based Options (IBO) students made a 3-D Character. They all chose their design, and they look fantastic! Workplace Learning

Wow! What a term! It seems we just started the year and are now we are in term 4. 

Even when the time flies so quickly, our students have made amazing progress in their workplace learning placements and future plans. 

We congratulate Isaac Beard, who has gained employment with Australia Post. He attended this workplace for workplace learning and made such a good impression he was invited to apply for casual work after attending the workplace for just one day!

Henry Mippy has worked hard to impress his employer and has been rewarded with being offered paid employment at Bunnings. We look forward to going into the store and asking Henry where to find the products.

We have been approached by employers offering students School Based Traineeships. Congratulations to Turoa Rangiaho-Ransfield. He has worked extremely hard to impress his employer, and we are organising this new step for him.

Xavier Sorenson and Germano Masino have begun a School Based Traineeship. We are confident they will have no problems continuing to impress the employer and complete the TAFE requirements.

Reece Hogarth, Lachlan Nightingale and Monique Park are now well established in their School Based Traineeships and after some nervous starts, they are handling the extra work involved to succeed in these ventures.

A group of year 11 students attend a work readiness program with Essential Personnel. This program will assist them to understand the world of work and further develop practical skills needed when they leave school and begin their work life. They have all attended regularly, and we have been impressed with how they have represented the school throughout the program. Winston Blake, Jaimie Hayes, Khalid Hussein, Dylan Johnson, Daelen Perkins and Jessica Dunn have gained valuable skills to help them in their future.

Congratulations to all our year 10 students who have almost completed their work placement program and have been positive about their new experiences. They are dealing with huge changes, arriving at the senior school on their workdays, going to workplaces sometimes with unfamiliar staff and changing the workplace each fortnight. With all this change, they are still arriving ready to go and happily heading off to work, where they impress employers with their work ethic and positivity. This has been a fantastic venture, and the students now realise they may enjoy workplaces they previously had no interest in.

Years 9, 10 and 11 students are interested in applying for various TAFE courses during 2024. We have applied for the relevant courses and will inform students and parents when TAFE sends the acceptance. 

It is a bittersweet time for us, with the year 12 students making their final farewell to school and continuing their life journey in the broader community. One day, you will look back and think, “Those were the best days of my life”. May all your hopes and dreams come true.

Student Services Update

Mental Health Week: Term 4 ended with our celebration of Mental Health Week across both campuses. Students and staff were offered opportunities to learn more about their mental health and wellbeing and participate in activities that promoted engagement with their peers and the wider school community. 

Highlights from the week included a friendship photo booth, various arts and craft activities, guided mindfulness sessions, a gaming van and a splash tank, where students could soak a staff member while raising funds and awareness of the ‘Beyond Blue’ organisation. The total funds raised on the day was $98.40, and we would like to extend a big thank you to all those who donated and participated.

ESSN Art Competition

Adventurous Art Awards Ahoy! Our students recently enjoyed participating in a visual arts competition hosted by ESSN (Education Support South Network).

The competition theme was Adventure Time, and students were encouraged to use their imagination to create artwork relating to special adventures or exciting holidays.

Congratulations to all our students who participated in this fun event, and special thanks to Mrs McMahon for her amazing skills in teaching the students. The following students received acknowledgments for their excellent artwork.

Thank you to everyone who has paid their contributions—Just a reminder, you can pay your contributions by EFTPOS, direct debit, on our website – parent payments or by payment plan. Please do not hesitate to contact the office to arrange a payment plan. 

All charges for years 11 and 12 students are compulsory. The school cannot subsidise your child’s excursions/camps if charges are not paid (or an approved payment plan has been made) by the end of term 1 each year or until charges are fully paid.

Middle School Parking

Please note that parking is not permitted in the driveway at the school’s entrance, as indicated by the ‘no stopping’ markers and yellow line, as this causes a traffic jam on Wharf Street and is dangerous for students. The disabled parking bays are for people displaying an ACROD sticker only. Your cooperation would be appreciated. Parents are welcome to park down the side of the school near the bus bays. Parents picking up children from the bus bays need to arrive early before the buses.

All visitors must sign in at Reception/Business Centre and receive a yellow visitor label.
