From the Principal's Desk

What an amazing first term we have had. As we have welcomed the season of Djeran, represented by the colour green, we welcome the cooler weather. We look forward to the cooler nights and the dewy mornings. I really love to see the change in the Banksia flowers as they start to bloom, producing nectar food for the birds and small mammals. It is also the time to see red flowers appear on the red flowering gum.  These holidays are a great time to get out into nature and enjoy some bushwalks as the bush around Perth starts to become more aromatic.

I would like to extend my gratitude to all our staff who work so tirelessly for your students and our school. Term 1 can be extremely busy with IEP and ITP meetings, testing, excursions, and many celebrations. This term, we celebrated Harmony Day and Autism Acceptance Day, and year 11s attended the RAC B Street Smart event in the City. We thank everyone for their efforts over the last 10 weeks and look forward to a successful and exciting year.

This term, we say farewell to Jenny Lockyer, who is leaving our school to start a journey in the private sector. We wish her all the best for this new chapter. Judi Hickey-Janes will be replacing her in the year 12 class. The students are very excited to have Mrs Janes back in their class, and I am sure they will make her feel very welcome. We also say farewell to our AIEO Norman Gardner, who is taking the rest of the year on leave. We wish him well on his adventures overseas.

Can I please ask that you show patience and care if you are visiting the senior campus. Parking is limited, and we ask those visitors, including parents and carers, park at the Leisureplex or Lake Street if picking up or dropping students off. This does not apply to parents/carers or students with mobility concerns or if you are picking up an unwell/sick child.  The middle campus community members are reminded not to enter the bus bay when buses are dropping off and picking up students. Please display your ACROD permit in your dashboard if you are parking in the Disabled Bays or either campus. We are hopeful that the timeline for the Cannington Train Station will open as predicted on the 6th June this year.

We had a great turnout of parents and carers at this term's Student Services morning tea. It was wonderful to see parents and carers meeting, asking questions, and creating support networks. I thank our Student Services Team for collaborating on this event and making our school community members feel so welcome.

We invite any parent or carer who would like to be an active member of our school community to nominate to be on our School Board. If you are keen to be part of this, please leave your name at the CCESC Admin desk, and we will be in touch. The School Board meets once a Term on a Thursday morning from 9am – 11am.

We wish everyone a restful break for the upcoming holidays. All staff and students return to school on Monday 28th April. Our School Development Day for Term 2 is Friday, 30th May. Please pop it in your calendars.

Thank you

Angela Whittington

Class Updates

7RW

This term, we have done so many interesting and fun activities.  Our class spent some time remembering what we had done and telling each other what we enjoyed.  Harmony Week was especially interesting for us, and we really enjoyed the different activities that the Student Services team put on for us to do during that week.

We have been reading the story about Charlotte’s Web and looking at all the ways we can be a good friend.  We have made Papier Mache models of spider eggs and used them to create a display to represent what we have been learning about in the story.

Charlotte's Web Art Display

In Woodwork, we have been making a toy finger car and each week, we make the next element for this project.

In Independent Living, we have been looking at Daily Living skills, such as tying our shoelaces, using cutlery, and cooking simple meals. This coming week, we will be making ANZAC Biscuits. During these sessions, we also distribute Food Bank Fruit to all middle school classrooms, which helps us learn how to appropriately visit other classrooms during learning time.

Vegemite and Cheese Scrolls

Literacy sessions have seen us exploring our identity and creating an iBook on our iPads to reflect our likes and dislikes, who we live with and some of our dreams for the future.  This has been challenging for some of us, as we haven’t really thought about these things before.

As part of the Ignite award, we are raising money for a charity by collecting containers for the Containers for Change program.  Each Monday, we spend 45 minutes sorting containers into different categories, removing the lids and straws and getting them ready to take to the depot to redeem for money.  Our class is always happy to receive more containers from home, and if you would like a bag to be able to send them in, please let us know, and we will arrange to have one sent home with your child.

Sorting Containers for Change

The big theme for us this term has been making friends and learning about appropriate ways to interact with our peers, how to manage conflict and apologise when we are wrong.

It has been an excellent term of lots of work, new experiences and developing new friendships both in and out of our classroom.  We are excited about what term 2 will offer us as we continue to settle into the routine and expectations of high school life.

They are completing many Literacy and Numeracy rotations, visiting CANDO to collect our shopping for Friday cooking lessons, working on a project for Enterprise, and learning some AUSLAN during our Zones of Regulation each morning.

It has been fantastic continuing to watch friendships grow in the class. We hope everyone has a fantastic holiday break!

I cannot believe that we are already nearing the end of term 1. It has flown by because we have been so busy.

We have been super busy cutting strips of fabric and making snuffle mats for dogs to sell at Market Day next term. We have also been collecting towels, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, tea towels and t-shirts to take to Shenton Park Dogs Refuge and Cat Haven.

On Tuesday, we went to the Canning River Education Eco Centre, where we had an amazing time conducting experiments on water collected from the Canning River. Irfan and Isabella were lucky enough to find a little red water mite, and Isaiah and Jacob found a micro prawn, and Zahlia, Emma, Paskal and AJ found a Pond Skater.

Then, we ate the delicious muffins we had made in our Friday Maths cooking class. They were so good! On our return to school, we saw the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) perform some music, and our favourite piece was the Mario theme tune. What a great Tuesday!

We hope you have a great holiday and enjoy the rest.

How fast has this term gone? We have had a positive and enjoyable term, during which our class has focused on positive behaviour and appreciating each other for being respectful and kind. Being the start of the year, it has been a very busy term with testing and IEP meetings. A big thank you to all the parents who were able to find time to attend the IEP meetings.

In HASS, we are learning about ANZAC Day and the connection of poppies to this day. As an extension to this lesson, we are making poppy badges with clay to sell for ANZAC Day. The money collected from the sale will be donated to the local RSL Club. Making the poppies has been a long process, from moulding the clay and shaping it to painting and then finally baking it in the kiln. The final step was glueing the pin to the back of the poppy. They are now ready to be attached to the display card and packaged for sale. The hours spent on making the poppies will be added to the volunteering module of our IGNITE award. We are extremely proud of Sarah for using her artistic skills and designing the background picture for the poppy display card. It looks fantastic.

In Art, we are working on our 3D animal project with Paper mâché. We have used newspapers and given shape to our animals by adding ears, tails, and legs to make them look as natural as possible. We are now adding layers of paper mâché to harden and strengthen the animal figure. Once this is complete, we will paint our animals.

Week 7 was observed as Harmony Week at our school. We had various activities organised during recess by our student services team, like big games, harmony feast, staff versus student games, etc. We also watched videos and completed some activities in the classroom to enhance our knowledge and respect different cultures. On Friday of that week, we came dressed in our cultural clothes and ended the day by attending a whole school assembly which comprised of dance and music from different countries that represent our school.

9CL

Real-World Jobs, Fresh Figs, and Feathered Friends!

It’s been an exciting few weeks in 9CL, with students embracing hands-on learning, discovering edible treasures, and showcasing their creative flair.

In Career Education, students have been trialling various classroom jobs that reflect real-world occupations. From roles in communication and organisation to logistics and wellbeing, each student receives a weekly ‘wage’ for their efforts. This initiative gives them a taste of workplace expectations and responsibility. At the end of the trial period, students will have the opportunity to apply for term contracts, with positions offered to the most suitable candidates. It’s been great to see them take initiative and treat these roles with enthusiasm and professionalism.

Meanwhile, an unexpected discovery during morning fitness added a fresh twist to our routine. Mrs Reale spotted what looked like a fig tree growing just across from the basketball court. A little investigation confirmed it—despite its modest size, the tree was indeed a fig tree and already producing fruit! Since then, freshly picked figs have been added to our daily Crunch and Sip, offering a delicious (and nutritious!) surprise straight from nature.

Over in Woodwork, the students have finished crafting their ‘Norman Birds’—adorable wooden creations named in honour of Mr Norman, who designed them. Each student added their own personal touch, and the results were charming. There’s a real sense of pride in the room as these feathered friends come to life.

As always, 9CL continues to embrace learning in creative and meaningful ways. We’re looking forward to seeing what next week brings!

9MS

All the staff and students of 9MS feel that this first term has flown by. We have been very productive and are working hard on our IEP goals.

Career education sessions have been a huge hit with the students. They love using the ‘My Future’ website. We are currently constructing our career profiles. Mrs Martlew did hers with us, and surprise, surprise, it was suggested that she go into teaching!

As a class we have worked on our Class Code of Behaviour and completed our first ASDAN module for the year. This, combined with our PBS sessions with Ms Spadanuda, is having a positive impact on the class. Keep up the excellent work guys!

Mark's Code of Behaviour

Students are getting ready to commemorate ANZAC Day by learning about the Australian values of freedom and respect, and they are making links with their understanding of the history of the three official flags and the symbols/meaning of each flag. Additionally, students are learning to recognise the importance of a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country and when / why these are performed. These lessons and the knowledge developed help students recognise that we are really living in a "lucky country", and they have opportunities to make their communities better each day.

During art sessions, we looked at some of Andy Warhols Pop art. We have constructed our own Pop Art birthday charts, and they look like a colourful treat around the classroom.

We have voted as a class on the enterprise products we will be manufacturing for our Market Day. Stay tuned for more information next term.

In March, we participated in a cricket clinic organised by Mr Hussein. We had a lot of fun developing our throwing, catching, bowling, and hitting skills. Zeva particularly has an exceptionally good eye and arm for bowling.

We have had an exciting and productive term filled with engaging activities, learning experiences, and hands-on projects. From environmental initiatives to career coaching and outdoor adventures, our students have been actively involved in developing new skills and gaining valuable knowledge. Here’s a look at some of the highlights from this term!

Our students enthusiastically participated in Clean Up Australia Day, collecting rubbish all around the school. It was wonderful to see their engagement and commitment to keeping our environment clean while having fun together.

Cleaning up the school

Students have been learning about important emergency signs around the school, including fire hydrants, safety equipment, first aid stations, and fire extinguishers. Understanding these signs is a vital life skill, and our students have done a fantastic job recognizing their importance.

The highlight of the term was the Duke of Edinburgh camp, which had the highest participation from our class. Students had an incredible experience developing teamwork, resilience, and leadership skills while enjoying the great outdoors.

Unpacking food ready for camp

We've been working on understanding rules in the community. Students have explored this topic through presentations, comics, and discussions on rules and consequences, helping them build awareness of societal expectations.

Students creating comics

Our career coaching sessions are becoming increasingly interesting as students learn more about themselves, their strengths, and potential career paths. They have been actively engaged in self-discovery activities and goal setting.

Career Coaching

Textiles class is getting busier as we start sewing our own bags! Students have been developing their sewing skills and learning about different fabric techniques. The creativity and effort they are putting into their projects are impressive!

We had an exciting visit to the Whaleback Golf Course, where students practised their golf skills and enjoyed a fun-filled day outdoors. It was a great opportunity for them to develop coordination and patience while trying out a new sport.

In our maths lessons, students have been collecting and analysing data on student birthdays across the school and electronic device usage. This hands-on approach to data collection has helped them better understand statistics and trends in real-world scenarios.

11CG

Can you believe that we are almost at the end of term 1?  Students in 11CG have been powering through the curriculum and have produced some amazing work.

We are continuing to look at regulating emotions and have discovered some amazing strategies to help us deal with different situations that we may find ourselves in.  We have also been working on making and maintaining friendships and how to do this.  All students are attending a work placement and are obtaining new skills in different work industries.

Some of the year 11’s were lucky enough to go to the RAC Arena and be a part of the Bstreetsmart excursion.  All students were extremely well behaved and engaged throughout the whole experience.  The reenactment of a fatal car accident was quite confronting, and every student learnt several valuable lessons about being a responsible driver.

We are continuing with social games on Thursday afternoons, and all students have shown that they can share, take turns and follow rules.

Term 1 has gone by so quickly!

During Term 1, we have enjoyed being part of the Harmony Day celebrations, completing ASDAN tasks, taking part in practical sport sessions each Monday in HPE, working towards literacy and numeracy goals, attending workplace learning and going to the Friday elective classes.

Harmony Day celebrations

Throughout the past year or so, while we have been at the Sevenoaks campus, we have watched the construction of the new railway line overpasses outside the college.  We have been excited to recently see and hear trains testing out the new train tracks, so we know it is only a matter of time before the trains are back up and running and we can catch the train to and from Cannington Station again.

The highlights of Term 1 in the class, from the student’s perspective, include:

Maddison - I enjoy going to bike riding each Monday and hanging out with my friends.  I enjoyed the assembly and Fun Day, even though we stayed at school.

Summer - I enjoy Music Rocks each Friday and I am excited for the Music Rocks concert this week.  I love WPL at Sparrow Childcare also.

Jayden - The best parts of the term have been swimming each Monday in HPE and the activities during Harmony Day.

Robbie - My favourite parts of Year 12 so far have been attending WPL at Jason Windows each Thursday and going to the horticulture course each Friday.

Edmund - Participating in the Horticulture course each Friday and WPL at Roadbend Sharkies on Thursdays are my most favourite parts of the week.

Oliver - I really enjoy Fridays with Mr Mac. He is my Friday option teacher. Each Friday, I do the ADCAP Sound, Rhythm, and Music course with my friends.

Devyn - The two best parts of Year 12 are doing Mr Mac’s Friday Option class because we get to do broadcasting each week, and each Monday, I do bike riding as my HPE option.

Jai - I enjoy bike riding each Monday and my ASDAN Meal Preparation class on Fridays.  I have made spaghetti bolognese, chocolate chip cookies and dog biscuits for Market Day.

Hannah - I love swimming every Monday and being in the water with my friends.  I also liked making my book about the Busselton Senior School Camp.

Jack - The best parts of my week at school are when I go swimming each Monday at Cannington Leisureplex and when I am catching the bus each Thursday to Workpower for WPL.

Jim - I like being part of the ADCAP music group where we listen to music and participate in other musical and visual art activities.  I also like going to WPL at Workpower in Bentley.

Design and Technology

The year 7 students are continuing to get used to high school and the idea of moving during the day for different subjects and teachers. As students become more comfortable with the workshop and the staff, they are now advancing to some of the more specialised machinery in the woodwork room. They have learnt to use the drill press to make the wheels in their finger cars. They also had a go at painting for the first time, which meant using the aprons and being responsible for cleaning their equipment.

Year 7 finger car

The year 8’s have just finished their coffee cup stands. They are now starting a new project that will help them master the skills of measuring, hammering, and sawing to construct an item that you may see gifted on Mother’s Day!

Year 8 coffee cup holder

The year 9’s are constructing a Mr Norman Birdman. Mr Norman will be leaving us at the end of this term. Mr Norman designed the birdman, so he will leave a small legacy of his presence here at CCESC. Norman has been our AEIO as well as our school workshop technician for several years. We wish Normal well as he heads off to undertake some new challenges. The students have been very artistic and painted some interesting designs on their birds that range from footy jumper colours to some fancy outfits!

Norman's bird

The year 10’s have been practicing their camping skills throughout this term in preparation for their overnight camp. They have come a long way since week one and are now more confident in tasks such as setting up the tent and camp cooking. It was a great camp, with the students participating in all the activities they had been practicing. Students have also been doing some team building activities and learning to rely on each other. In one of the set tasks, students were given some lengths of rope and asked to move the canoe across the lawn without touching the canoe! Now that all the camp preparation is over, year tens will now be doing Woodwork on Thursdays each week.

Tradestart

Due to our senior students being so busy during term 1, students have not been able to begin their metals project work. We have used the days we have had to complete our workshop safety inductions and get some working drawings and mock up models completed. Students have also been using some engineering principles, hot glue guns and some pasta in competition format to build the highest self-standing tower. It was great to see students collaborating and working in small teams of two. The spirit of completion was alive and well as the completion time limit approached.

Physical Education

It’s been a busy Term in Physical Education lessons. Cricket’s been our current focus sport this term, with years 7, 8, 9 and 10 enthusiastically working on their skills during Cricket WA incursions. We had a KALABILITY cricket carnival in week 6, which, again, was very successful. Both our Division 1 and Division 2 teams won most of their games, playing against teams from Kalamunda, Cyril Jackson, Dianella, and Swan View. Our student's efforts and attitude from start to finish were admirable, with Edmund Dann and Ron Labor performing particularly well.

Workplace Learning

Term 1 has been super busy making arrangements for our students attending TAFE and those who have been successful in their School-Based Traineeship applications.

Our students are enrolled in TAFE courses in Animal Care, Construction, Hospitality, Painting and decorating, and supply Chain Operations. All courses are now underway, and our 8 students have been attending regularly and coping well with the extra challenges of learning in an adult learning environment. We have had some positive feedback from the support staff about the student’s level of engagement and enthusiasm at TAFE.

Ryan & Lochlan at Supply Chain Operations

Wah - TAFE Hospitality

We are also happy to report that three students were successful in attaining a School-Based Traineeship with Good Samaritan Industries. Congratulations to Oliver Gallen, Ryan Grant, and Patrick Kargbo! We are looking forward to the Traineeships starting early in Term 2.

At the same time, the Workplace Learning program is in full swing & we continue to be impressed by the feedback received from employers & support workers!  To quote one of our employers who emailed feedback about Year 12 student Edmund Dann:

“I wish our apprentices were so motivated”

“Very impressed with how Edmund followed instructions and picked up on things quickly. He’s a natural”.

“Loving having him on board”

Well done, Edmund!  And well done to everyone in their Workplace Learning program!!

Edmund at Roadbend Motors

Mrs Pears will be taking long service leave in Term 2, Week 5 – 9, but given how well everyone has been doing, we are confident the rest of the Workplace Learning Team will be able to step up to keep the wheels turning while she is holidaying in Europe!

Happy Easter to everyone!  Enjoy a safe break & we’ll see you all back, ready to go again in Term 2.

This term, we celebrated Harmony Day at the Middle School and Senior School campuses. During the celebrations, there was a photobooth, a staff vs. student basketball game, face painting, and foods from different cultures.

Harmony Day celebrations at senior campus

On Tuesday, 1 April, WASO visited the middle school in the BER. It was pleasing to see the students recognising and enjoying the music, spending time relaxing, and appreciating the sensory experience.

On Wednesday, 2 April, was World Autism Understanding Day. Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) students were given t-shirts to design and be creative to celebrate the day.

Our Student Services Team hosted a morning tea on Wednesday, March 19th, at the Middle School to introduce ourselves and share information on the support available for students and families. It was a great opportunity to meet staff, ask questions, and connect with other parents and caregivers.

We were really happy with the response from parents and caregivers. It was fantastic to see everyone attend, and we look forward to hosting further events.

Finally, we wanted to share a resource that may be helpful for parents navigating NDIS.
