Welcome to 2025, the year of the Snake and Bunuru season. We especially welcome all new community members to our school and look forward to working together to make schooling successful for everyone involved. All parents/caregivers are asked to make sure all their details are correct and inform their class teacher or the school offices of any updates.
It has been very satisfying watching so many parents/carers visiting the school for IEP/ITP meetings. Remember that phone or video calls are an option if that suits you. Our goal is to provide opportunities for all stakeholders to be involved, especially the students themselves. Keep an eye out for your class Connect updates, as well as subscribe to our website, social media, newsletters and School Space. If you are unsure as to how to connect give us a call.
The school uses Consent 2 Go to inform families of excursions. Staff work hard to plan excursions and mitigate associated risks. Parents and carers are encouraged to reply online ASAP when invites are sent out. Don’t reply to the email, as that only goes to me. You need to click on the confirm attendance button THEN click whether you are attending or not attending. The whole school Fun Day organised by Mrs Hickey-Janes will be sent out via Consent 2 Go soon.
I would like to acknowledge Mrs Whittington's leadership in organising the senior school camp and managing some significant challenges with exceptional skill and outstanding compassion while on camp in Busselton. Camps are a massive undertaking, and we are one of the few ESC’s that still offers so many. Staff deserve significant acknowledgement for attending camps in their own time.
Our partner school principals have asked me to remind parents/carers about parking on the school sites. I will emphasize that parents/ carers should park at the Leisureplex or on Lake St if picking up or dropping students at our senior campus. This does not apply if the parent or the student has a physical disability/ injury or sickness. The middle school community members are reminded not to enter the bus bay when buses are there. Don’t park in the Disabled parking bays unless the vehicle has an ACROD permit. Both our campuses are under pressure with space currently, and Cannington City Centre and Metronet are adding to congestion.
I hope our community likes the upgrades to our middle school campus – the latest addition of student pictures on the fencing look very good, and the students involved were very happy. Mrs Spadanuda has managed to get a PALS reconciliation grant for Nyungar dual signage around the campus. Huge thanks to our RAP committee for their input. We want our school to be welcoming and culturally safe for all members. Consider joining our Board, P&C and RAP committee if you would like to be formally involved. We welcome all input and would value expertise from our community.
We invite community members to a morning tea update from our Student Services team. Please see the attached invite and pop in for a cuppa. We budget extra resources into this area for our school, almost tripling the staffing we are allocated centrally. Mental health and behaviour support, as well as overall well-being and personal and social capability, are key priority areas in our school.

Class Updates
7RW
Our year has started well, with some great social connections being made amongst our class and across year groups. It has been great seeing the students making connections through recess and lunchtime activities.
Our class has started reading Charlotte’s Web, and this is guiding many of our activities throughout the curriculum, including studying the life cycle of spiders in science and creating spider eggs and webs in art. The theme of friendship in this story is strong and allows us to explore what a good friend looks like.
The students were asked to write a sentence about what they have enjoyed so far about high school.
Ethan - I have enjoyed woodwork; we have been making cars since starting high school.
Yahya - I have enjoyed woodwork and cooking since starting high school. I have loved making sandwiches.
Dylan - I have enjoyed making new friends and hanging out with them at recess and lunch since starting year 7.
Perry - I have enjoyed learning to play foursquare and playing soccer with my friends during brain breaks this year.
Iman - I have enjoyed making a smoothie in cooking since starting high school.
Michael - I enjoy going to woodwork to make my wooden car.
Cooper - I have enjoyed playing soccer with Michael since starting high school.
Rocco - I have enjoyed making friends and playing soccer with them since starting high school.
Syifa - I have enjoyed making mini pizzas in Independent Living since starting year 7.
Ryan - I have enjoyed making smoothies in cooking since starting high school.
Jahmeel - I have enjoyed playing soccer with Ali Saad, Levi, Rocco, and Perry at recess and lunch.
We are looking forward to an excellent remainder of term 1.

Hello everyone from 7VL!
This term, 7VL has been practising their social skills and working on getting to know each other. We spent the first part of this term learning about each other’s favourite things, interesting facts about each other and their personal qualities and skills.
As part of an ASDAN challenge, Literacy and Numeracy lessons have begun exploring foods from around the world and the cost of buying the ingredients. On Fridays, we will be making these recipes in class. During Week Three, students made mochi from Japan! Nearly everyone was brave and tried out a new dish! They collected the ingredients as a class by walking to the Sevenoaks campus and visiting CANDO Woolies. They had shopping lists to find the ingredients on the shelf and ‘money’ to spend at the cash register.

We have also spent a lot of time talking about enterprise, art, and science. One of our Art projects and our science theme for the term, lifecycles, have been woven into Enterprise. During Enterprise, students run a business. They have the opportunity to showcase the products they have made and use real-world shopping skills during an event called Market Day, the date of which is unknown at this stage.

7VL has had a fantastic start to their transition at high school!

Wow! Wow! Wow! We have been at school for a month already. Where has the time gone?
Our students have worked hard this month, and I am still incredibly grateful to be their teacher. I am looking forward to some exciting times and events. We have Fun Day on Friday, March 14th, at Kalamunda Water Park to look forward to, and then we have an excursion to the Canning River Eco Education Centre on Tuesday, April 1st. Not, it’s not an April Fools!
8AF students have had fun getting to know our lovely new student, Paskal, who has ventured all the way from Victoria. We have had a good time singing some maths multiplication Reggae style songs, playing multiplication games, reading various fiction and non-fiction texts, writing our own stories, and completing assessments in literacy and numeracy with Mrs Janes.
In maths cooking on a Friday, we made the most delicious sugar-free, egg-free biscuits, a stunning vegetable soup, and a face salad.

We have also done some lovely drawings using watercolour pencils and made some posters for Shenton Park Dogs’ Refuge and the Cat Haven as part of our community and volunteer aspects of the Ignite Award. We are collecting donations of sheets, blankets, towels, pillowcases, and tea towels. So, if anyone has any they would like to donate, please can you send them in with your child? Thank you.
We have had the most amazing first few weeks.

Term 1 of Year 8 has started beautifully in our classroom. All the students returned after the holidays with lots of stories to share. In week 1, we updated our height chart in the classroom, and the students were surprised to see how much taller each one had grown over the holidays.
We have spent the initial weeks of this term reviewing our classroom rules. While creating the rules, we all agreed that observing rules within the classroom helps create a safe learning environment. We have displayed the rules in the classroom and are mindful of reading and following them all the time.

We have also discussed deciding our class enterprise for this year. As a class, we came up with many interesting ideas and chose our project by voting for the most popular one.

Enterprise class discussion
Interest-based option classes are held every Wednesday after lunch. This term, we had a variety of options to choose from, such as Cricket, Karaoke, Sensory activity, Minecraft, Lego, Cooking, and a Silent disco. IBO groups started in week 2, and we enjoyed our chosen activity with students from the other year's groups.

On Thursday, 20th February, our class participated in an e-safety virtual classroom. The topic was “Be an e-safe kid”. The webinar was very informative and helpful. It helped us refresh our memory as well as learn new things that we were not aware of.

Fun Day at Kalamunda Water Park will be held on Friday, March 14th. We are excited about it and look forward to having fun in the pool and water slides.
News and notices will be communicated via the Class Connect page. Please check regularly for updates. I look forward to a wonderful year working together as a team.

We've had a positive start. All students are happy to return to school; most are keen to learn new things and catch up with their friends.
This year, we will focus more on independent living skills, career education, community awareness, and travel training. Students are also excited to learn through individual project-based tasks catering to their interests and lines of enquiry.
We have been learning about our weird and wonderful world this term, creating our own Freaky Friday Science Files. So far, we’ve observed a juvenile tarantula in its burrow (safe in his concealed glass home) and learned about the different animals that produce milk for human consumption. We couldn’t believe it when we discovered scientists could extract milk from cockroaches!
In Phys. Ed students are training for the upcoming ESSN Cricket Carnival, and Mr Arrantash has given students the choice of which sailing vessel they would like to make in Woodwork. I’m looking forward to seeing the cruise ship designs!
We’ve also started working together as a team to help with the everyday running of our classroom, simulating occupational roles commonly found in the workplace. Monty did a sterling job as our receptionist, Adam as our ICT Technician and Xander as our Student EA. Seeing all students pitch in to help when our cleaners were away was also impressive. Keep up the great work, 9CL!

Congratulations to our students on a fantastic start to the school year. Our class has returned to school eager to learn and improve in many ways.

Diesel happy to be back at school
In our class we are revisiting the school’s Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) matrix and ensuring we understand how A.I.R (Achievement, Independence, and Respect) Tokens are distributed. We have started with lessons on “doing my best” and “being on time.” These are excellent life skills that will help students beyond their schooling lives. Students have been eager to increase their A.I.R Tokens, are trying hard with classroom activities, and are returning from breaks on time. This is fabulous! We will continue with lessons on “actively listening” soon.

Mark independently typing
We have been working on our Class Code of Behaviour as a team. Everyone has had some input, and it will be displayed shortly once we finalise some things. We remember aligning this with our three PBS areas: achievement, independence, and respect.

Ammar and Elena are working on the Code of Behaviour
Year 9 students are learning about Australian flags, symbols, Indigenous histories, and cultures. Early on this term, they had an opportunity to locate representations of Indigenous art, words and cultures around our school and took photos for our Connect page. The display of the pictures looks so colourful and bright. Please take the time to check it out. In the near future, more representations of Indigenous (Noongar) words will be displayed at our school so that students can engage with and learn more about the importance of language.
The students are enjoying sinking their teeth into career education. It makes them think about the variety of skills required to obtain specific jobs. Identifying a chosen career path has been difficult for them, but that is okay. This is about trying new things to learn what we like and do not like. Many of our literacy and numeracy sessions are based around this. The students are broadening their vocabulary by learning the language of work.
Health and ASDAN sessions have seen us talking about puberty and focusing on all the changes happening to us physically, emotionally, and socially. Bottling everything up can be challenging, not talking about it. The students are managing this topic with a newfound maturity.
In art, the students have been learning about Pop art and the incredibly famous artist Andy Warhol. They have just about finished their Pop Art Birthday Charts. They are looking amazing and will look fabulous once everyone is up.
This year, we welcome a new student to our class. We wish Zeva and her family all the absolute best here at CCESC.

It’s been a great start to the term, and I'm thrilled to have all the students back at school.
A few highlights from Dem 3.
Some of our year 10 students attended a career taster at Thornlie Tafe. They decorated their canvas board with sandpaper, water-based paint, a heat gun, and basting tape. The students had a fantastic time and enjoyed working with Tim (a Tafe tutor).

Welcome to a new school year! Our students have returned with excellent attendance, enthusiasm, and a well-rested energy, ready to take on new challenges and opportunities.
Students actively participate in the Duke of Edinburgh program, developing valuable life skills, teamwork, and independence through exciting outdoor and camp activities.
Students have also been learning to raise and lower the flags with Mr. Arrantash, taking on this critical responsibility with pride.

Getting ready to raise and lower flags
Students actively participate in Recreation Pursuits with Mr. Pastell, where they learn the rules and strategies of lawn bowling, developing precision and teamwork. They also hone their golf skills through practice, improving coordination and technique.

Welcome to our new year 11’s. It has been a hectic start to the term, with an excursion, an incursion and the senior school camp all in the first four weeks.
In week two, we went to Cottesloe Beach and participated in a beach safety program held by Surf Life Saving WA. We learnt how to stay safe both in and out of the water. The sun came out just as we were leaving!
Week four was hectic! On Monday, trainers from St John’s came to the school to teach us about the basic principles of CPR. Everyone joined in and received a certificate at the end of the session. Tuesday saw us heading to camp in Busselton, where we visited caves and the jetty, went to the movies, and participated in many activities. There were plenty of tired bodies getting off the bus on Friday afternoon.
We have also been busy with classwork, including English, Maths, and Keys4Life. A few excited people look forward to passing their Keys4Life certificate and getting their learner's permit at the end of the year.

Term 1 has been an incredible time for us to get to know one another, build relationships, and establish new friendships. The students have already immersed themselves in academics (Literacy and Numeracy), Keys for Life (driving training), cooking, first aid (CPR), and Sport and Life skills theory. They've also been busy preparing for our 3-day camp, working out outfits for the 70s disco, participating in their chosen Friday electives, visiting Cottesloe beach, and some have even started working off-campus. All of this has been accomplished in just the first three weeks, making it a busy and productive start to the term.

2025 is well and truly underway in the 12JL class. Students have already had an educational excursion to Cottesloe Beach, taking part in a first aid course and the Senior School Camp in Busselton. The students have received their Year 12 Leavers Jackets, yet most are waiting for the weather to get a little cooler before they start wearing them. Setting personal goals and putting plans in place to assist with the transition to life after school are all top priorities in the classroom.

The best parts of school this term include:
Robbie – I enjoyed attending the Busselton Senior Camp, developing my cooking skills further and attending WPL, which I hope may lead to paid work.
Summer- I had such a great time at camp. I love my workplace in the childcare industry, and I really like my Friday Option Music Rocks.
Oliver – In year 12, I am exploring my options for this year and considering career and study options I may pursue once I have completed Year 12.
Maddison - I enjoyed the Busselton Camp and the beach excursion, and I am hoping to have a fantastic final year of school.
Edmund – I enjoy participating in the Horticulture course each Friday. I like doing gardening work and learning about plants.
Jack - I had a great time at camp and loved participating in all the fun activities in Busselton. I also enjoy going to Workpower at Bentley each Thursday for WPL.
Hannah - I have cooked burgers and spaghetti bolognese for my Friday ASDAN cooking elective. I enjoy catching the bus to Workpower each Thursday. I work hard at Workpower, ensuring the correct labels are on the packaging.
Jayden - I had a great time at camp. I hope to have a successful WPL, which may help me gain a school-based traineeship or paid work. I have almost completed my Learner’s Permit requirements, and then I will move on to driving with P Plates.
Jai - I had an awesome time at the Busselton Camp. I am enjoying my WPL at Alinea each Thursday. On Fridays and during class time this term, I have cooked burgers, cheese toasties, and ANZAC biscuits.
Devyn - I had a great time at the Busselton Camp. WPL is great. I hope to complete my driving lessons soon so I can move on to my P Plates, and I am considering which TAFE courses I may wish to take in the future.
Jim – I have had a great time in Year 12 this year. I loved going on camp to Busselton and going to Workpower in Bentley each Thursday for WPL.

Year 7 woodwork students have spent the first few weeks completing their workshop safety inductions and getting used to the high school processes of changing rooms during the school day to work in various option areas. They have also begun to use our machinery. There is a lot to learn about operating bench drills and wearing safety gear. Workshop staff have built a custom wheelchair platform which enables Syifa to join in with her classmates working at the bench and taking her turn at operating machines.

Year 7 Drilling

Syifa trying out the wheelchair platform
Year 8 students have been learning about commercial shipping vessels that service the WA industry. After looking at the various types of vessels, they have been honing their shipwright skills by making and decorating look-alike models. Students were asked to choose a vessel type and get to work.
Year 10 students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh bronze level award are working very hard to upskill themselves in preparation for their overnight camp at school in week 7 of this term. Students spend one session a week learning how to use camping equipment such as tents and self-inflating air mattresses. They are also spending one session a week honing their camp cooking skills by practising to prepare various breakfast options using camp cooking equipment so they are ready to cook up a storm for breakfast on their camp.

Tradestart has just got underway for the year following an allowed period of option swapping to ensure senior students were happy with their Friday option choice for the rest of 2025. Students have completed some safety and induction processes before beginning their project and theory work.
Tradestart students formed a collaboration with our Agrifoods students this week to place approximately 35 cubic metres of mulch in and around the school grounds. It was great to see our students undertaking real work and seeing the fruits of their labour. The gardens around the school looked transformed and refreshed in just one day. I would like to give a big shout out to all the students and staff who worked in teams to get this mammoth job done. Lars and Patrick worked tirelessly all day, following the job's progress until the very end. Well done!

Physical Education
The first 3 weeks of school have been busy, getting to know the new Year 7’s. Already, we have been conducting skills tests to assess student’s capabilities, working on our cricket skills in preparation for the interschool cricket carnival in week 6 (Wednesday March 12th). The year 10’s Recreational Pursuits program has started with “gym workouts”, and they’ve begun practising Golf at school. We will be looking to go on driving range excursions by week 7. Classes have also had fun playing simple games like Dodge and Poison Ball. I’ll continue to assist classroom teachers with delivering their Health programs, including HPE theory lessons to year 11 and 12’s. The students have been keen to participate, despite the extreme heat, with most classes conducted in the BER to avoid direct sunlight. I am looking forward to another productive and fun filled year ahead!

Workplace Learning
2025 has started with a bang! We have 5 students returning to Year 13 to complete their School Based Traineeships & 7 students successful in their applications for various TAFE courses – congratulations!
A couple of the TAFE courses have already begun, and the remaining will begin next week. We have a couple of different courses on offer this year, including Construction and Hospitality. The students are both excited and nervous about what lies ahead of them but can be reassured that a support person from school will meet them at TAFE to assist and guide them through.
We also have 6 students who are applying for School-Based Traineeships this year. These students have all shown a high degree of patience while their applications are being assessed, and we hope to have some positive news for them very soon!
Plus, almost every student has a Workplace Learning Placement set up, with some students travelling as far as Shenton Park and Bibra Lake for their work! Students have been reliably attending their workplace on their workplace learning day, and we have received amazingly impressive feedback from both employers and support workers! Well done, everyone!! We are working very hard to secure the last few placements so that everyone has the opportunity to gain this valuable experience.

We can already see the benefits of the Industry Taster Program our new Year 11’s participated in last year as they jump straight into Workplace Learning, already aware of what to expect & what is expected of them! We will look to work with this year’s Year 10’s in Semester 2 to give them the same opportunity to experience a variety of workplaces before they transition to Senior Campus.

RAP
Our school has achieved two significant milestones over the summer holidays. Firstly, our school’s first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP – Reflect) was approved and published in early January. This is just one step towards reconciliation and there will be many opportunities for our school community to create culturally safer spaces for all students, parents / carers and other stakeholders. You are all welcome to join the RAP Working Group (committee) to support reconciliation initiatives in our school. Together we can make a real difference in our communities. Please contact me – Pat Spadanuda pat.spadanuda@education.wa.edu.au
Secondly, our school received funding via the Partnership Acceptance Learning Sharing (PALS) grant process, and this will see a significant project get underway. We plan to have dual language signage in our school and have recently welcomed Noongar Language Consultant Sharon Gregory to consult onsite with a team, including City of Canning representatives and parents with students. The signs will be a way to engage and encourage our students to respect the language of the Traditional Custodians of this land. This project ties in with many deliverables in our RAP. We are so pleased and look forward to showing you all the installed signs soon in the school year.

Parents should enter the school from Cecil Avenue, turn left at the traffic lights onto Sevenoaks Street, turn left into SSC, and turn left into the long carpark.
The CCESC Business Centre is the brown brick building on the left side of the car park. Drive over the yellow sensor to leave the campus, and the boom gate will open automatically.
