It’s Birak, traditionally known as fire season. The temperatures have certainly started to rise this week. We were incredibly lucky with the weather at our recent middle school camp at the Swan Valley Adventure Centre. Mrs Foyster organised a fantastic camp, and I would like to acknowledge her and the staff who attended and made it such a success. I heard great stories of students trying many things for the first time- so brave!

Congratulations to Patrick Kargbo, who won the Year 10 ESC Endeavour Award presented at the joint CCC and CCESC Leavers Assembly. The award also came with a generous prize from the Hon Bill Johnston MLA, who has retired from parliament. We thank him for supporting our school and wish him well in the future.

After the Leavers Assembly, we were visited by our very famous ex-student Kayleb Dockary. Kayleb is one of the stars of the ABC television series The Headliners, which airs every Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. He told me it was a very emotional experience and something he would never forget performing in front of so many people at the Mundi Mundi Bash. His latest single is on Spotify – search for Kayordinated – Together with Family. Here is a picture of Kayleb with rock legend Tim Rogers. He also made the front cover of the Department of Education Ed- email – this time, the picture was with someone else.

Our Year 10 assembly was held at the senior school gym, and many awards were handed out to deserving students. It was lovely to see the PowerPoint of the Year 10 students as they matured from little Year 7s. I also loved the faces of the students who were lucky enough to win one of the hampers kindly donated by the Riverton Baptist Community Church via our Chaplain, Mr VW.

Mr Arrantash and Mrs Lockyer organised for the Mayor of Canning, Mr Patrick Hall, to present the Duke of Edinburgh and Ignite Awards at the Cannington Leisureplex. Unfortunately, I could not attend, but it is always a great event, and the staff are so proud of the students. It was lovely to see smiling parents as well. The students in years 7, 8, and 10 have enjoyed participating in the program.

You will have been sent student progress reports home online. If you would like to discuss the reports, please contact your class teacher. Students should be thrilled with their reports and progress, and I am sure they acknowledge the hard work of staff in helping them achieve their goals. I want to thank all the classes for their regular Connect Notices to keep families updated.

Special mention was also given to Mrs Benstead for her work on the school website and to Mrs Whittington for all her work on social media. We try our best to celebrate the success of our school and, most importantly, the students. The new parent handbook is available on the website – click on the Parents/Caregivers tab and then click on School Information. Feedback welcome.

I want to thank our school board for all their work over the year. To Emma, Jude, Jenny, Zena, Paula, Eleanor, Mark, Angela, and Tanya, your expertise, enthusiasm and considered views have been key drivers in our school’s growth and development. We will enter a new business planning phase in 2025, which is exciting. I look forward to working with you to develop our plans and demonstrate our accountability. You certainly represented our school well during the public school review.

Our staffing for 2025 is nearly finalised. Mr Preece is moving to another school, and I cannot confirm his replacement yet. We managed to secure a teacher, which is great. The supply of teachers, especially in Education Support and Secondary schools, is very tight. I want to thank Warren for his time with us.

Most staff have worked additional hours this year, so the school office will close at noon on Friday, December 13th. It will reopen on January 29th, 2025. May I wish everyone in our school community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Have a safe, restful and enjoyable school holiday break.

Class Updates

7AF

It has been a busy term, with students focussing on their IEP’s. There has been a constant buzz of excitement as we prepare for camp—choosing a movie for movie night, selecting a theme for the disco, and reading a social story about the camp so the students know what to expect each day.

We continued with our weekly maths cooking session, making various delicious dishes. We made pizza dough, pizzas, garlic naan bread, vegetable curry, macaroni cheese, and chicken curry. We have been measuring using cups and scales, learning about cooking hygiene, and learning to finely chop safely.

We have had two basketball clinics where the students learned valuable techniques to dribble and shoot the ball.

Additionally, we had the opportunity to attend a WASO concert at the Sevenoaks Gym in week 6. The students loved listening to the musicians play some well-known tunes on their instruments, joining in with the chorus of a beautiful story with the background noises and music performed by the artists on their instruments, and clapping and singing along to some familiar pieces of music, such as Let it Go from Frozen.

Dayon, Isabella and Jacob enjoying the concert

We also had a guest speaker from RSPCA WA visit our school and deliver a presentation about the RSPCA's role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals. The students engaged in the sessions by asking and responding to the speaker's questions.

In IBO, students had fun participating in various activities of their choice. They enjoyed working with students from other classes and other year groups. Dayon absolutely loved Bootcamp, where he learned how to use GPS and cook food when camping in the bush. Pavani and Isaiah had so much fun singing and dancing in karaoke, whereas Jacob enjoyed the peace and quiet of the Lego class.

Congratulations to all the students for completing their Year 7 journey. It has been an incredible ride of fun and learning.

We wish you all a fantastic holiday.

Annie Foyster and 7AF

It has been a busy term, with students working hard to achieve their goals in all learning areas. In literacy and numeracy, students have been working in small groups within the classroom, focussing on their IEP’s. Like all other terms this term, there have been many activities alongside classroom learning. We have had two basketball clinics recently, and students have all enjoyed the sessions and learned some valuable techniques for dribbling and shooting the ball. We have also had the opportunity to attend a WASO concert at the Sevenoaks Gym in week 6. Students enjoyed listening to the musicians play some well-known tunes on their instruments. They loved listening to a beautiful story made lively with the background noises and music performed by the artists on their instruments.

We also had a guest speaker from RSPCA WA visit our school and deliver a presentation on 15 November. It was interesting to hear some facts about the RSPCA's role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals. The students engaged in the sessions, asking the speaker questions and giving fantastic responses.

RSPCA school visit

In IBO, students have fun participating in different activities alongside students from other classes. Some of the activities chosen by the students are Boot Camp, cooking, Sensory, Lego, and Chess.

Sensory Group

Swan Valley Adventure Camp is fast approaching, and students anxiously await the event. They are getting ready by researching facts and preparing in advance.

Congratulations to each of the students for completing their Year 7 journey. I wish all the families a happy festive season and a fantastic holiday.

8CL

We have had a very busy and productive 2024. To end the year, we created autobiographical videos using iMovie on our iPads.  We achieved this by entering our data into the Artificial Intelligence program on Canva to create a script. Then, we used this to add a personal narrative to our movies, along with music and photos of ourselves at important, personal milestones.

To conclude our Measurement program with Mr. Arrantash, we followed a building plan to create a granny flat using the Minecraft Education program. This was a fantastic opportunity for everyone in our class to participate in a role reversal, where the students were the ‘experts’. Seeing less confident students beam with pride as they shared their crafting tips and tricks with classroom staff was incredibly encouraging.

Measurement program

Students also had fun in science predicting and recording results for making a cake without various key ingredients and observing the change that occurs to different items when left soaking in water overnight.

Well done, 8CL. Keep up the great work next year as you begin your next school chapter in Year 9.

8MS

It has been an epic term with absolutely no room to move. Many events and activities extended students' academic, personal, and social capabilities. Many students (and staff) are exhausted, so hopefully, the holidays will bring opportunities for recovery and rest.

Highlights this term included the Basketball Clinics with Denzel Jackson from the Wildcats. Students enjoyed working with the other year 8 class and learned valuable basketball skills.

Another highlight was in week 6, when students were delighted to experience the string quartet from WASO for another consecutive year. The musicians entertained and enthralled the students with their outstanding performances from Mozart to Beethoven.  It was an excellent hour of audio cultural delights.  What a beautiful sensory experience for our students.

A big focus for the term was getting ready for camp. Students completed their own social stories to alleviate anxiety about being away from home. They reviewed the luggage requirements and prepared by watching Mrs Foyster's awesome PowerPoint presentation.

Academically, students continued to be challenged and worked diligently to progress towards their literacy and numeracy goals.  Some students used the iMovie app on their iPads to create a 2024 movie reel highlights.  Check them out on Connect.

Another highlight this year has been the reciprocal teaching and learning opportunities presented in our classroom. One of the best parts of teaching is learning new skills, and the students contribute to our professional learning. In numeracy, some students shared a website with exciting statistical data that aligned with their goals. We continue to use this website for fun and for learning, too.

Science lessons have been hugely received, and the students have had a lot of fun. The biggest hits have been running an inflated balloon through a flame without it bursting and creating Diet Coke Geysers. All of the students were enraptured, and their smiles said it all!

Balloon experiment

It's that time of year again when some of our friends say goodbye for extended periods or only for a short while.  For any students moving on, we wish you good luck!

We want to thank our classroom staff for their energy and commitment to our students.  We could not do this without you all. You are truly amazing and go above and beyond all the time.

Happy and safe holidays to our parents/carers and students.

See you in 2025!

Charline Martlew and Pat Spadanuda

9MH

It’s been a great year, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being the 9MH teacher. I was impressed by our students' resiliency and willingness to take on new challenges. To my wonderful staff, thank you for your hard work, patience, and always having a Cando attitude.

Here are a few highlights from this term.

Our students visited Kings Park. We learned about the history of Kings Park- the indigenous name is Karra Katta. We walked around the park, and our excellent instructor, Kiely, shared the vast number of plants and how versatile and valuable they are to the Indigenous Australians. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to navigate the city using Transperth services. There were many sore legs, but it was a great excursion.

Kings Park excursion

During Indigenous studies, students researched some critical facts about Adam Goodes and identified what he did to become the 2014 Australian of the Year.

Indigenous studies

In numeracy, students recognised the different Australian coins and notes. They also identified the number before and after. Finally, students identified fractions when presented with a 2D shape.

Numeracy fractions

In art, students built a vehicle, truck and a home using paper models.

This is the year's last newsletter, with lots to share from the previous few weeks.

The students have made impressive gains this year, especially in increased confidence and participation while on our school camp. A big high five goes to Kyle for joining us at camp and Gianni and Joachim for participating in the Flying Fox activity during the school camp.

Fun at camp

In week 5, Mitchell, Beau, and Emily visited South Metropolitan TAFE and participated in the Animal Care Taster Course. The students showed great enthusiasm during the course, which is an excellent start for entering year 10.

Animal Care Taster Course

In week 6, year 9 students visited Kings Park on a Kaart Koomba excursion. Students learnt about the various plants and their importance in Aboriginal culture.

Students have been working on special end-of-year art project gifts this term. Our final products are ready to be sent home.

We will be using Coles and Woolies paper bags to wrap the gifts.

Joachim finished his taco truck project. It looks amazing

Joachim’s taco truck

Our bread experiment ended after 25 days. Our room started to stink, so we had to throw all the bread in the bin.

10VL

Hello, parents, and welcome to the final 10VL newsletter of the year!

The final moments of Year 10 have been filled with activities.

Week Six: Workplace Learning finished, and students attended an excursion at Woodman Point, where the weather was perfect!

CD fishing at Woodman Point

Yusuf at Woodman Point

Week Seven: Transition activities happened on Monday and Thursday, during which students spent much time becoming familiar with their classroom for next year when they are in Year 11.

Week Eight: Transition activities concluded, and Year 10’s celebrated with their Year 10 Celebration Lunch.

Year 10 Celebration Lunch at Sebastian's

Week Nine: Middle School Camp. What a blast! From the flying fox, swimming pool, tarp slide, obstacle course, movie night, camp disco, and a visit to Hoyt’s Midland to watch Moana 2! What a fantastic time.

10VL hopes everyone has a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday!

Vanessa Laudehr

10WP

Hello, parents and carers.

Well, we almost made it to the end of the year. The 10WP class has made some great improvements in their learning journey, and all seem eager to go to the senior campus. I wish all the students the very best for next year. Just a note: I will be leaving next year to work at another Education Support school. It has been a pleasure to get to know you all and teach your children over the last three years. Thank you for your support.

This term, the students completed their 20 hours of Workplace Learning and successfully achieved the goals that they set out to achieve. Watching them independently work at each business has been great, and the effort they put in was fantastic.

Both 10WP and 10VL have had some fun during Recreational Pursuits this term. They went to Kent Street Weir to try fishing. They learnt how to cast a rod, and those brave enough tried their hand at baiting the hooks with prawns.

Another highlight this term was the Year 10 presentation lunch held at Sebastians in Victoria Park. It was good to see that most students dressed up for the occasion. The students had the choice of meal and drinks and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which was well deserved for all their hard work this year. A big thank you to all the staff who organised the event.

Fame and Nicholas at the celebration lunch

I wish every student the best of luck for next year.

We have had a fantastic Year 11 in 2024.  We can’t believe that the year is almost over and that soon, these students will be Year 12s in their final year of school.  Some highlights of the end of Term 4 include attending Woodman Point for a transition excursion, going to the Groove Train Restaurant for the Year 11 Lunch, continuing with Workplace Learning each Thursday and Senior School Options each Friday.  I am sure Jayden, Devyn and Oliver would also add that being able to complete school at the end of Week 6 was a bonus.  The rest of the students are completing school until the end of Week 10.

YUM!!

These are the highlights of the past few months, according to the students:

Robbie – doing Trade Start each Friday, going to the Groove Train for the Year 11 lunch and cooking on Tuesday with Mrs Whillier when I made the macaroni cheese, and protein pancakes.

Maddison -  I have enjoyed visiting the Music Rocks group and the Food Preparation option groups on Fridays. This will help me with my Senior School Elective choice for Year 12. I love hanging out with my friends and will miss them in the holidays. The Year 11 lunch with students from each Year 11 class was so much fun at the Groove Train.

Summer – I love attending my work placement at the Y Childcare Centre in Cannington.  I like to pat young children on the back to help them get to sleep and play with the children.  I liked visiting the Music Rocks Elective on Friday.  The Year 11 lunch at the Groove Train was so much fun.

Edmund – I liked going to the Woodman Point Transition excursion with the Year 10s.  Fishing was my favourite activity at Woodman Point.  I also enjoy attending GAP (Greyhounds as Pets) each Thursday for workplace learning.

Hannah – I liked doing the beach walk and swimming activities when I was on the Woodman Point transition excursion.  I enjoyed having a big pizza for lunch at the Groove Train Year 11 Lunch.  It was so yummy.

Jai – When I was on the transition excursion at Woodman Point, I had lots of fun swimming in the water and collecting shells on the beach walk.  I had fish and chips at the Groove Train Year 11 Lunch, they were delicious.  I have worked hard to type my animal care book this term.

Jim – At the Year 11 Lunch I had fish and chips, they were so yummy.  I have also enjoyed going to Workpower for WPL.  At WPL, I complete packaging tasks such as assembling fly traps for shops to sell and placing nutritional fact labels on long-life food products.

Jack – At the Woodman Point Transition Excursion, I had a great time on the beach walk.  I collected many shells and had a wonderful time swimming in the water.  It was so much fun.  Each Thursday, I catch the Transperth bus to Workpower in Bentley.  At Workpower, I have placed food labels on packets of chips and smarties and constructed packing boxes.

Happy Holidays

Congratulations to all our students for working well in all activities this year. They are wonderful young people, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements and personal development. We all enjoyed the Year 11 Lunch at the Groove Train restaurant at Carousel.

Waiting for lunch

Well done to all students for their fantastic effort and great work this year.

Michael McGoldrick and Staff

Design and Technology

Year 7 Woodwork students have made a naughts and crosses game. The naughts and crosses were burnt into the timber using hot branding irons that produced lots of smoke and flame! When the project was complete, students challenged staff to a game that resulted in many wins for the students! Students have also completed a coffee cup holder designed to hold six standard coffee cups. This project required students to test their chiselling skills using a Dado joint to form the stand component.

7AF Cupholders

Year 8 woodwork students have completed a wooden locomotive. This project involved using a wood lathe to form the boiler and a drill press fitted with a wheel cutter to make the wheels. Hand tools were used to create the two Dado joints that are a part of the cabin assembly.

8MS Trains

Year 9 Woodwork students were given a choice of models they could make. They could make a car or an army tank. These models require students to use wood rasps and other hand tools to shape the components to match the teacher's samples. Once the components were knocked into shape, students used battery-powered palm sanders to create a smooth finish. They have also tried making a cake slice from sheet acrylic. Once again, this project required careful shaping and polishing by hand before using an acrylic bender to form the finished shape.

Lily’s completed car

Year 10s working towards their bronze level Duke of Edinburgh have been busy completing their final challenges. Students have fabricated bird perches out of bush wood and recycled timber, collected used fabric, sewn marsupial pouches, and made bat boxes as part of the service section of the award. Mr A recently visited Kanyana Wildlife Hospital to donate the items, which were gratefully received, with some being put into service immediately!

Completed items for Kanyana Wildlife Hospital

Students have also been completing their Adventurous Journey section of the award. They have been learning about topographical maps and how contour lines depict the shape of the land. They have also constructed an emergency shelter and used handheld GPS units to find waypoints on an oval near the school. Students were also introduced to the phonetic alphabet and tried operating handheld UHF radios in a radio net.

Emergency shelter

Students have also learned about critters that bite that they may encounter in WA. They completed hands-on first aid training that involved using the new snake bite bandages and ice packs to soothe various bites and stings. Students have also completed a discussion session on creating a bushfire action plan that included a list of things to pack during an evacuation.

IBO Boot Camp: This week, students cooked and tried a dehydrated version of spaghetti bolognese from a local camping shop. Our student panel of food critics rated this meal a majority 8 out of 10! Students also participated in a team-building activity in which they were tasked with safely moving a container of toxic waste out of a rope circle without entering or spilling it. After a few attempts, some communication and teamwork slowly developed, and the community was saved!

Rope circle exercise

Tradestart students have completed small units in electronics, domestic plumbing and car maintenance.

The electronics unit included a range of skills, such as stripping electrical wire, making connections using crimp lugs, and soldering. These skills were used to make a series of simple circuits using lights, buzzers, and LEDs (light-emitting diodes). There was plenty of troubleshooting involved in the creation of electrical circuits!

Creating electrical circuits

Students have learnt about basic car service items in the classroom and completed a checklist on a vehicle. They also practised jacking up a car safely and had a go at changing a tyre. (Please see our reel on Facebook of our students at work)

Car maintenance

The final unit looked at how the plumbing system in a house works, including how waste products are managed. Students also learnt about servicing taps to stop leaks. In the workshop, students made a steel bottle opener as their final project for the year.

Mark Arrantash

Physical Education

This term has been a busy one and has raced by! Basketball has been our focus sport, and most students have impressed with their rapid progress, especially during IBO. The Wildcats Carnival is one of our sporting highlights for the year. The chance to see and meet the Wildcats players encourages students to dream big. Our first division teams’ performance was outstanding, and they were lucky enough to win the tournament for the second year running. Special mention goes to our second division team, who also won all their games and played like stars! We have also had lots of skills testing for our end of year reports.

Ali Saad and Patrick with Wildcats trophy

The year 10’s Recreational Pursuits program has continued, and after developing their fishing skills at school, students went on excursions to Kent Street weir. Though many said it was impossible, Hamilton, Jack and Nicholas proved everyone wrong by catching their first Black Bream on the final day of fishing. Lastly, I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all staff and students for their heroic efforts throughout the year!

Workplace Learning

So close to the end of the year!  How fast do the years go by?

Recently, I was doing some travel training for a senior student so he could travel to work independently when he left school. I had been travel training for some time without a lot of progress and had begun to have doubts that the student would be able to travel alone. On this day, something clicked, and the student could lead the way without any prompting.

On the way to meet the student, I was walking along the road and noticed a young lady getting ready to stop traffic to allow school students to cross the road safely.  As I got closer, I realised this student had attended Cannington Community Education Support Centre at least 10 years earlier!

On arrival at Workpower, where the student was travelling, I was greeted by an ex-student who is now the receptionist.

While waiting for support staff to arrive, another ex-student came into the reception area and offered the office staff hot chocolate. She is now the company's barista and makes coffee for clients, staff, and visitors.

Another ex-student arrived. She was doing extra training as she had previously worked at the Belmont Workpower Site and was moving to the Bentley Site. She was excited to tell me all about the new training she would do for the day.

Once the travel training student started his work with the support staff, I went to the Barista to get a coffee. She directed me to the line where I had to order the coffee first. While I was standing in line, another ex-student came over to greet me and had a quick chat before getting on with his work.

I ordered the coffee and stood in the canteen waiting for it to be made.  Yet another ex-student came to greet me and have a chat.

When I left Workpower, I was elated and reassured that the work we are so passionate about really changes lives. All the ex-students were so excited to let me know what they had been doing since they left school, and they all had such amazing pride in the work they were engaged in. I feel so privileged to say that our Workplace Learning Program plays a part in making changes in the future lives of our students.

Sarah, Mrs Pears, Taylor, Rebecca and Shania

Congratulations to the Year 10 students who have worked hard and attended various workplaces during their Industry Tasters.  They have a little experience in the workforce and now have an idea of the type of work they would like to try.  We look forward to welcoming these students to the Senior Campus next year.

Micro Enterprise Stall

On Friday, seven lucky students from our school were asked to set up and staff a market stall at Central Park in the city. Our stall comprised plants from the school garden, wooden products from the school’s workshop and a range of items made by students in their classrooms. Our students used their customer service and math skills to sell their products to the passing lunchtime crowd. Some of our products ended up as Secret Santa gifts as staff Christmas parties are well underway in the city. We worked on honing sales techniques with students by getting them to wait and let the customers have a look at our products, then pick the right moment to offer assistance and close the deal! All the students who attended said they enjoyed meeting people and taking a break from the classroom.

Middle School Camp

The Swan Valley Adventure Centre middle school camp was a fantastic experience for all involved. Students had so much fun participating in the activities at the beautiful campsite, aiming for the target in archery, racing over the obstacles on the commando course, braving the heights of the flying fox, cooling off in the swimming pool, challenging others in a water pipe competition, and zooming down the hill on the slips and slides.

We all enjoyed the movie Moana 2 and popcorn at Midland Gate Cinema. Some people even snoozed in the reclining chairs!

The Hawaiian disco was just so colourful as everyone had made a great effort to dress up. There was dancing, singing and doing the limbo. They had so much fun.

Finally, the food was outstanding. I have never seen the students eat so much. Seconds, thirds and even fourths!!! They loved it.
