First day of term 1 for students

From the Principal's Desk

Kaya, we have truly entered the Noongar Season' Kambarang', represented by the colour yellow, symbolising the return of hot weather. Besides seeing an abundance of colours and flowers explode around us, we will also see more snakes and reptiles as they start to awaken from hibernation and families of birds singing. Koolbardioes (magpies) will be out protecting their nests and their babies! This is my favourite time of the year.

We have started the term off strong and determined. Staff have been extremely busy organising transition for our year 10 students, who will be moving up to our senior campus next year, and our new year 7 students, who will have their first transition day next Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, 6 November, we will hold our first CCESC Presentation Ceremony for our year 12 students at the City of Canning Town Hall. We are incredibly excited to celebrate the final chapter of school with their parents, carers and school community members. I would like to acknowledge Dwayne Griffin, Rhoda Whelan, Cindi Griffin, and Justin Van Der Westhuizen, who are working behind the scenes to make the event memorable.

The staff are excited about the upcoming middle school camp at Swan Valley Adventure Centre – we appreciate the efforts and camp preparations by Annie Foyster and the team of people it takes to coordinate such an event. Thank you.

Everyone will be receiving reports before the term breaks. As per Department of Education guidelines, this semester we will be reporting on:

For years 7, 8 and 9

  • Comments and grades for General Capabilities of Literacy, Numeracy and Personal and Social Capabilities.
  • No requirement for other learning area comments.
  • An overall teacher comment.

Years 10, 11 and 12

  • Grades and Attitude, Behaviour Effort marks for all courses and programs.
  • No requirement for comments on courses and programs.
  • Short comments and progress codes on Individual Transition Plans.

Thank you

Angela Whittington

Class Updates

7AF

The students have made huge progress this year, particularly with their confidence and teamwork skills. This was demonstrated beautifully at the ESSN Athletics Carnival last week, where they tried their hardest and gave everything a go. Seeing all the students smiling, having fun, and enjoying the day with students from other schools was lovely.

7AF continued cooking during the Friday maths sessions and made some delicious items. The class favourite was the homemade pizzas, where the students measured the ingredients and made their dough from scratch.

Only a few of our science experiment - 'hairy caterpillars', managed to survive the hot weekend, but we have been persevering in trying to keep the grass alive by watering them daily and keeping them indoors in the sun rather than in the direct sun.

Finally, we have been preparing for the upcoming camp, which will take place in December. We have been learning about the Swan Valley Adventure Centre, planning what we need to pack in a day bag, and selecting a movie and disco theme for the evenings at the camp. Our class movie choice is Ratatouille, and our disco theme is black and white. We are hoping that all the other classes agree with our choices!

7SS

We had a fantastic start to term 4 in 7SS, with full attendance on day one. It was good to see the students get back to school relaxed and ready to learn. This year has gone so quickly, and it is hard to believe that the students have nearly completed their first year of high school at CCESC.

The last two weeks of term 3 were very busy. As part of Mental Health Week, many activities were organised by the Student Services team during the last week of term 3. Face painting, a giant water dunk and slide and a farmyard animal visit were some of the activities that our class participated in and thoroughly enjoyed.

Enjoying the animals

All the students enjoyed the Middle School Athletics Carnival and are to be commended for having tried their best and participating in their chosen events to the best of their ability.

Having fun at the Carnival

Sam's Spares, a Not-for-Profit Organisation, has been kind enough to donate laptops and tablets to our school. Congratulations, Montana and Heath, our class's two lucky winners. They were thrilled when their names were drawn during the last term assembly.

The lucky winners – Montana and Heath

Last term, in our art lessons, we started our poppy flower project, aiming to complete it for Remembrance Day on 11 November. The project has been completed, and our clay poppy flowers look beautiful. Students will continue to learn about poppies and why they are used as a symbol for Remembrance Day.

Students enjoyed a basketball clinic session on Monday, 21st October. They had fun learning to pass, dribble and shoot the ball. The ESSN Athletics Carnival was held at Byford Secondary College on Friday 25th October. Students participated in the event alongside students from other Education Support schools in the South Network.

At the Carnival

This term will keep us busy with lots of fun activities ahead. The most exciting event is the camp. Students have been researching and completing several pre-camp activities in class and are all looking forward to the Swan Adventure Camp.

The students have made impressive gains this year, especially in increased confidence and participation. Seeing all class members "having a go" on the basketball court during our most recent basketball clinic was encouraging—a big high 5 to Ralph, who came along to show us his skills.

I'd also like to give a big shout-out to Louise, who received a medal for her enthusiastic participation in all events at the ESSN Athletics Carnival at Byford Secondary College. Congratulations Louise!

Most of all, classroom staff have been blown away by the effort our students put into their persuasive argument presentations this year. Each student selected a topic that matched their opinions and wrote scripts for presenting their arguments to the class. We were impressed by the maturity shown by all students speaking in front of their peers and when it was their turn to listen as audience participants—well done, everyone!

Finally, we ended our unit on Pop Art, finishing our Andy Warhol-inspired prints. They turned out even better than I expected, and Mr Wilson was quite chuffed by our homage to him! Look out for his portrait, coming to the Admin Office soon.

8MS

There is a lot of chatter around the school and in class about our upcoming camp. Students are excited to be full campers and day campers. Ms Spadanuda is working on some exciting activities with the students regarding camp, but more on that later.

We have finally finished a couple of our art projects. We made dragons from our handprints and added a head and a tail. They look very effective and look great displayed in our room. It is one of the first things you notice when you enter. They are so colourful and fiery! We are also displaying our animal silhouettes. They look impressive as well. We are currently creating 'Pop Art Landscapes' based on a guided drawing lesson.

Students prepare for the week nine camp (full or day) by creating social stories matching their circumstances. These stories can provide a good foundation for relieving the anxiety that can happen with changes to the usual daily routines. Most students are excited about all the camp activities and choices made available to them. Students will have many more class-based opportunities to review the itineraries, food options and dorm arrangements before departure. We thank Mrs Foyster, our camp coordinator, for her tireless efforts so far.

In small group literacy sessions, students are working on individual goals and mini-projects. Jet is learning to use SWAY and creating a World War I electronic project. It's looking fabulous. Chevelle is writing a social story about herself to help her prepare for some huge changes, including moving to a new house. Tavis is applying voice-to-text technology to his written work and understanding how clearer verbal communication makes things easier. Also, Diesel is learning about keywords and how to improve Google searches to find what he is looking for.

Fridays in 8MS continue to include our containers for change enterprise/volunteering activity. It's great to see the students working in small groups to benefit the school. We often have little competitions to see who can collect the most in our session, motivating the students. Our running totals are on our Connect class for parents/carers to view.

Thanks to Mr H for organising the Basketball Clinic in week 4. Denzel shared some of his Wildcat moves with our students.

It's great to see everyone back and enjoying the sunshine.

Here are a few highlights from this term:

In art, students used coloured pencils, crayons, and watercolours to design a sunset.

Creating our sunsets

During literacy, students identified different work industries by looking at images of familiar shops and companies. They also researched a famous person, vehicle and animal and listed some facts about them.

Researching jobs

In numeracy, the class walked around the school and calculated the total number of bins and tables around the campus. They listed the different types of payment methods and their advantages and disadvantages.

Researching payment methods

Students participated in some basketball clinics with coach Denzel from the Perth Basketball Association. They learnt basic defensive stances and worked on some passing drills.

Learning new skills

During cooking, students made puff pastries, Spaghetti Bolognese and apple crumble.

Honing our cooking talents

In science, students ordered the different stages of the plant cycle by using images.

Learning about the plant cycle

During HASS, students listed some facts about the European continent.

It is unbelievable that we are into the last term of the year.

This term, we have been creating and conducting surveys to collect data about favourite animals, colours, food, pets and cars.

Working on our surveys

Students participated in two basketball clinics in the last few weeks. The clinics were very engaging and fun.

This semester, we have been learning about germs in science, and the students are investigating germs growing on bread.

10VL

The beginning of term 4 for 10VL has been exceptionally busy!!

During week 3, we went to Point Walter, did a bushwalk, rode bikes and scooters, and paddled kayaks on the river. We ate lunch on the grass under the shade of the tree. Seeing everyone participating, talking to each other, and showing kindness was fantastic.

Masouma on a bike

Lola on a kayak

Also, in week 3, year 10 students had their rescheduled Duke of Edinburgh camp at school. They set their tents up in groups, showered at school, ate nachos for dinner and then went to Carousel to watch The Wild Robot at Hoyts. The behaviour of the students at the cinema was fantastic!! I am so proud of all of them! After returning to school, they went to bed and cooked themselves breakfast upon waking up in the morning. They did a great job working together as a team and proving themselves as young adults.

During week 4, some students went to TAFE and had a 'taster' of horticulture. They sharpened secateurs, wore the correct PPE, and planted an African Violet plant in a pot to take home.

Some students from 10VL and 10WP at TAFE

Lochlan and Abu also got to go to the Wildcats Basketball Carnival. Lochlan was in the Division One team. He was pretty stoked that they won their division's Carnival and brought the trophy home!

It has been a fantastic start to the term, and we look forward to the last adventures in year 10 in middle school!

10WP

Hello parents and carers. Term 4 has started with 10WP being very busy. We continue to complete our workplace learning commitments, with students working exceptionally well at the task assigned each week. We also undertake transition activities on Mondays, where students can complete activities with the current year 11 classes. The focus is for students to get to know the senior students so they can see a familiar face next year and hopefully generate new friendships.

As part of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, some students completed the adventurous journey component by undertaking an overnight camp at school. This required them to set up their tents and sleeping bags. We also ventured to Carousel and watched a movie. The next morning, students were able to cook their breakfast. By all accounts, the students had a great time.

As part of transition activities, students also went to Point Walter, where they rode bicycles and used kayaks. They also had the opportunity to interact with the current senior students. There will be another excursion to Point Walter during week 6.

Transition activities will be very busy over the next few weeks. Don't forget, if you want to know more about the transition to the senior campus, there is a parent afternoon tea called on 13th November at the business centre, Sevenoaks Senior College, commencing at 3:15 pm. If you wish to attend, please RSVP to Lisa Benstead, telephone 6235 7296.

2024 has flown by, and we can't believe we are so close to the end of year 11. Throughout this year, the students have worked exceptionally hard in their literacy, numeracy, ASDAN, DFES, Keys 4 Life, independent living, workplace learning, and senior school elective classes.

We have also watched and heard the development of the elevated rail along Sevenoaks Street. We look forward to the project's completion so the students can travel by train again soon.

We are very proud of the young men and women in the class who continually learn new skills and maintain a positive attitude toward their learning.

In the students' own words, these are the highlights of term 4:

Oliver

I enjoyed participating in the activities at Point Walter and chilling out with my friend on the excursion.

Robbie

I really enjoy cooking, attending Trade Start classes and the ESSN Athletics Carnival in Byford.

Hannah

I like going to Coker Park and cooking focaccia and biscuits on Fridays. Participating in kayaking and the walk along the river at Point Walter was also fun.

Jayden

I liked kayaking at Point Walter and seeing the swans with their cygnets (baby swans) on the Swan River. I am glad that I passed my Keys 4 Life test and will be able to get my Learner's Permit soon.

Summer

The best parts of this term have been doing WLP at a childcare centre, Keys for Life, kayaking at Point Walter, the ESSN Athletics Carnival in Byford and having an ice cream at the Middle School.

Jim

I liked bike riding along the path at Point Walter and I enjoy cooking and spinning the wheel to pick the music each Friday.

Devyn

I really like helping out at assembly and at other times assisting with the laptop and PC. I also like reward time and gaining my Keys 4 Life Certificate.

Design and Technology

Year 7 Woodwork: Students have completed a balancing game that tests hand-eye coordination! Students have now started a naughts and crosses game made from wood. The naughts and crosses will be put onto wooden blocks using a very hot branding iron. Students enjoy watching the branding process as there is lots of smoke and sometimes flame!

Year 8 Woodwork: Students have been testing their templating skills to make a model Spitfire aircraft. They traced around the provided templates, cut out the shapes, and assembled the resulting kit. Once the planes were constructed, a camouflage paint job was added.

Year 9 Woodwork: Students have completed their money box trucks. This model introduces students to using working drawings. It requires many components made from a range of materials.

Year 9 with their money boxes

Duke of Edinburgh Award, Overnight camp at school: Year 10 students have spent a lot of time honing their skills for their overnight camp at school. It was good to see students setting up camp and getting used to being at school after hours. We had a very busy afternoon setting up, having showers and tea and then jumping on the school bus to make it to Hoyts for a movie starting at 6:15 pm! Students then used their cooking skills to cook breakfast in the school garden.

I would like to thank the year 10 team for all their work day and night to make this event a great success for students.

Senior DFES camp at the Perth Hills Activity Centre: Year 12 DFES Cadets completed their overnight tent camp at the Perth Hills Activity Centre near Mundaring on the last few days of term 3. Once again, students challenged themselves by being in the bush environment during the day and for some night activities. They enjoyed the blind trail and the opportunity to light and tend to their campfires.

Once again, we had a great team of staff who worked hard to make this camp an enjoyable experience for our students.

Physical Education

Term 4 has seen a lot happening in physical education, with the whole school attending the ESSN Interschool Athletics Carnival on Friday, 25 October. Not only did the students behave well and have a great time, they also made lots of new friends!

Our focus this term is basketball, with students working on their skills and attending in-school basketball clinics. We participated in the  Wildcats Interschool Basketball Carnival, held on 30 October.

All classes have been participating in lots of physical education and health testing for their reports. The students have been very patient and well-behaved. A big thank you from Mr P!

The year 10 students have begun their transition to senior school, enjoying a day out at Point Walter (in week 2), where they socialised with friends from year 11 and enjoyed fun activities like bushwalks, riding bikes and kayaking. All had a great day! They've also continued to apply themselves during recreational pursuits. This term, we are developing our fishing skills, learning about the gear used, how to fish safely, and how to cast the line with our fishing rods. In the coming weeks, we will head down to the Canning River to try and catch something.

Student Services Update

Warm spring weather

We have started to experience some warmer spring days, and it is important that during the warmer weather, you take care of your health and remember some simple steps to reduce your risk of heat-related illnesses such as headaches, dehydration, and heat stress.

Some simple steps to remember for school:

  • Keep HYDRATED by drinking plenty of fluids, preferably water, bring a drink bottle to school or visit the water fountain for frequent sips.
  • Limit caffeinated drinks (including tea, coffee, and energy drinks) as these can increase dehydration.
  • Rest in cool, shaded areas during recess and lunch breaks, and avoid running around and playing out in the direct sun.
  • If you are working or playing in the sun, remember to be sun smart by protecting yourself in 5 ways – SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK, SLIDE.
