From the Principal's Desk
Kaya and Wandjoo, to the season of Djilba, represented by the colour pink as it symbolises the growth of wildflowers and plants. It is also the time when the woodland birds are still nest-bound, hence the swooping protective behaviour of the koolbardi (magpie), djidi djidi (willy wagtails) and chuck-a-luck (wattle birds). The weather has been glorious, just in time for camps, carnivals and health promotion events. Thanks to all the staff who have coordinated these events and put in the extra hours. A few staff got dunked in the water during mental health week, and the DFES team are excited about the upcoming camp in Mundaring.
Another cohort of year 12 students will leave us early next term, and those doing traineeships will return next year. They have been a wonderful group of students, with many doing all their secondary schooling with us at Cannington Community ESC. I am sure they all have fantastic memories of their time with us and are excited about the end-of-year events and their futures as young adults in the community. We look forward to hearing from you in the future.
I want to acknowledge Mrs Whittington's work in liaising with Sam’s Spares and getting delivery of some laptops and tablets. The tablets were handed out at assembly on Monday, and there were a lot of very happy faces. We wish Sam’s Spares all the best in the Westfield competition. We are proud of our partnerships with community groups.
The Department has provided clarification of the requirements for end-of-semester reports. In light of this information, we are considering a review of our school’s assessment and reporting plan. The Department has worked with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority to clarify the following:
- There is a requirement to provide an overall teacher comment, the content of which is determined by the school.
- There is no requirement to provide comments on learning areas.
- There is no requirement to provide grades at the strand or sub-strand level.
- Students with special educational needs are not required to provide a learning area comment or attachments, such as photos. Reporting for these students aligns with the individual education plan that was developed with parents.
I would like to wish all our community members a fabulous school holiday period, whether you check out the Royal Show, look around our beautiful countryside, or attend respite activities. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable time together. To our dedicated staff, we thank you for all the roles you carry out. It is great to be part of a team where everybody has each other's back and puts students at the front of everything we do. Enjoy your well-deserved break.

Class Updates
7AF
7AF has enjoyed a wonderful third term full of exciting learning activities. All students have been working hard and trying their best while having fun.
They have specifically enjoyed preparing for the upcoming sports carnival and working as a team. They also particularly loved making ‘hairy caterpillars’ as part of the ‘Living and non-living’ science programme.

Hairy caterpillars
The students enjoyed participating in the Wednesday IBO sessions with students from the other year 7 class and students from years 8, 9, and 10. Pavani, Jacob, Isaiah, and Zahlia really enjoyed the karaoke sessions.
We have also been learning about safe behaviours and life skills. We learned how to answer the phone and take a message politely, how to fold our clothes using a folding board, and who to call in an emergency.
Finally, we have been learning measuring and cooking skills in our maths lessons.

Measuring and cooking
Special thanks to the amazing class staff who have supported the students this term, and well done to all 7AF students. You are brilliant.
Annie Foyster and 7AF
7SS
As we approach the end of term 3, each student in 7SS is to be commended for their hard work and effort this term. The term commenced with IEP meetings and goal setting, and students have been working hard in the classroom to achieve their goals in all areas of learning.
On Thursdays, for numeracy, we work as two groups. One group works in the classroom, completing simple measuring activities and games. The other group works with Mr Arrantash and are learning to calculate areas and perimeters. We have learned a simple song that helps us differentiate perimeter from area. Currently, we are linking our lesson to our everyday lives by measuring the size of the room, calculating the floor area, and then learning to organise the right furniture and appliances in the space available.

In Art, we are working on our new project of making a Poppy flower with clay. The first thing we did was soften the clay and roll it into a ball. Then, we flattened it using a rolling pin. The next step was to cut out a round piece using a cutter. Then, we pressed the edges with our fingers to flatten it and make it look like a petal. After that, we made the poppy stem with another piece of clay and attached it to the bottom of the flower. It was then placed into a container and left to dry for a week. After it dried, we painted it red. The last step is firing this in a kiln. Thanks to Mrs Sheldon for taking them to her dad’s kiln and completing the final process.

Austin working on his art project
In Science with Ms Janes, we learned about objects that float and sink in water. We practically assessed different objects in the classroom to understand why particular objects float while others sink. We also learned to make aeroplanes and helicopters with paper. After making the planes, we tested how far it could fly. We thoroughly enjoyed this activity.

Aiden testing his helicopter
P & C organised a wonderful Father’s Day stall. We all visited the stall and independently chose a gift to present to our dad on Father’s Day. We also observed Cancer Council Daffodil Day on 23rd August. We made daffodils with paper, came dressed in yellow, and donated a gold coin to support the great cause.

It is getting busier as we near the end of term. We have the athletics carnival on Thursday, September 12th, at the Ern Clarke Athletics Centre. We have been practising with Mrs Smith during our Physical Education lessons. The end-of-term Assembly hosted by the Year 9s will be held on September 16th at the Sevenoaks Gym.

We’ve continued making toys to donate to RSPCWA. Our donation box is full of pet toys, accessories, and food, ready to be taken to RSPCA WA. Thank you to our cleaners and other members of the CCESC community for their kind donations.
ART
Our class is currently learning about and creating Pop Art designs. The students have done a brilliant job on their 1960’s Batman Onomatopoeia designs. The next project will be Andy Warhol-inspired, repeat print self-portraits.

SCIENCE
Students have been engaged and excited to learn about our Solar System. We have a new interactive app on our iPads – Solar System Scope, which had everyone transfixed upon trialling it for the first time. It’s always such a thrill to see students having fun while they learn.

We want to welcome Diesel back to our class after an extended stay in Queensland. It is lovely to have you back, Diesel.
Now, let us throw over our newsletter contribution to the students. Ms Spadanuda has been working with the students during literacy sessions to write recounts using AI to assist them in developing their thoughts. Here is what has been happening and what they have to say about it.
Jet says:
Firstly, in Term 3, we had a Rugby Clinic where we learned how to play rugby with HD from Rugby WA. During the clinic, HD tackled me, and I discovered that I liked rugby more than AFL.
Secondly, we also had an AFL Clinic where we focused on learning ball skills and kicking the ball. Despite this, I still preferred rugby over AFL.
Thirdly, Diesel came back from Queensland, and I felt really happy about it.
Finally, we have been hanging out together during recess, which has been a lot of fun.
Tavis says:
I used a template and AI to help me with my recount.
Firstly, this term at school was really interesting and busy. I played rugby, and we had two clinics that helped us improve our techniques and teamwork on the field.
Secondly, in woodwork class, I worked on a project where I made models of World War II aircraft, which was both challenging and rewarding.
Thirdly, I had the opportunity to cook pancakes in cooking class, which was a fun and delicious experience.
Finally, I enjoyed reflecting on everything we accomplished and felt proud of the new skills I developed over the term.
Diesel says:
Firstly, after returning from Queensland, I was thrilled to come back to my old school, CCESC.
Secondly, I spent a lot of time catching up with my school friends, which made me really happy.
Thirdly, I enjoyed working on my woodwork projects and participating in the IBO activities the most. I am also helping out with our Cash for Containers initiative.

Hello everyone from 10VL!
Term Three has been a hectic term for all of us. Students have been preparing extensively during Term 3 for the Year 10 Duke of Ed camp. They have been practicing pitching tents, rolling out and rolling up sleeping bags, inflating camp beds, and cooking various camp foods on a gas burner camp stove. They have tried their hardest and participated fully in all these lessons. They have loved all the food they’ve gotten to try! Thanks, Mr Arrantash!

10WP
Hello, parents and carers.
As we near the end of Term 3, 10WP has been very busy. The class has begun Workplace Learning on Fridays, which has seen them allocated to various industries to get a taste of what potential employment in this industry entails. Each allocation lasts two weeks, and students spend two hours at each workplace. Every two weeks, they are rotated through a different industry to gain insight into that industry.

Week eight was Teacher’s Aide Appreciation Week. To celebrate all the hard work that our Education Assistants (EAs) do, I purchased a cake on behalf of 10WP to thank our EAs for their dedication to making a difference in the student's lives, not just academically but also in their health and well-being. The EAs are integral to the classroom; teaching would be much harder without them. So, to all our EAs, a big thank you from the students and me for all the effort you have put in this year.

Thank you!
Students will begin spending more time next term at the Sevenoaks campus to familiarise themselves with where services are, like the Admin for Education Support, the canteen, and other areas. The purpose is to reduce as much anxiety and stress as possible, as this is a big move to the senior campus next year. Students will be placed in groups with the Year 11 students, who will show them the ropes and hopefully create new friendships. Next term will be hectic, as always, but it will also be exciting.
As the holidays are fast approaching, we hope you enjoy them and stay safe.
See you next term.

This term has been a whirlwind of wrapping up academic work, including finalising ASDAN PSHE portfolios and ITPs. Our students have been eagerly counting down the weeks to the end of their schooling, participating in various end-of-year activities. These have included an excursion to Canning Town Hall for a rehearsal for their Presentation Ceremony.
They are looking forward to the Senior DFES Camp at the end of this term. In preparation for this, they’ve been practicing setting up tents and researching recipes for cooking on a camp stove. Workplace learning has also been exciting, with Greyhounds as Pets being a favourite placement for some of our students.
The Literacy and Numeracy P-Units are nearly complete and will be finalised before the end of the term. As many of our students will leave at the end of Week 1 next term, our class will look very different for the remainder of the year.
Lynna and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each parent and caregiver for their support this year. The year has flown by, with much achieved and celebrated. We wish all our students the very best for 2025 and beyond.

Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Award Adventurous Journey - Camping skills
Year 10 students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards have spent more time practicing their camping skills as their overnight camp at school had to be delayed due to the weather. This has meant more time practicing camp cooking and participating in team building skills. Students have been learning to tie knots and used them to make an emergency stretcher. Students have also tasted dehydrated camping meals that NASA developed initially for astronauts living in space.

Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Award – Service
Year 10s have been working hard maintaining some of the school's garden areas. Students have been learning about maintaining and safely using mechanical gardening equipment as a form of service that will contribute towards the bronze level Duke of Edinburgh Award. They have also been learning about preparing for the arrival of summer and the requirement to be fire and snake ready by removing long grass around the school.

Tradestart
Once again, Tradestart students have been busy. This year’s group worked too fast, so we had to introduce some extra models. Students have made a wastepaper bin out of sheet metal. The fabrication process required the students to use a sheet metal roller to form the shape. This year's group had a go at operating a metal lathe that involved centre drilling and parallel turning. Students have also participated in a cardboard box challenge. They had to use supplied cardboard to make an armchair that would support Mr A. Students explored the material properties of the cardboard and employed some engineering principles to create strength. Two armchairs were constructed and scored in 7 categories, from aesthetics to design and durability. One armchair passed user trials, and one didn’t!

Senior DFES Cadet camp at Mundaring.
Year 12 DFES cadets have met to discuss plans for their upcoming overnight camp at the Perth Hills Activity Centre near Mundaring. Over two days, students participating in this event will be invited to challenge themselves in many ways. They will be camping in tents, cooking many of their meals, and getting used to being out in the bush at night. I want to thank the staff at the campsite for being very supportive and accommodating and making our stay memorable.

Workplace Learning
Once again, this term seems to have flown by but that is probably because our students have been keeping us so busy in Workplace Learning!
We have 8 Year 12 & 13 students doing School Based Traineeships this year. These students all attend their workplace independently – that means they manage their own travel arrangements to & from work & also work 1 or 2 days per week without a support person accompanying them. To complete the requirements of the Traineeship, they also work on theory modules while at school. We have had fantastic employer feedback - these students should all be congratulated on their maturity & reliability in attending work. Congratulations Ava Moore, Dylan Ryan, Germano Masino, Hudson Hough, Jessica Dunn, Oliver Thomas, Reece Hogarth & Xavier Sorenson!
We had 2 students graduate from Project Employment this term! Project Employment is a 7-week program run by Edge Employment Solutions designed to make the transition from school to work as easy as possible. We received lovely feedback about how both students were engaged and enthusiastic in the classroom. Well done, Jaimie Hayes and KoopA McFarlane!

Jaimie and KoopA receiving achievement awards
We also have 14 Year 10, 11, and 12 students attending TAFE courses in animal care, automotive, community services, painting and decorating, rural operations, and supply chain operations. We must acknowledge the support of parents in getting the students to campuses as far away as Rockingham so they can complete the courses. We congratulate all the students for their regular attendance and commitment to learning in an adult learning environment. Well done, everyone!
Our Year 10 students have begun their ASDAN Work-Right learning. This program has our students attending a workplace for 2 hours on two occasions before they move on to the next workplace/industry - we are already onto the second round of placements! There is a lot of change involved in the program – different types of workplaces, different travel arrangements, and different uniform requirements, but our Year 10s have taken all this in their stride! The feedback from both the employers & the support staff is that the students have shone in the workplace! We couldn’t be prouder & we know this will give students a headstart when they begin their Workplace Learning program next year.
We had 4 students doing their Travel Training this term. Oliver Gallen & Khalid Hussein have been signed off as independent travellers! Wah Sa Lay Paw is now qualified to travel to school via Transperth public transport - we will begin training her on the reverse journey from school to home shortly & look forward to signing her off as an independent traveller! We have also just started Travel Training with Ryan Wallace from home to his workplace, where he is being assessed for a position after he finishes school. Well done to you all!
This is a bittersweet time of the year for us as we prepare for our Year 12s and 13s to make their final farewell to school and begin their life journey into the wider community. One day, you will look back and think, “Those were the best days of my life.” May all your hopes and dreams come true. We look forward to hearing about your achievements in the future.

Physical Education
The 2024 Kalability All Stars Kickability Carnival is an integrated sporting event for Year 7-13 students with a disability from Education Support Schools across the Perth Metropolitan area. The 2024 carnival was held on 21 August at Kostera Oval in Kalamunda. The carnival is a great way to introduce students with disabilities to AFL and may also encourage them to sign up at local junior clubs in the future. All games played at the carnival are a modified version of AFL, allowing students of all abilities to participate and enjoy themselves in an inclusive environment.
The Division 1 team consisted of our midfielders Lochlan, Ali-Saad, and Patrick, who did a great job in the middle, played hard, and got their hands on lots of the football. Although the forwards Reon, Ryan, Charli and Abu took lots of marks, we didn’t kick straight and couldn’t finish our hard work. The defenders Lars, Paige, Ken and KoopA were resolute in defence and repelled many entries, however we ended up just missing out on the silverware. The game was played in the correct spirit, and hopefully, we will have some students who enjoy playing AFL, and it will encourage them to sign up for a local All-Abilities AFL team.
The Division 2 team consisted of Chevelle, Elina, Montasir, Basma, Oviya, Akbar, Emily, Mitchell, Masouma, Tanmay, Jack, Wah Sa Lay Paw and Hugh. It was a pleasure coaching the Division 2 team. Although we didn’t taste victory, the games were tight, and our students never stopped believing.
Kalability Kickability Carnival fun!

Student Services Update
The end of term 3 was jam-packed with the AFL carnival, R U OK Day, Cannington’s Athletics Carnival, Mental Health Week, and DFES camp. It was great to see our students getting involved, learning new things, getting out of their comfort zones, and improving their mental health.
The school celebrated R U OK Day on Friday, September 13, due to the athletics carnival on the Cannington site and on Thursday, September 12, at the Sevenoaks site. Students got involved in a number of activities, including free pancakes, colouring in, guessing the lolly jar, decorating their own muffins, a photo booth, and a kindness wall. We encourage you to Ask R U OK? Any Day of the year because a conversation could change a life.
Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day.
A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day.
By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.
