Kaya

We have had a wonderful end to term 2 with assemblies, Market Day, the Public School review validation visit, and Music Rocks the Rosemount. Staff have worked extremely hard to get reports out and finish all their end-of-term tasks. The students have worked hard to achieve their goals and can be well pleased with their efforts.

It was lovely to see so many ex-students returning for Market Day. It was great to catch up and hear about their life stories after school. Many remain friends and have fond memories of their time with us. Seeing so many of our parents/caregivers attend was also great. I loved watching some of the students selling their wares, and their sales pitches were very persuasive. I never realised I needed a shower disc to make everything smell fresh and clean—clearly, I have been missing out. All classes reported strong sales, and most importantly, the students learned new skills and displayed them in real-life situations. Well done to the year 10 team for organising the event.

I posted an update on our Connect page for parents about free home internet for unconnected families with school-aged students. The Australian Government School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) offers free home internet for eligible families with school-aged students until 31 December 2025. To be eligible, families must:

  • have no active broadband service.
  • have a device capable of accessing the internet.
  • live in premises where they can access a standard NBN service.
  • have a child living at home who is enrolled in an Australian school.

Free broadband starts when the service is activated with a participating internet provider. The internet provider will not place families on a paid service at the end of the free service without consent. For more information and a list of participating internet providers, visit NBN Co School Student Broadband Initiative or call 1800 626 269.

If you think you are eligible and want to self-nominate for the free broadband offer:

  • call the National Referral Centre on 1800 954 610 (Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm Australian Eastern Daylight-saving time)
  • visit the School Student Broadband Initiative website.

For technical support in more than 100 regional and remote communities throughout Western Australia, contact your local Community Resource Centre.

I would also like to remind parents/caregivers that the state government WA Student Assistance Payment closes on 28th June 2024. WA Student Assistance Payment (education.wa.edu.au)

A reminder about our Post School Options Expo at the City of Canning Town Hall on 7th August: our WPL team has been working hard to get NDIS providers to attend and have stalls so our families can look at what is on offer. Save the date, and further information will be made available closer to the date.

Online Third-Party Services

Online services are essential for teaching, learning, and school administration. These include websites and web and mobile applications delivered over the Internet. Providers of Online Third Party Services are external to the school and sometimes hosted outside of Australia. They may need parental consent before we disclose student information to the service.

We will send out the 2024 Third Party Online Policies and Permissions on Connect early in term 3. When you receive it, please read the information and then give your consent for your child to use the Online Third-Party Services. Thank you.

Class Updates

7AF

I cannot believe we are nearly at the end of term 2, which means we are halfway through the first year of high school. 7AF has focussed on developing our literacy and numeracy skills, increasing our resilience, improving our mindfulness, and enjoying learning social skills. For the past five Friday afternoons, two students from 8CL have taught us how to play ‘Taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza”. It is a high-energy, fun, and fast-paced game that many have enjoyed learning.

In addition, we have participated in electives on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

We finished making our model cars from term 1 in woodwork, then made a robot and a truck. We have just started making an aeroplane.”

In physical education, we have been playing soccer and cricket and learning how to work in a team.

In cooking, we have enjoyed looking at recipes, measuring the ingredients and preparing delicious, simple meals.

Our class had a fantastic day at Scitech last Thursday. The students were awestruck by the planetarium show and fascinated by the mysteries of gravity and water during the science show. All the students were engaged and eagerly answered questions. It was lovely to see their expressions of joy and wonder as they walked into the planetarium. As they walked out, Isaiah, who had loved the whole show, exclaimed, "Wow!"

We had the best day, and the students' behaviour and attitudes were amazing! I can't wait for our next excursion.

Having a fun time at Scitech

In week 7, we celebrated National Reconciliation Week. We participated in discussions through Class Connect and activities during recess and lunch. AJ and Isabella liked the face painting, and Zahlia enjoyed making a didgeridoo. We also got to taste kangaroo meat and delicious damper.

Market Day was held on Friday, 14 June. We enjoyed looking at all the items the other classes had made, buying gifts for different people, and buying the delicious food for sale. Zahlia created a song to entice people to buy cheese or cheese and ham toasties; Jayden liked going on the blender bike making a honey, banana, and oats smoothie; and Irfan, Zahlia, Dayon and Isabella demonstrated excellent customer service skills when serving customers at our gift stall—a big thank you to all the parents supported us on the day.

Finally, the year 7 students performed a song called “Wanjoo” at the end of term assembly. Dayon, Zahlia and AJ spoke at the assembly, and the year 8 students performed ‘I am Australian’. It was great to see so many parents attend.

We hope you all have a fantastic holiday and that the students get some rest and are ready for term 3

7SS

We are close to the end of term 2, and it is hard to believe that we are halfway through our first year of high school. We continue to focus on our learning goals across all subject areas. Each day, we gain confidence in completing tasks independently and being more responsible in the classroom.

Our option classes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We have enjoyed looking at recipes, following them and preparing simple meals this semester in cooking. We have completed our robot project in woodwork and are currently working on our cars. In physical education, we have been preparing for team sports and learning the importance of maintaining sportsmanship.

In week 7, we observed National Reconciliation Week. We participated in discussions through Class Connect and shared our knowledge of Reconciliation by participating in discussions and a quiz. Several hands-on activities were organised during recess and lunch, such as face painting and making didgeridoos. We also tasted kangaroo meat and delicious damper during National Reconciliation Week.

The most memorable day this term was our visit to the Perth Zoo on 13 June. We used the bus and the ferry service to get to the Zoo. Some of us were travelling on a ferry for the first time. The weather was perfect, and it was fun following the Zoo map and finding the animals that each one of us was interested to see. We had Zoo booklets that we marked off as we completed each activity. Though we were exhausted by the end of the day, it was a fantastic experience for all of us.

At the Perth Zoo

Our Market Day was a great success. We organised our stall in the morning, and our products were sold out just before the close time. We made a profit of over $100, which is great. Even though it was cold, our blender bike smoothies were still in demand. We had lots of people lining up for it. Congratulations to Jenson for being the lucky winner of the raffle  – a beautiful art piece. A big thank you to all the parents who, despite their busy schedules, made time to come, buy our products and support us.

We hope you enjoyed the end of term assembly hosted by the years 7 and 8 students.

We wish all the students and their families a fantastic term break.

Market Day: Market Day was a blast with all 8CL students on rotation, helping to promote our business, serve customers and peruse the many wonderful products offered by other classes. Mohammed, Ron and Joesph also volunteered to help other groups run their stalls and activities. The students (and staff) worked like a well-oiled machine to assemble and package our Find-a-Moji board games ready for sale. The Deluxe Hot Chocolate Gift Packs were also a big hit.

Making our Deluxe Hot Chocolate Gift Packs

We look forward to brainstorming new creations for the next Market Day.

International Food Shopping: As part of our HASS and Home Economics curriculums, students have visited our CANDO Woolworths supermarket to research foods and other food products from overseas. The class has enjoyed this unit immensely, and they now match many dishes to their countries of origin.

RSPCA WA Donation Drive: Our class has been looking at ways to volunteer to support the RSPCA in caring for and protecting our animal friends from cruelty and neglect. We will set up a donation centre in our classroom for those who want to help. We will make animal toys and send donations of pet food, blankets and shredded paper. If you’d like to donate these items or any of the following, please drop them off at the school office during term 3:

There is a buzz in the room about the impending holidays. It’s very exciting. Some of us are going away, and others are staying at home but still doing fun things, “chillaxing”.

We are currently completing our write-ups for Ignite and ASDAN. Our physical activity reflections have been very interesting to read. This is what some of the students said:

Jet

I like going to the gym because it is fun and healthy. My favourite exercise is lifting dumbbells, and my least favourite is cleaning.

Samuel

Yes, it was fun to work out in the gym. I like to go on the treadmill the most.

Mark

I like going to the gym. I am really good at bike riding and walking fast on the treadmill.

Elena

I like the gym. I’m really good at walking.

Chevelle

I like going to the gym because it makes my body stronger, and the best part of the gym is the treadmill.

All the hard work in the gym is paying off. We can see marked improvements in our fitness, stamina and strength.

Cooking: This is always a favourite time of the week. We think it might be because the reward at the end is so yummy! Check out Ammar making pizzas in the classroom.

Tavis using his communication skills

One grass head shared a very strong resemblance to a male teacher on staff. See if you can guess who he is in the photo of Chevelle at Market Day.

As Mrs Martlew does not work on Fridays, she could not attend Market Day, but she has heard how good it was and that the students demonstrated very good customer service skills.

Literacy: During our small group literacy sessions, Ms Spadanuda has encouraged us to reflect on the school term. Here is what we had to say.

Jet

Firstly, I walked over to CANDO Woolworths to tally up international foods and saw my old friends. I like going to the senior campus.

Secondly, I tried Miso soup in HASS for international foods and didn't like it.

Thirdly, I learned about the Tour de France, which was interesting.

Finally, in IBO, I played Lego with Beau and Ethan. It was fun.

Thank you for reading my contribution to the newsletter.

Tavis

Firstly, while cooking, I made hamburgers, and I liked them a lot.  I know that hamburgers are named after the place Hamburg in Germany.

Secondly, for NRW, I tried kangaroo meat, and it was really good.

Thirdly, I went to the soccer carnival and we won.

Finally, during IBO, I played soccer at Coker Park with Patrick, Ken and Lars. We got five scores.

Thank you for reading my contribution to the newsletter.

Chevelle

Firstly, my therapist and I played Throw the Pig and Connect Four. I had fun.

Secondly, I enjoyed playing sport with my classmates. We played soccer and poison ball.

Thirdly, I have been working on my IEP goals for English. My teacher helps me. I am working on learning my new home address.

Thank you for reading and listening to my term 2 update.

9MH

The second half of term 2 has been fun due to excursion outings,  the soccer carnival, the Biggest Morning Tea and Market Day. It’s great to see the students smiling and participating in all the activities.

Our students visited Westfield Carousel to locate various bank branches. They identified the bank's name, asked the bank representatives questions, and learned how to use an ATM. They also walked around the centre and purchased lunch at the food hall.

We are near the end of our first semester of 2024. It has been a comparatively long term, but the students have shown great resilience and enthusiasm.

The last few weeks were busy with a few activities planned in our classroom and school.

Market Day is an amazing opportunity for all our students to get a real-life experience. 9SN jellies and handmade bracelets seemed very popular among the parents and students. Mitchell and Gianni showed great enthusiasm and stayed until the end to sell everything. Great work, boys!

10VL

Hello everyone!

10VL has had a very busy second half of the term.

Students have visited the RSL in Cannington twice, where they are working on painting an ANZAC mural for community service. They also volunteered at FoodBank and packed $4000 worth of food hampers! They worked so well as a team, and FoodBank was very impressed. Our class also worked with 10WP and hosted a Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser, raising $402 for the Cancer Council!

Working at Foodbank

Hamida preparing food for the Biggest Morning Tea

In numeracy, students have roleplayed paying for shopping, giving, and receiving the correct change. They have also learned about timetables, worked on them before and after, and built the school on Minecraft.

A snippet of the school building on Minecraft

In week 10, we also organised Market Day. Year 10 students were responsible for setting up the tables, decorations and marquees. The feedback was fantastic, and the students should be very proud of themselves for all they achieved this term!

10WP

Hello, parents and carers

It has been a busy and, at times, chaotic term with 10WP undertaking lots of community service activities. Traditionally, it is the responsibility of the year 10 cohort to organise ‘The Biggest Morning Tea’; this year was no exception. 10VL and 10WP combined to manage and run the event. It was a lot of hard work but a great success. Well done,  both classes. Another challenge was to organise ‘Market Day’, a very big event which required a lot of organisation on the part of both classes to make and sell products. The classes worked well together, and it was a great success.

Serving at the Biggest Morning Tea

Preparations for Market Day

We have enjoyed gaining some experience during our community service activities this term. The class visited Foodbank and learnt about how the organisation operates and what it does. The students were given tasks to complete, which they did very well. One group made bags of sweets, and the other made food packages. By the end of the day, 300 boxes of food worth $2500 were packed and ready to be delivered to those in need. All students showed a great community spirit.

Volunteering at Foodbank

We were also challenged to paint an ANZAC mural at the local RSL. This was an art competition, and the two winners’ murals will be painted on the outside wall. One of our students in 10WP was a winner and has had his artwork selected. Congratulations to Lawrence Roche on being one of the two winners.

Painting the ANZAC mural

Finally, as we prepare for workplace learning (WPL) next term, students will learn to create a resume. We have started by including our volunteering and will be able to add the experience gained from WPL. The students are conscious that this is an important document and will be frequently updated as they gain more experience in the workforce. Once the resumes are complete, the students will be able to look at different templates and use the information to create a resume that is more tailored to them.

11JL

We have fitted so much into our school program this term. The students have learned about National Reconciliation Week and viewed a video and some music clips to enhance their understanding of this significant week.

The students used their numeracy skills to measure ingredients for the class enterprise project “Recipes in a Jar”. On Market Day, the students used their communication and money skills when they encouraged customers to purchase their products and when they were customers at stalls hosted by other classes.

Preparing for Market Day

Working hard and enjoying Market Day

Each Monday, the students participate in HPE practical activities. During these sessions, they can play basketball, soccer, social games, swimming, and water sports. The HPE practical sessions are a very popular component of the year 11 timetable.

The highlights of the term, according to each student, are:

12CG

Another term has come and gone, and students in 12CG are looking towards the end of their formal schooling!

In English and ASDAN, students have revisited the topic of social media and learned how to combat online bullying, as well as tips on how to be resilient when on social media. They surveyed fellow students and made a graph on the typical use of social media amongst teenagers, with some interesting results. They have all been busy wrapping up their ADWPL placements in preparation for leaving school and obtaining paid work.

Isaac and Khalid at their work placements

Students participated in a very successful Market Day in week 9, where we sold out our enterprise products. Lachlan, Khalid, Ava and Monique did a fantastic job operating the stall, promoting our products and handling money. It is always a long day, but it is always so much fun!

Our Market Day stall

Some students in 12CG participated in The Friendship Project run by Developmental Disability WA for four weeks. It covered topics such as getting to know new people, making and maintaining friends, and learning what makes a good friend. They enjoyed the experience and definitely learned some new things.

There is much to look forward to next term—especially the Year 12 ball. Students who are attending have been busy looking at outfits, transport prices, and saving and paying for their tickets. It will be a fantastic night, and the staff look forward to seeing everyone in their finery.

Students will also attend the DFES overnight camp, where they will sleep in tents, cook camp food, and participate in many exciting activities—hopefully, the weather will be fine.

You have all worked extremely hard this term to finish everything on time, back to a regular 10-week term next term – the first one for the year. Staff in 12CG wish everyone a safe and restful holiday. You all deserve it.

Workplace Learning Adventures: Our students have been busy with their workplace learning placements this term, and it’s been a fantastic experience for everyone! Most of them are finishing their current placements and have learned many new skills.

Maths Focus: One big focus has been on money concepts, like figuring out how to give the correct change. It’s been great to see everyone getting the hang of it and practising for market day.

English Focus: In English, the students have been learning about resumes, job interviews, and creating great first impressions. They participated in a mock interview with Mrs Whelan and updated their resumes to reflect their current workplace learning placements. In the coming term, they will refresh their knowledge of staying safe when engaging in social media.

Jack Horner's Pies Enterprise Project: Jack Horner's Pies, our student-run business, has been chugging along nicely. Even though we didn’t have as many sales on the recent school Market Day, the students took it in stride. They used the feedback to think about what they could do differently next time, such as selling the pies hot and ready to eat. Learning from experience is a big part of what we’re about!

A big shoutout to Germano, who singlehandedly ran our stall on Market Day because other students were at TAFE or absent!

Germano

The pie sales to staff every Tuesday are still going strong. The students do a fantastic job taking orders, ensuring they’re filled, and delivering them before lunch. It’s been an excellent way for them to get hands-on experience running a business, including record keeping, chasing up outstanding payments, and working as a team.

What’s Next: As we wrap up this term, we’re super proud of all the hard work our students have put in. Their efforts in workplace learning and with Jack Horner's Pies have been impressive. We can’t wait to see how these experiences help them grow and succeed in the future.

As we move into the pointy end of year 12, our students will begin to finish their academic programs, including ASDAN modules, math, and English. The term will be filled with anticipation as they prepare for their presentation ceremony and graduation dinner.

Thanks for staying tuned and for all your support. We’ll have more updates and stories for you in the next newsletter. Have a great break!

Design and Technology

Year 7 woodwork students have completed the model called ‘Fred’s Wagon’. Students have worked with wood chisels to create a trench and used a wheel cutter mounted in a drill press to make the wheels. They have also decorated their models by painting them and customising them by adding a bonnet scoop and a blower! AJ, from year 7, felt the need to update Fred’s wagon when he saw the teacher sample.

Fred's wagon year 7 model

Year 8 woodwork students have just completed their model F1 car. To make the FI car, students have a turn using a jigsaw to cut out the chassis shape. The next project is a wooden jewellery box, which will be the main model for year 8. This project involves students fitting hinges and a hasp and staple set. The jewellery box is a popular project with students as it also can be adapted for many other purposes. Often, our students like a space to store their special things!

Year 8 F1 cars

Yar 9 woodwork students have nearly completed their Apache helicopter models. This project has lots of components that take time to make, so it has taken most of the term to build. The aircraft body has the nose cone turned in a wood lathe, and then the tail shape is achieved by cutting along the grain by hand, which is not easy. Students are required to custom shape parts by hand and work with acrylic to simulate the cockpit glass.

Apache helicopter

Year 10 woodwork students have completed a solid term’s work, making items for Market Day and consumable items as a service to Kanyana Wildlife Sanctuary. Students are now working on a round coffee table, which is proving to be a bit tricky and time consuming to assemble. The project has required lots of teamwork as winter has set in and there are always a few students absent. We have been operating with a production line approach to keep everybody up to the same step towards completion.

Year 10 with their round tables

Tradestart - work around the school: The students have completed three jobs around the school, which has given them experience using a range of fixings and tools like spirit levels. Students have put up a notice board in CANDO Woolies and fixed hanging rails on storeroom doors. It has been great to watch students working as a team and solving problems with little prompting from staff. The group has also completed the final assembly of bird perches that will be donated to Kanyana Wildlife Sanctuary later this year. These jobs are packed with skills like using power tools and the importance of cleaning up at the end of a job.

Rail fixing

Making bird perches

Tradestart folding shovel progress:  The students complete a theory session in the classroom each week to learn about the processes and tools they use in the afternoon workshop session. It is great to see this group of students confidently get set up and put their PPE on, ready to start work in the workshop. Students have pressed their folding shovel blades into shape. There was much discussion about the best blade shape for holding soil during digging! The next step was to bronze weld their handles together, then arc welding the angle iron brackets to the blades, enabling final assembly. Students have also used flap discs mounted on angle grinders to remove surface rust.

Physical Education

Term 2 has passed in a blur of activity! All classes have been busy developing their soccer skills and have enjoyed playing modified games against their classmates.

The year 10 students found practising golf a challenge in their recreational pursuits program. There were lots of friendly rivalries, and everyone made progress, developing their putting in the Block 10 rec area and hitting plastic golf balls with various clubs at Coker Park. Hopefully, we will be visiting a driving range soon, and some of them will continue to enjoy golf beyond their school years.

The highlight of the term was the interschool Kalability Soccer Carnival in week six. All our students behaved well both on and off the field. The Division 2 team won most of their games, blitzing their opposition and scoring many goals. Our Division 1 team played with amazing skill and teamwork, easily winning all their games and playing attractive football. There was no controversy this year, with them rightfully winning the championship and celebrating their win with enthusiasm. The best players were Lochlan Fennell, Patrick Kargbo and Ali Saad Hamad in the Division 1 team and Elina Skrgic, Beau Collings and Abu Azrin for the Division 2 team. A huge effort by the students, and a big thanks to all the staff who made the day possible!

Student Services Update

During the term, the student services team coordinated several events, including National Reconciliation Week and Wellness Week.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements and explore how we can contribute to reconciliation in Australia. During the week, staff and students enjoyed numerous activities, including face painting, making damper and yarning, tasting kangaroo, making and designing our own digeridoo, and learning about National Reconciliation Week. To help acknowledge this event, everyone was encouraged to come to school on Friday, 31 May, dressed in orange, purple, and black to show their support.

Once again, the student services team was grateful to see Wellness Week supported by the staff and students. Most seemed to be able to find an activity to improve their mood and wellness. For some, it was exercising, doing push-ups, or competing; for others, it was activities like pampering, nail painting, gaming, colouring in bubbles, and practising mindfulness.

We have NAIDOC week fast approaching, and we look forward to celebrating it this week.

National Reconciliation Week 2024

What a jammed-packed, deadly NRW (minus Monday, 3 June, due to the Public Holiday) it was at CCESC. The students really got into the spirit of reconciliation by participating in the wonderful program of events to enhance their appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.

Students had many hands-on learning opportunities and sensory experiences, such as making bush tucker damper, tasting kangaroo meat, having their faces painted, and listening to cool didgeridoo tunes. The smiles on the students’ faces were priceless.

In the classroom, students also had opportunities to learn Noongar words, see maps of Australia's many Indigenous nations, and look at some important historical dates, including the 1967 Referendum. There was lots of Wanjoo singing from the year 7 classes, too.

Thanks to the student services team and Mr Gardner (AIEO) for preparing the awesome daily activities. We encourage our staff, students and the community to keep the conversation going – NAIDOC Week is just around the corner - 7th – 14th July!

Middle School Parking

Please note that parking is not permitted in the driveway at the school's entrance, as indicated by the 'no stopping' markers and yellow line, as this causes a traffic jam on Wharf Street and is dangerous for students. The disabled parking bays are for people displaying an ACROD sticker only. Your cooperation would be appreciated. Parents are welcome to park beside the school near the bus bays. Parents picking up children from the bus bays need to arrive early before the buses.
